In the cold regions of Russia, it is very difficult to grow vegetables, especially thermophilic tomatoes. However, domestic breeders have created a unique honey-sugar tomato variety that can grow in the cold and short northern summer.
Description of the variety
Tomato Honey-Sugar is a determinant variety that can be propagated independently by collecting seeds. It was created by Siberian breeders for growing in cold climates. The bushes of the culture are high - 80-150 cm, requiring a mandatory tie to the support and the removal of stepchildren. The stems are thin and fragile. The formation of a bush consists in obtaining several stems.
The variety is suitable for cultivation both in film greenhouses and in the open field.
The main qualities of the fruit
Large-fruited variety. The weight of one fruit reaches 300-400 g. The color of ripe tomatoes is very beautiful - bright amber-honey. Their shape is round, even and slightly flattened. The skin is firm and smooth.
Taste characteristics
It is characterized by a delicate sweet taste, reminiscent of honey, with a pleasant rich aroma. If grown in a sunny place, the taste will be maximized. Due to their dense consistency, the fruits easily tolerate long-term transportation and long shelf life, while not losing their presentation.
In cooking, the purpose is wide. They are consumed both fresh and processed. Fruits are especially in demand in baby and diet food.
Ripening and fruiting
The plant is medium early in ripening time. The harvest begins to ripen at 110-115 days from the moment of emergence. Harvested from mid-July to late August. If the weather is cool, then the ripening and fruiting period will be extended, and the first harvest will ripen only by September.
Yield
The honey-sugar tomato has a stable yield. 2-3 kg are obtained from one bush. Up to 7 fruits are formed on one brush.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
To obtain strong seedlings, the seedling method of growing is used. Sowing seeds begins 60 days before planting in a permanent place. Use special containers or peat cups. It is preferable to take the soil ready-made in the store. So you can save yourself from unnecessary time expenditures in the preparation of the planting land.
Before planting, the seeds are disinfected in a weak solution of potassium permanganate, soaking them for several hours. To speed up the germination process, they can also be soaked for a day in a special solution to stimulate development. They make holes in the soil 1-1.5 cm deep, carefully deepen the seeds, sprinkling them with earth and not ramming them hard. Irrigation is carried out carefully with warm water so as not to accidentally wash the seeds.
For seedlings to grow healthy, you need a constant source of light and a temperature of at least 23 degrees Celsius. A few days before planting in a permanent place, the seedlings must be hardened, first leaving them in the fresh air for 20 minutes, and then increasing the time to 2 hours.
After the appearance of 2-3 full-fledged leaves, a pick is made. They begin to plant no earlier than the end of April in a greenhouse and mid-May in open ground. However, in this case, regional characteristics should be taken into account.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener will be able to harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
Due to the fact that the plant is tall, it is not necessary to thicken the beds. On one square meter, no more than 3 seedlings can be planted, observing an interval of 50 x 50 cm. If a bush is formed into 1 stem, 6 seedlings can be compacted and planted.
Growing and care
A honey-sugar tomato is not particularly demanding in care, although it calmly tolerates a transplant, steadfastly withstanding any climatic conditions. But to get a good and bountiful harvest, you have to work hard.
Further care of the crop consists in the introduction of complex and mineral fertilizers, regular watering at least 1 time per week, but without waterlogging. The best option is drip irrigation. Loosening of the soil and weeding contributes to an increase in yield. For less moisture loss from the soil, mulching with straw or hay is carried out.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Disease and pest resistance
Differs in persistent immunity to many infectious diseases, pests practically do not infect bushes. For preventive purposes, the plant can be treated with special preparations during the flowering period.
Growing regions
The main cultivation area is regions with a cold climate (Siberia, the Urals, Transbaikalia). However, the variety has proven itself well in warmer areas.
Review overview
Honey and sugar is very popular among gardeners. According to reviews, the variety is especially appreciated for its sugar taste. Children especially liked the bright orange tomato. Experienced gardeners do not consider the plant to be whimsical in growing, but due to the large branching it is advised to follow the planting scheme and carry out regular pinching, as well as tie up fragile shoots that break under the heavy weight of the fruit.
