Such a "winter" name should not dampen the interest of farmers. After all, this is a really attractive culture that deserves attention. However, like any other popular varieties, such a tomato must be studied very carefully.
Breeding history
The blizzard was created at the research center at the Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Leading breeders are Gubko, Zalivakina and Kamanin. Official admission for growing in private gardens was given in 2005.
Description of the variety
It is worth emphasizing that this is a variety, not a hybrid. Blizzard bushes are undersized and can rise to a maximum of 0.45-0.57 m. Moreover, they are also quite compact. Foliage of medium length is formed on the branches. She is green in color.
The main qualities of the fruit
The transportability of the crop is declared at a high level. The share of marketable berries under favorable conditions and proper care is up to 97%. The crop is initially green in color, but will gradually turn red. Other features are as follows:
- the usual mass spread is from 0.06 to 0.107 kg;
- the heaviest weighed fruits - 0.21 kg;
- strong, glossy peel;
- simple circle shape;
- weak ribs;
- formation from simple inflorescences (first over 7-8 leaves, and then after 1-2 leaves);
- articulated stalk;
- decent keeping quality.
Taste characteristics
Mostly the harvest is consumed fresh. The pulp of the fruit is dense and juicy at the same time. The share of dry matter ranges from 4.2 to 4.6%. The sugar concentration can vary from 1.9 to 2.6%. In addition to a rather expressive sweetness, a slight sourness is also noted.
Ripening and fruiting
According to the generally accepted classification, Blizzard is classified as mid-season tomatoes. Between the appearance of green shoots on the surface and the readiness to harvest, it will take from 98 to 106 days. It must be understood that this is only an average. In reality, it will certainly be influenced by the weather and how the plants are taken care of. It will be possible to remove the fruits in July and August, but this can only be determined more precisely in practice.
Yield
The variety belongs to the high-yielding category. It is possible to collect 8-9 kg of tomatoes from 1 sq. m. The actual weather plays an important role in this. But watering, removing weeds, feeding and other parameters of agricultural technology should also not be discounted. Some sources write about harvesting fruits up to 17-20 kg per 1 m2, as well as about the fact that cultivation is most productive in Western Siberia.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
It is recommended to put soil in containers and put seeds there in March or April. Seedlings are ready for transfer to open ground during May or June. It is imperative to take into account the characteristics of a particular region, as well as pay attention to the degree of development of certain plants.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener will be able to harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
The gap between individual tomatoes of this variety should be about 40 cm. The recommended row spacing is 60 cm. Planting more than 6 plants per square meter is not allowed. m.
Growing and care
An attractive feature of the Blizzard is that it does not need to be shaped. The only exceptions are openly neglected bushes. High resistance to cold allows you to grow a similar tomato even in climatically problematic areas. Removing stepchildren is necessary only occasionally. You can increase the efficiency of cultivation by feeding the seedlings with calcium nitrate 5-6 days before transshipment into open ground.
Top dressing is required every 10 days. Nitrogen compounds are used before fruiting. Later, preference should be given to mixtures of phosphorus and potassium. The seedlings themselves are recommended to be planted in dense nutritious soil. It includes:
- 3 lobes of garden turf;
- 1 share of washed river sand;
- 0.5 share of humus.
After the seeds are evenly distributed on the surface, it is necessary to sprinkle with peat (1 cm layer). Seedlings should be kept under a film at a temperature of 25 degrees. When the seedlings appear, the film is removed, and the seedlings are hardened for 7 days at a temperature of 14-16 degrees. Most of the time, the seedlings should be kept at 20-22 degrees. The pick is carried out when the 2nd true leaf is formed.
After transshipment into open ground, if serious nighttime temperature drops are likely, the bushes should be kept under a film for the first decade. The need to tie up the bushes arises if they are covered with a large number of fruits. Irrigation is carried out 1-3 times a week. The landmarks are the condition of the earth and the plant itself.
For top dressing, mineral and organic fertilizers are used. Top dressing is applied at least 3 times per season, while organic matter and minerals alternate.
It is worth considering that in the most difficult regions it is still advisable to grow the Blizzard not in the open field, but in greenhouses. For a normal garden planting, it is recommended to choose the sunniest places. Due to the long fruiting period, it is advisable to remove the fruit after partial ripening. They will pick up ripeness separately from the plant and will be completely protected from late blight. The application of fertilizing should be stopped 14 days before harvesting.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Growing regions
Such a culture can be confidently planted in:
- Western Siberia;
- Kurgan, Sverdlovsk and other regions of the Urals;
- Primorsky, Khabarovsk Territories and other regions of the Far East.
Review overview
A blizzard is liked by the vast majority of farmers who try to grow it. The seedlings are even outwardly beautiful. The culture is unpretentious when grown and practically does not get sick. At the same time, it is noted that the first fruits are tied better than the subsequent harvest. Growing in a greenhouse is far less promising than growing in an open garden.
