Every summer resident or farmer dreams of growing early varieties of tomatoes on their site, which have excellent taste, consistently bear fruit and do not require huge efforts during care. These include the early ripe tomato variety Leopold, which grows well both in a greenhouse / greenhouse and in a garden bed. Breeding history
The Leopold hybrid is a development of Russian breeders of the Gavrish agricultural firm (Volok, Amcheslavskaya, Morev, Degovtseva and Gavrish). A hybrid was created in 1995. The task was set - the breeding of an ultra-early and productive variety with simple agricultural technology. The variety was added to the Rosreestr in 1998. During the same period, tomatoes were allowed for use. The variety is zoned in the Central region. In the regions of the 3rd light zone, tomatoes are grown in greenhouses, and in the southern strip - in open ground.
Description of the variety
Leopold is a determinant plant, reaching a height of 100 cm in greenhouses and 70-80 cm in garden beds. Erect bushes are moderately dense, the foliage is dark green, medium branching, a strong central stem, a developed root system and an intermediate type of inflorescence. The formation of the first fruit cluster occurs after 8-9 leaves, while 6-8 fruits are tied. On a healthy bush, up to 5-6 fruit clusters can be formed.
When growing a crop, it is imperative to form a bush of 1-2 stems, and the plant does not need pinching, however, according to some farmers, even partial removal of the stepsons increases the yield. Despite their short stature, the bushes need to be tied to a support, which ensures sufficient ventilation of the plant and access to light in the right amount.
The main qualities of the fruit
Leopold is a medium-fruited tomato species, it weighs 81-102 g. The berries have a round, regular shape and rich red color, diluted with a dark speck at the base. In an unripe form, tomatoes are colored light green. The skin of the fruit is smooth with a pronounced shine. Due to the density and elasticity of the peel, tomatoes tolerate transportation well and can be stored for a long time. The characteristic of the variety is that the berries grow in the same shape and size.
Tomato belongs to the universal, so vegetables are wonderful and healthy fresh, in the form of canned food and processed dishes, they are ideal for whole-fruit canning.
Taste characteristics
Leopold tomatoes are delicious and aromatic. Their flesh is fleshy, moderately dense, contains few seeds and is not hollow inside. In addition, sugar content is present in the pulp. The taste of a tomato is close to the classic - sweet and sour, and the aroma is spicy. White veins and rods are not formed in the pulp.
Ripening and fruiting
The Leopold hybrid belongs to the ultra-early. Less than 3 months (89 days) pass from the moment of germination to the first berries.Fruiting occurs in June-July. The fruits are ripening amicably and quickly.
Yield
The variety gives stable and high yields. Subject to the basic rules of care, the culture will certainly thank you with a bountiful harvest. On average, 3-3.5 kg of ripe berries are harvested from the bush.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
Sowing seed for seedlings is in April. Seedlings are pre-disinfected and treated with a growth stimulant. For better germination of sprouts, you can provide a greenhouse effect by using glass or film. At the stage when 2-3 leaves appear on the bush, planting (diving) of plants should be carried out in separate pots. For the healthy growth of bushes, it is worth maintaining the indoor temperature at + 20 ... 23 degrees, as well as a sufficient amount of light. A week before transplanting, the seedlings need to be hardened, exposing them daily to the street in order to adapt them to new weather conditions.
Planting of seedlings on the garden bed is carried out in late May - early June, and in the greenhouse a little earlier - from May 1 to May 15. Seedlings are planted at the age of 30-35 days. At the same time, the average daily temperature should reach + 15 ... 18 degrees, and night frosts should be left behind.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener will be able to harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
Compliance with the planting density of the crop is one of the important rules of agricultural technology that must be observed. It is recommended to have 3-3.5 plants per 1 m2. Optimal layout: 40x50 cm.
Growing and care
For growing tomatoes, loose, breathable, fertile and moist soil is suitable, as well as a sufficient amount of heat and light. Agrotechnics are standard - watering (water must be settled), loosening and weeding the soil, applying fertilizing of organic and mineral types, forming a bush and obligatory garter, removing stepchildren and extra leaves if necessary, as well as preventing insect infestations and infection with diseases.
Greenhouses are characterized by regular ventilation, which controls the level of air humidity, which directly affects the growth and development of the crop. In addition, it is worth considering that when growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, the bushes form into one stem.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Disease and pest resistance
The hybrid variety is characterized by high immunity to many tomato diseases - fusarium wilt, cladosporiosis, VTB. Due to early ripening, the culture bypasses phytophthora. Protection against fungal infections will be provided by preventive spraying with special preparations - fungicides.
Resistant to adverse weather conditions
The variety has good stress resistance. The tomato is cold-resistant, easily tolerates prolonged heat and drought, and does not react to sudden temperature jumps. The only negative natural factor for the Leopold hybrid is excessive humidity.
Growing regions
You can grow this tomato species throughout Russia, Ukraine, choosing the right place - an open garden or a closed greenhouse.
Review overview
Both inexperienced gardeners and farmers love to grow Leopold tomatoes, since the nightshade crop is characterized by stable and high yields, excellent taste, an attractive presentation, as well as long keeping quality. Among the shortcomings, only a certain deficiency of seed and the presence of excessive sourness in the taste are indicated.
