Tomato Sugar by its very name promises sweetness and pleasant taste. But it is not so easy to achieve this in practice. That is why it is necessary to carefully study the characteristics of the culture and the nuances of its cultivation.
Breeding history
The creation of the Sugar tomato is associated with the activities of the rather well-known agricultural company Poisk. The breeders Khovrin, Tereshonkova, Klimenko and Kostenko headed the program for obtaining it. It is worth emphasizing that this is precisely a variety, and not a hybrid culture. The tomato was officially registered in 2015.
Description of the variety
Sugar shows a characteristic picture of indeterminate development in the beds. It is recommended to plant it in greenhouses under plastic wrap. The bushes of such a tomato reach a height of 1.7-2 m. The green leaves are medium in size.
The main qualities of the fruit
The berries that have just formed from the ovaries will be green. No spots were found at the base. The red color indicates the full ripeness of the crop. Other nuances:
development from a simple inflorescence;
articulated stalks;
weight on average 130 g;
maximum weight 450 g;
rounded shape with slightly pronounced ribbing.
Taste characteristics
The harvested crop can be perfectly eaten fresh. It is also used to make tomato paste and ketchup. Pulp Sugar moderately firm. The expressive sweetness of its fruit is noted.
Ripening and fruiting
Sugar is an attractive mid-season tomato. Its berries will ripen on average 110-115 days after the formation of green shoots. Fruit picking is possible in the middle of summer. It is necessary to take into account the dependence of the timing of obtaining tomatoes on meteorological conditions and on the quality of garden work.
Yield
The official description indicates that the level of productivity is 6.1 kg per 1 sq. m. However, it can vary within a fairly wide range. This is due to both weather factors and the efforts of farmers.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
It is recommended to place seeds in containers 60-65 days before the planned transfer into open ground. You can use ready-made substrates or self-prepared soil mixture. A transplant to a permanent place must be done when the first peduncle appears.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener can harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
The most practical method of landing is 400x600 mm. Other options are not in accordance with the guidelines of the planting material suppliers. They have not yet been tested by the summer residents themselves. It is necessary to place 3 bushes per 1 m2. If the plants are formed into 1 stem, it is permissible to plant 4 plants.
Growing and care
It is absolutely impossible to do without tying the bushes to the supports. Otherwise, high Sugar will lean under the weight of the crop and its own load. Tomato tolerates tobacco mosaic contamination. Shaping will also be a mandatory measure of protection. The plant is led mainly in 1 or 2 stems.
Seedlings are picked in the phase of 2 true leaves. Varietal seeds have to be treated. Also, seed dressing is recommended. To grow Sugar, you will need to regularly water and feed the plants with a complex mineral composition. Prevention of diseases and attacks of insect pests is also very important.
The drugs must be used strictly according to the instructions. There are no special subtleties for this particular variety. It is necessary to spread mulch on the surface of the soil. Nonwoven fabric or hay are good options. You can also use foliage and sawdust.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
