For summer residents who do not have the opportunity to regularly care for tomatoes in the garden, it is recommended to choose species that are unpretentious in care, drought-resistant, easily adapting to lower temperatures. Such tomatoes include the Siberian bunchy variety, ideal for growing in open ground and in film greenhouses.
Breeding history
The late-ripening tomato was bred in 2017. The authors of the nightshade culture were Russian breeders from Novosibirsk O. V. Postnikova and A. V. Zelenin. Introduced into the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation and allowed the tomato to be used in 2019. The vegetable culture has been zoned in all regions of the country, including zones with cold summers and problem farming.
Description of the variety
The Siberian bunch tomato is a medium-sized plant that grows up to 90 cm in height in greenhouse conditions. In the garden, the bush stretches up to 50-60 cm in height. The determinant bush is characterized by a strong erect stem and branches, moderate thickening of dark green leaves, a strong rod-type root system that feeds the plant with useful components, and intermediate inflorescences.
Fruit clusters are formed through each leaf, where up to 5-6 berries are tied. On a healthy tomato bush, 4-5 fruit clusters can form.
When growing a tomato, there is a need to form a bush of 2-3 stems, remove stepchildren and a garter to the supports, especially in greenhouses. Tomatoes have a universal purpose, so they are eaten fresh, dried, canned, pickled and processed. Tomatoes are especially good for whole-fruit canning.
The main qualities of the fruit
The Siberian bunchy tomato is a medium-sized vegetable, gaining weight from 89 to 150 grams. The shape of the vegetable is cylindrical (pepper-shaped) with a slight ribbing of the surface. The skin of the fruit is current, but very strong, ensuring the transportability of the fruit and long-term keeping quality. The tomato is not prone to cracking.
At the stage of full maturity, the vegetable has a uniform and rich red color. An unripe tomato is light green with darkening at the stalk. The shine and smoothness of the skin, as well as the uniform shape and size of the fruits, provide them with commercial appeal.
Taste characteristics
Siberian bunchy tomato is a tasty and aromatic tomato. The flesh of the berries is fleshy, medium-dense, moderately juicy, with a small number of seeds. In the context, the pulp is quite sugary and tender. The taste is dominated by sweetness with a slight sourness, complemented by a spicy aroma characteristic of this culture.
Ripening and fruiting
The Siberian bunchy tomato is a late-ripening one. The first fruits ripen after 120-130 days after the mass germination of seeds. The fruiting period of the culture is extended, so you can eat fresh tomatoes before the autumn cold. The phase of active fruiting occurs in July-August. The last berries can be removed at the stage of technical maturity, as they ripen well at room temperature.
Yield
The variety is declared as a high-yielding variety. Under favorable weather conditions and the implementation of all agricultural techniques, up to 5 kg of tomatoes can be harvested from one bush per season. On average, up to 8.5 kg of berries ripen per 1 m2. In the greenhouse, the yield is 20% higher.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
Sowing seeds for seedlings is carried out in late March - early April (55-60 days before the transfer of the bushes). The seed is pre-sorted out, disinfected, treated with a growth stimulator. In a warm and sufficiently lit room, mass germination occurs on the 5-7th day. Plants are planted in separate containers at the stage when 2-3 leaves appear. 2 weeks before transplanting, the bushes are hardened, exposed to fresh air daily for 15-30 minutes.
It is recommended to transplant bushes to a garden or greenhouse in May-June. This should be done on a cloudy day. The air and soil must be well warmed up.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener will be able to harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
It is important to observe the density and location of tomato bushes on the site. It is recommended to have no more than 3 plants per 1 m2. The correct scheme for landing is considered to be a 50x50 cm scheme.
Growing and care
The culture is grown by two methods - sowing seeds in the ground and through seedlings. The most convenient and productive is the seedling method. Tomatoes grow on loose and fertile soil. The variety is unpretentious to soils, but needs full complex care.
So, tomatoes need to be watered, fed, formed bushes and tied to supports, removed extra stepsons, and also protected from insects and viruses. In addition, do not forget about loosening and weeding the soil.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Disease and pest resistance
Tomatoes are highly resistant to many tomato diseases - tobacco mosaic virus, brown spot, rust. Often the plant is exposed to phytophthora, so you should not forget about preventive measures using fungicidal preparations. Spraying with insecticides will protect from the invasion of aphids and whiteflies.
Resistant to adverse weather conditions
Vegetable culture is quite stress-resistant. It tolerates temperature fluctuations, short-term droughts and even light frosts. The only factor undesirable for tomatoes is drafts and gusty winds.
Growing regions
Due to their high resistance to adverse conditions, tomatoes can grow in all regions of the country. The culture is massively grown in the Volga region, Siberia, the Urals, the Moscow region and the Far East.
