The Orange Cap variety is a variety of mini tomatoes that can be grown even at home on a windowsill. Differs in compact size, high yield, brings beautiful and tasty yellow cherry tomatoes. They are used in salads, for canning as a whole, for decorating dishes.
Breeding history
Created at the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution the Federal Scientific Center for Vegetable Growing with the participation of Agrofirma Poisk LLC. The authors are: S. V. Maksimov, N. N. Klimenko, V. V. Sergeev. Included in the State Register in 2011.
Description of the variety
The bushes are undersized, reach a height of 30-35 cm. The stem is strong, powerful. Leaves are medium-sized, tomato-like, wrinkled, tend to curl, dark green. The root system is poorly developed. The inflorescence is simple, the first is formed over 5-6 leaves, then after one. About 6-7 brushes are formed, each tied from 6 to 8 tomatoes. Superdeterminate growth type, standard variety. Suitable for open ground, for film greenhouses, it is possible to grow in a container on a windowsill or balcony. Often planted to compact the planting next to tall tomatoes.
The main qualities of the fruit
It has the size of a classic cherry, weighing 15-12 g, round, yellow-orange, soft flesh, thin smooth skin, few seeds. They are rich in antioxidants, lycopene, vitamin C. They are stored for a short time, crumple during transportation and lose their presentation.
Taste characteristics
Very sweet, with a slight sourness, aromatic. Does not cause allergic reactions.
Ripening and fruiting
Very early ripe in terms of ripening, from the moment the sprouts appear until the tomatoes are removed, 85-90 days pass. The first crop is harvested in the 10th of July and until the 20th of August, sometimes before the beginning of September. The tomatoes are firmly attached to the branch. With sudden changes in temperature, the fruits may crack.
Yield
A high-yielding crop, from a miniature bush, you can remove from 500 g of tomatoes. From 1 sq. m about 3 kg.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
Seeds for seedlings are sown in late February - early March. Before disembarking, they are disinfected and washed. Placed in the ground to a depth of 3 cm with an interval of 2 cm, watered and covered with plastic wrap until sprouts appear. The soil temperature is maintained for germination at +25 degrees. Seedlings are watered 1 time in 3 days with warm water. Dive when forming 1-2 true leaves in a container of at least 300 ml. They are planted in the garden at the end of April at the age of 60-65 days. Prefers a slightly acidic air-permeable substrate, loamy or sandy loam. After transplanting, it is recommended to cover the first 10-12 days, until the seedlings get stronger, the air humidity should be within 60-65%. When landing in a container on a balcony, the optimal volume should be at least 4 liters, in winter it needs additional lighting.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener will be able to harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
Placed at intervals of 50x30 cm, 1 sq. m fits 4-5 plants.
Growing and care
Does not require pinning, does not need tying and shaping. If the bushes grow strongly, they are recommended to thin out slightly. Needs regular and abundant watering 2 times a week, warmth and bright sun. Watered early in the morning strictly at the root. The culture loves humid air, in the garden the humidity should be in the range of 50-60%. When the specified humidity rate is exceeded, flowers begin to fall off, fruit setting decreases, the stems stretch, shoots can get sick with different types of fungi. It is necessary to loosen the soil very carefully, remove weeds. They are fed 3 times per season. For the first time, during the period of active growth, nitrogen compounds are introduced, during flowering a mixture of potassium-nitrogen fertilizers, when ovaries appear, complex fertilizing, which contains nitrogen, potassium phosphorus. From organic fertilizers, the Orange Cap responds well to chicken droppings, mullein, urea.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Disease and pest resistance
Has good immunity to verticillus, tobacco mosaic virus, fusarium wilt, root rot. An early ripe variety ends fruiting before late blight occurs. For the prevention of diseases in the greenhouse, standard processing is carried out for tomatoes.
Among the main pests, the most common are: Colorado potato beetle, thrips, aphids, spider mites, slugs. Spray with biological products, or use folk remedies for insect control.
Growing regions
In unprotected soil, they are grown in regions with a warm climate. For planting in a greenhouse and on a windowsill, it is suitable for all regions of Russia.
