The Palmyra tomato belongs to varieties, the fruits of which have some interesting feature, for example, it can be the shape or color of the fruit. When the Palmyra tomatoes ripen, the bushes are simply strewn with brushes with bright orange berries of the original elongated shape, which are also delicious.
Breeding history
Palmyra is the result of the fruitful work of a group of fairly well-known breeders, employees of the Scientific Research Institute for the Breeding of Vegetable Crops. These are such names as V.F. Gavrish, E.V.Amcheslavskaya, D.S. Gladkov, R.N.Kapustina, A.A. Volkov, A.N. Nesterovich, G.M. Artemyeva, Yu. A., Semenova A. N. The variety was entered in the state register in 2008, the crop is recommended for growing both under film and in greenhouses. Palmyra is ideal for commercial cultivation and subsequent sale in stores, as it has excellent shelf life and transportability.
Description of the variety
The plant has an indeterminate, that is, unlimited type of growth. Reaches a height of two meters, but can grow even higher. Leaves are medium in size, there are few of them on the bush, the color is dark green. The variety has simple inflorescences. Up to 13 ovaries are formed on each hand.
The main qualities of the fruit
Palmyra fruits have an unusual elliptical and slightly elongated pepper-like shape. The ribbing is weak. The unripe fruit is light green, and when ripe, the tomatoes turn into a bright orange beautiful color. There are few seed nests in the fruit - from two to three, there are also few seeds. The weight of one berry is 90 g, the pulp is quite dense, not too juicy.
Taste characteristics
Tomatoes taste great, and they also contain a lot of sugars and carotene. Therefore, tomatoes are often used in the diet.
Ripening and fruiting
Palmyra is a mid-season tomato in terms of ripening, which occurs 101 days after seedling germination. Harvest in July.
Yield
The declared marketable yield is 9.2 kg per square meter of the vegetable garden (or greenhouse).
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
For seedlings, seed material of Palmyra is sown around March 15, that is, 60-65 days before planting in a permanent place.
And the planting of grown seedlings in the ground takes place already in mid-May, if under a film, or at the beginning of June, if it is supposed to be cultivated on open ground.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener can harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
The originators advise planting Palmyra with a frequency of 4 bushes per square meter. Planting scheme - 40x60 cm.
Growing and caring
Palmyra's agricultural technology is not much different from the cultivation of other tall varieties of tomatoes. Immediately after planting the seedlings, supports are installed in the ground, to which the stem is subsequently tied as it grows.
Palmyra throws out a lot of side shoots, so it is necessary to do pinching almost constantly, since the bush needs to be formed.
In the southern regions, the crop is grown in 1-2 trunks; in the northern regions, experts recommend practicing the formation of 3 stems in order to increase the yield. As a rule, those lateral shoots that are above and below the peduncles are removed. During the growing season, pinching should be carried out regularly.
Watering Palmyra is carried out at the root, always with warm water and every few days. At the same time, moisture should not be allowed to get on the leaves. To enrich the earth with oxygen, loosening and hilling are carried out. These activities will also contribute to the active development of the root system.
Feeding with mineral complexes and organics is carried out twice a season. The first is done at the flowering stage, the second - at the time of fruit ripening.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Disease and pest resistance
Palmyra is distinguished by strong immunity and good resistance to most diseases that affect tomatoes. The main thing is to follow the rules of agricultural technology, as well as crop rotation, so as not to provoke infections. However, it is important to avoid being close to crops such as nightshade.
In the fight against the main pests of tomatoes, both folk remedies and special preparations help. A favorable environment for the emergence of fungi and viruses in greenhouses is destroyed in a simple way - by regularly ventilating the room.
Growing regions
The Palmira variety is recommended for growing in such regions as:
- Central;
- North and Northwest;
- Volgo-Vyatsky;
- Middle Volga;
- North Caucasus;
- CChO.
