Summer residents and farmers prefer tomatoes with a high growth rate, good yield and ease of maintenance. These nightshades include the mid-season tomato variety Peter the Great.
Breeding history
The hybrid tomato Peter the Great is the result of the work of a group of Russian scientists (Dubinin, Lukyanenko and Dubinin) representing the Sedek agricultural firm. The tomato was bred in 2013. The variety was added to the ranks of the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation in 2015.
A vegetable crop is recommended for growing in all climatic zones of the country. The variety gives the best yields when grown in greenhouses and film structures.
Description of the variety
The Peter the Great tomato is an indeterminate tall plant, the height of which reaches 150-170 cm. It is characterized by a sprawling bush of medium thickening with dark green foliage, a powerful central stem, moderate branching, a developed root system and a simple type of inflorescence. Up to 5-6 ovaries are formed in each fruit cluster.
Taking care of the culture, do not forget about the formation of 2-3 stems, the obligatory garter to supports or trellises, as well as the timely removal of stepsons. The vegetable has a universal purpose, so it is eaten fresh, canned, salted, processed into dressings, ketchup and pasta. In addition, tomatoes are suitable for whole fruit canning.
The main qualities of the fruit
The tomato belongs to the class of large-fruited vegetables. On average, it reaches a mass of 90 to 110 grams. The length of each tomato is 12-14 cm. The berry is endowed with a cylindrical shape (oblong-oval) with a slightly pronounced ribbing of the surface and a sharp "nose". In a state of absolute ripeness, the tomato is evenly colored red. Unripe tomatoes are light green in color. The vegetable skin is dense, perfectly smooth and glossy. It is the peel that protects the tomato from cracking and other damage. Peter the Great tomatoes tolerate transportation well and are characterized by long shelf life. In addition, the vegetable has a good presentation.
Taste characteristics
The Peter the Great tomato is distinguished by its excellent taste. The flesh of the berries is fleshy, of moderate density, quite juicy and with a small amount of seeds. The aroma of the tomato is classic, which is inherent in many tomatoes. The taste of the vegetable contains both sweetness and sourness. The variety is famous for its excellent vitamin composition of the pulp, as well as the safety of nutrients even after processing or canning.
Ripening and fruiting
The variety is mid-season. From the moment of full germination to the ripening of the first tomatoes on the branches, it takes a little more than 3 months (105-110 days). Tomatoes are ripened gradually. The period of mass ripening of tomatoes falls on the end of July-August.
Yield
Observing the basic rules and recommendations of agricultural technology, up to 9 kg of ripe berries can be removed from 1 m2 per season. In a greenhouse, the harvest is even slightly higher than in the garden.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
The hybrid species is grown exclusively by the seedling method. Sowing seeds for seedlings is carried out in March (60-65 days before transplanting). The seed is carefully sorted and disinfected. After sowing, you can equip a greenhouse using polyethylene or glass, which will accelerate germination. Massive sprouts appear on the 6-8th day.
At the stage of the appearance of the second pair of true leaves, a dive should be carried out (planting the plants in separate cups). 7-10 days before transplanting, it is recommended to prepare the plants - to harden them by exposing them to fresh air, which will facilitate the process of adapting the bushes to the new environment.
The bushes should be transferred to a permanent place of growth in the second half of May, when the air is sufficiently warmed up. If tomatoes are planted in a greenhouse, then you can transfer them a little earlier.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener can harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
When growing a nightshade crop, it is recommended not only to properly care for, but also to observe the density and planting pattern. No more than 3 bushes should be placed per 1 m2 when forming into 2 stems. If you form a bush into 1 stem, then 4 seedling bushes can be planted. The optimal scheme for planting is considered to be a 40x70 cm scheme.
Growing and caring
For Peter the Great tomatoes, loose and fertile soil is suitable, which is good for air permeability and has neutral acidity.
Comprehensive crop care includes regular watering, top dressing, loosening the soil, airing, shaping and tying bushes, removing new stepchildren, and protecting against insects and viruses.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Disease and pest resistance
Strong immunity protects tomatoes from many diseases - verticillosis and tobacco mosaic virus.
Resistant to adverse weather conditions
The stress tolerance of the hybrid is moderate. It tolerates short-term drought and heat, but does not tolerate drafts and strong humidity.
