Tomatoes with excellent appearance and taste are popular with gardeners. Tomato Peter the First has good and versatile characteristics. The crop can be grown in many regions of Russia.

Breeding history

The originator of the selection is LLC Agrofirm "Sedek". The authors-breeders were A.N. Lukyanenko, S.V. Dubinin, I.N. vegetable gardens. Occurs under the name Peter the First F1. The variety is indeterminate and is intended for cultivation in open and closed ground.

Description of the variety

Tomato bushes Peter the First have unlimited growth power. On average, the bushes grow up to 200 cm in greenhouses, in open ground the figures are slightly lower. In order to avoid breaking the stem under its own weight or the weight of the fruit, the stems are usually tied to a support (pegs or trellises). The stem is powerful with little hairiness. The crown of the variety is semi-spreading, formation is necessary. The root system does not go deep into the ground, but to the side.

The leaves are large, dark green. There are few of them on the bush. In too hot weather, the fruits are closed from direct sunlight. From moisture ingress, the surface of the leaves can be covered with small yellow blotches, which means burns. Over time, the leaf may turn completely yellow and curl up into a tube. Therefore, they must be removed in a timely manner.

The inflorescence of the variety is simple, the first is laid at the level of 7-8 leaves and bears 5-8 flowers. After pollination, 6-8 ovaries are formed. The number of fruits per cluster is 5-6.

Gardeners recommend leaving one main stem and 1-2 side ones when forming bushes. In this case, the bush is not overloaded, and the harvest will be good.

The tomato has good characteristics and appearance. Gardeners note that the culture is unpretentious in care and has a good immunity to diseases. Thanks to their dense peel, tomatoes are stored for a long time and can be well transported over long distances.

Among the disadvantages, the need for the formation of a bush and tying is noted. As well as the fight against insect pests.

The main qualities of the fruit

The shape of the fruit is elliptical, that is, oblong and elongated. Fruit weight 100-130 g. The first tomatoes can grow heavier, but this happens only once a season. The color of mature vegetables is red or raspberry-red; unripe fruits have a light green peel.

The skin is smooth, glossy and firm. Does not crack either during growth on a bush, or during transportation or processing.

The flesh is firm, fleshy and slightly watery. Usually 2-3 chambers with a small amount of seeds are formed inside. Since the variety is a hybrid, the seeds are not palpable when consumed.

The fruits are versatile, so they are well suited for canning or pickling, for making salads, sauces, juices and ketchups. Also suitable for vegetable smoothies.

Taste characteristics

Many gardeners note a sweet aftertaste and a slight, subtle sourness. The sugar concentration per 100 g is 2.4%.

Ripening and fruiting

The variety belongs to a group of plants with medium ripening times. From the ovaries to the moment of ripening, 105-110 days pass. The amount of time will depend on the region and place of cultivation. Fruiting is long - the first vegetables can be removed at the beginning of July, the rest will gradually ripen.

Gardeners note that at the end of the season or with a strong load on the bush, tomatoes can be removed a little unripe. The fruits will ripen on their own if they are removed in wooden boxes and in a warm, dark place. At the same time, vegetables will not lose their taste.

Yield

Tomato Peter the First has good yield indicators. 8.5 kg of berries are removed from 1 m2.

The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground

The Peter the First variety belongs to the first generation hybrids, that is, it will not be possible to collect and grow seeds from the previous harvest. Therefore, the material must be purchased from a specialized store. Such seeds do not need additional processing, but they can be soaked in growth stimulation solution before sowing.

In early March, seedling boxes are prepared. They should be filled with slightly acidic soil mixed with fertilizers. Further, depressions are made: holes or a trench with a depth of 2-3 cm.In the trenches, it is worth observing the distance between the seeds - 3 cm.

Then everything is poured abundantly with water. This is done with a spray gun, in order to avoid additional unnecessary recesses. The boxes are covered with foil and placed on the windowsill. The temperature under the film should not be lower than +22 degrees. When the seeds hatch, the film is removed.

A pick is made when several leaves appear on the seedlings. For fertilization, wood ash can be poured into new containers. Thanks to her, you can avoid the black leg, which appears due to severe waterlogging.

The seedlings are transferred to a permanent place when they are from 55 to 65 days old. Before planting, the earth is dug up and abundantly moistened. You can use growth stimulants, pour them directly into the hole.

Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener will be able to harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.

Landing scheme

Although the crown is not spreading, it is recommended to keep the distance between the bushes 50x50 cm.It turns out that there should be 3 plants per 1 m2. With a strong thickening, the seedlings will feel a deficiency in moisture, minerals, and sunlight. All these points can affect the yield. In this case, the density will interfere with processing, pinching and tying bushes.

Planting a tomato is a very important and painstaking business. In order to get a good harvest of tomatoes, you need to competently approach the issue of planting. When planting a tomato in the ground, it is necessary to take into account many factors - correctly determine the timing, prepare the soil, correctly calculate the distance between plants, take into account the rules of crop rotation.

Growing and care

Further care of the culture is as follows.

  • Watering mode. The first irrigation is done 14 days after transplanting. Then - 1-2 times a week. In case of drought, the procedure is repeated as needed.

  • Top dressing. For fertilization use: bird droppings, herbal infusion, peat, manure. Potassium, phosphorus and boric acid are added to the diet.

  • Bush formation. Grassing and removing excess foliage is done every 1-2 weeks. Stepsons should grow no more than 4 cm, and then they are removed.

Watering tomatoes is not difficult. After planting, the plant is watered at such intervals that the soil remains moist. In dry weather, when there is no rain for a long time, watering can be carried out every day, but usually the beds with tomatoes are irrigated 2-3 times a week.
The methods of tying tomato bushes can vary significantly, depending on the availability of available material, the method of fixation, and also the variety. In general, it is recommended to adhere to the following scheme: first, the central stems are grabbed, and then, as the fruits ripen, the lateral branches.
One of the important conditions for tomato agricultural technology is the correct formation of the bush. The formation of tomato bushes means performing the following steps: pinching, pinching, trimming the leaves, normalizing the ovaries.

A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.

It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.

Treatment and prevention of diseases and pests
When growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, diseases often occur due to a violation of the temperature regime and excessive humidity. The most common diseases are fungal (late blight, cladosporium, rot).
The fight against diseases and pests of tomatoes in open areas can be quite difficult. This is because nightshades are exposed to a wide variety of pathogens and insect pests.
