The Mahitos tomato, or Mahitos, was created in the Netherlands. The originators took the promotion of their product seriously. Tomato seeds are not only commercially available in the Russian Federation, but are also officially included in the State Register of Approved Varieties in 2012. The hybrid was developed by Rijk Zwaan, which ranks 4th in the world in vegetable breeding.

Description of the variety

Indeterminate bush, with large, medium and dark green large leaves, up to 2 meters high. Tomatoes can be taller if desired. Stems are powerful, strong, internodes are of medium length, the plant is harmonious and even. There is a lot of foliage, it is abundant and active.

The main qualities of the fruit

The Mahitos tomato has medium-sized fruits, weighing 200-220 grams, round, uniform, calibrated, beautiful. Individual fruits can reach 600-700 grams, but rarely. Collected in a brush of 3-7 tomatoes. Each branch has 5 flower brushes, which is quite small for an indeterminate culture. Unripe fruits are even green in color, without a spot at the stalk. Ripe ones are red. The skin is smooth, firm, very resistant to cracking. The pulp is juicy, elastic, the chambers are large, in each fruit there are 5 chambers with juice and seeds.

Taste characteristics

The taste is described as excellent. However, it should be borne in mind that mature and dense tomatoes rarely have a bright taste. Mahitos is a versatile tomato. It is grown for sale, for fresh consumption, salads, main courses and first courses. It is poorly suited for the preparation of fresh drinks, cocktails. Good for canning: winter salads, pickles, ketchups. The fruit can be used for the popular Mediterranean snack - sun-dried tomatoes. Drying is carried out in the sun or in the oven for at least 5-7 hours.

Ripening and fruiting

The Mahitos tomato is a fairly early crop, ripening 105-110 days after germination. On high agricultural technology, you can remove the first fruits after 90 days. The return of the fruits is smooth, it is better to remove from the bush in a state of ripeness, without spreading the fruits for ripening.

Yield

Productivity - 3.4 kg per 1 sq. m. But this is only a guideline. Depending on the method of growing, a tomato can give 2 times more.

The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground

Seedlings are planted early. In heated greenhouses no later than 2-3 decades of January, if it is planned to plant in an unheated greenhouse, sowing for seedlings is carried out in mid-late February. Seedlings are planted in the ground when 8-10 true leaves appear, 25-35 cm high. In the greenhouse, the daytime air temperature should not be less than + 12 ... 15 ° С, the soil - not less than + 8 ... 10 ° С. The night temperature should not drop below + 5 ° С, but preferably + 8 ° С. It is important that the temperatures indicated are stable.

Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener can harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.

Landing scheme

The spacing in the rows is 70 cm, between the plants 40 cm.

Planting a tomato is a very important and painstaking business. In order to get a good harvest of tomatoes, you need to competently approach the issue of planting. When planting a tomato in the ground, it is necessary to take into account many factors - correctly determine the timing, prepare the soil, correctly calculate the distance between plants, take into account the rules of crop rotation.

Growing and caring

The Mahitos tomato is recommended to be grown indoors. Garter and bush shaping are required. Form into 1-2 stems. The plant has active foliage, which takes nutrients from the fruit. Leaves will need to be carefully removed. And you will also have to adjust the rates of watering and dressing so that the tomato does not begin to "fatten" and go into the tops. Watering will also affect the taste, bland or sweeter.

The hybrid is claimed to be resistant to diseases, however, as a prophylaxis, special preparations for processing tomatoes in greenhouses, for example, "Previkur Energy", "HOM", "Bacterra", "Alirin-B", will not interfere. This will protect the plant from microorganisms that cause the appearance of various types of rot, late blight, fusarium wilting, alternaria, necrosis, brown spot. Many of these drugs simultaneously stimulate the growth of the root system. For insects, spider mites, thrips or aphids, the universal preparation Fitoverm is traditionally used.

It is important to carefully read the manufacturer's recommendations: not all preparations for open ground can be used in greenhouses.

To shoot tastier and sweeter tomatoes, it is recommended to follow the advice of experienced gardeners.

  1. Provide a very sunny place for the plant.

  2. Remove the ripe tomatoes from the bush, and do not lay them out for ripening.

  3. Tear off the leaves next to the ripening brushes so that the nutrients go to the fruits, and not to the tops.

The Mahitos tomato is very good for extended cultivation. There are various schemes for increasing the fruiting period of tomatoes in the middle lane.

The first scheme is interplanting and the Dutch Futagrow technology.

It involves replanting young plants, while the old ones are pinched, stopping their growth and fruiting. The organization of replacing old plants with new ones can be different; with Futagrow, old and new plants are swapped every 8 weeks. In practice, this method is feasible only in regions of the Russian Federation with sufficient illumination throughout the year. The method requires a fair amount of skill and thoughtful technical equipment of the greenhouse. And also year-round cultivation requires special attention to the sanitary condition of plants.

The second scheme is an extended turnover.

The plant is planted in January, harvested in spring, late March or April, continue to harvest until November, then new plants are planted and the cycle repeats. With this method of growing, Mahitos tomatoes can reach 4-10 meters in length, and the yield of the bush increases significantly. The scheme is not suitable for too hot summer. The quality of too old plants becomes worse by the middle of summer, so sometimes a third scheme is used instead of an extended turnover.

The third scheme is the turnover in autumn and winter.

Overgrown old plants in the summer are replaced with new ones, which guarantees a surge in yield in the fall. The best and most abundant fruits are obtained from March to June and from September to October. The method also requires skill, because planting new tomatoes in the summer, hot period is not very favorable for plants. Young plants are whitened to protect them from excess light.

Watering tomatoes is not difficult. After planting, the plant is watered at such intervals that the soil remains moist. In dry weather, when it does not rain for a long time, watering can be carried out every day, but usually the beds with tomatoes are irrigated 2-3 times a week.
The methods of tying tomato bushes can vary significantly, depending on the availability of available material, the method of fixation, and also the variety. In general, it is recommended to adhere to the following scheme: first, the central stems are grabbed, and then, as the fruits ripen, the lateral branches.
One of the important conditions for tomato agricultural technology is the correct formation of the bush. The formation of tomato bushes means performing the following steps: pinching, pinching, trimming the leaves, normalizing the ovaries.

A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.

It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.

Treatment and prevention of diseases and pests
When growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, diseases often occur due to a violation of the temperature regime and excessive humidity. The most common diseases are fungal (late blight, cladosporium, rot).
The fight against diseases and pests of tomatoes in open areas can be quite difficult. This is because nightshades are exposed to a wide variety of pathogens and insect pests.

Review overview

The Mahitos tomato is recommended for personal subsidiary plots, but can also be grown for commercial purposes. Its advantages: excellent density and keeping quality of fruits, beautiful aligned shape, excellent set. Each flower will bear fruit. The fruits can be kept fresh for up to 2 months.

Cons: not as high yield as other varieties, common taste. Some gardeners even noted that this is the worst-tasting tomato in their collection - insipid, tasteless. May be affected by gray mold. Some were also unhappy with the yield. However, others point out that Mahitos is ideal for extended cultivation, it has excellent returns and characteristics. The fruits do not fall off and are set even without additional pollination.

It is worth paying attention to this culture for those who want to eat tomatoes for 2 months after the last harvest, until November and even the beginning of December, grow for sale and gravitate towards unusual growing schemes in order to obtain a large number of fruits.
