Orange tomatoes have always attracted many gardeners. And the point here is not only in the spectacular appearance, but also in a completely different taste. A remarkable indeterminate variety is the Orange Giant. This high-yielding subspecies will easily take root in any region of the Russian Federation.
Breeding history
Such specialists as Vasilevsky, Korochkin, Korotkov and Kochkin were engaged in the selection of the Orange Giant. The work was carried out at the ZAO Scientific and Production Corporation “NK. LTD ". The resulting hardy variety was allowed for use in 2001.
Description of the variety
The orange giant is a standard medium-sized representative of the nightshade. Massive bushes are powerful and developed, but differ in some compactness. Plants grow up to 150 centimeters in height. The sturdy stems are covered with a moderate amount of leaves of the usual green hue. The foliage is not large in size.
Gardeners noted the following advantages of the variety:
unusual color;
getting large fruits;
excellent berry taste;
good productivity;
possibility of transportation.
The cons will be as follows:
painstaking care;
fruits cannot be preserved whole.
The main qualities of the fruit
Like many other tomatoes, the Orange Giant, when unripe, is hung with green fruits. As they ripen, the tomatoes become large, acquire an orange tint. By weight, they will be about 350 grams, but in warm climates they can weigh more. Each cluster ripens 2-3 flat-rounded or rounded tomatoes with strong ribbing.
As for the inflorescences, this variety has a simple type. The first is marked above 7 or 9 sheets, and then the formation takes place every 3 plates.
Taste characteristics
The fleshy and juicy flesh of the Orange Giant contains few seeds. Due to its sweet and unusual taste, the tomato often becomes a "guest" of many feasts. It is cut into salads and simply as a fresh vegetable. Such tomatoes can also be salted, using in the winter months.
Ripening and fruiting
Mid-season Orange giant matures in 110-120 days. Fruiting is notable for its elongation, so the berries can be picked from July 25 to September 10.
Yield
The plant bears fruit very well. 4 to 5 kg of orange tomatoes are removed from the bush, and a square meter, even with poor agricultural technology, will yield at least 6.3 kg of fruit.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
Sowing material begins to be sown on March 20-30. Before planting, the grains are disinfected and soaked in "Epin". So it will be possible to achieve faster germination. The primer is recommended to be used commercially available. Seedling care is not difficult, you just need to water it in a timely manner, and also maintain an optimal temperature regime. In addition, it is recommended to feed the seedlings of this variety at least twice. From June 1 to June 10, they can be planted in the ground. If this is an open space, make sure that the soil is warmed up, just like the air. Tomatoes should not be subjected to a night cold snap.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener will be able to harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
It is customary to plant the orange giant in separate holes. The depth of each should be about 40 cm. Compost, superphosphate and wood ash must be added to the planting pits.
Tomatoes need a maximum of nutrients and they need a lot of space. Therefore, no more than 4 bushes will have to be planted per square meter of the garden. The originator recommends a scheme of 80x70 centimeters.
Growing and care
In order for tomatoes to give the maximum amount of harvest, no more than 2 stems should be left. Most often, the culture is formed in one stem, especially in greenhouses. In addition, plants will need pinching, as well as a garter, due to the severity of the fruit. Watering is carried out once a week, even more often in hot weather.
It is imperative to control the cleanliness of the site. To do this, weeds should be removed regularly. To help them germinate more slowly, it is recommended to use mulch. Loosening is done a couple of hours after watering, when the earth dries up a little and takes on a light crust.
Disease and pest resistance
The orange giant is almost immune to disease. They can occur only if the gardener himself makes a number of mistakes, namely:
planting tomatoes incorrectly, thickening the beds;
prevents air from entering greenhouses;
plants tomatoes in shaded areas;
gives too little or too much feeding;
water more often than required;
does not monitor the amount of foliage and stepsons.
Therefore, diseases are easy to avoid if you adhere to the elementary rules of agricultural technology. If the fungi do appear, fungicides will have to get rid of them.
Of the pests, the variety attacks the sawfly, the Colorado potato beetle, aphids, thrips. First of all, they try to get rid of parasites using folk methods. The lack of results will require the use of acaricides and insecticides. However, it is worth remembering that chemical compositions are prohibited a couple of weeks before harvesting the fruits.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
