Many farmers, as well as novice gardeners, prefer to grow tomatoes on plots and in greenhouses, which give consistently high yields, without requiring complex agricultural technology in return. These include the early ripe tomato variety Red Arrow.
Breeding history
This hybrid vegetable crop is the result of many years of work by a group of domestic breeders (Gorshkova, Kvasnikov, Ignatova). The tomato species was bred in 1990, and entered into the State Register of Breeding Achievements of the Russian Federation and allowed for use in 1992. The goal of the scientists was to create a variety that bears fruit perfectly in greenhouse conditions, as well as in beds in regions with a fairly warm climate.
Description of the variety
The Red Arrow tomato bush is characterized by a determinant type of growth. A medium-sized plant stretches up to 120 cm in height. In the garden, the height of the bush may be slightly lower. The bush is characterized by a weak thickening of dark green foliage, a strong central stem and flexible branches. On the main stem, from 10 to 12 racemes are formed with 7-10 ovaries (fruits) in each. The nightshade culture involves the formation of a bush in 2 stems and the obligatory tying to a support, since the branches and stems can bend under the weight of the berries. According to experienced gardeners, the plant does not need pinching.
The main qualities of the fruit
The Red Arrow tomato is a representative of the medium-fruit tomato class. The vegetable grows up to 100-150 grams. The berry has a regular round shape and uniform color. The advantage of the variety is the same shape and size of the growing berries. In a state of full ripeness, the fruit has a classic red color, and in an unripe state it is light green. A feature of the variety is the presence of a dark speck at the base, which disappears as the tomato ripens.
Tomato peel is dense and firm with a slight sheen, reliably protecting it from cracking during transportation and storage. The keeping quality of the variety is average - in a cool place (refrigerator) tomatoes can be stored for up to 4-5 weeks.
Taste characteristics
The taste of tomatoes is classic, and the aroma is spicy, inherent in many types of tomatoes. The taste contains both sweetness and sourness. The flesh of the berry is fleshy, moderately dense, juicy, with a small number of seeds. No white rod is observed inside.
Tomatoes have a universal purpose, therefore they are excellent fresh, for canning, for pickling, for processing into pasta and ketchup.
Ripening and fruiting
The Red Arrow tomato is an early maturing species of Solanaceae. From full shoots to the first ripe tomatoes, it takes 95-100 days. The berries ripen together, so you can remove the tomatoes with whole brushes. It is characteristic that when fully ripe, tomatoes can hang on the branches for a whole month. The active fruiting phase lasts from July to September, which allows you to enjoy fresh and aromatic tomatoes for a long time.
Yield
Bountiful harvests are one of the advantages of this variety. Subject to correct agricultural practices, growing tomatoes in greenhouses, you can collect up to 35-42 kg of tomatoes from 1 m2. In the open field, yields are slightly lower. 4-4.5 kg of berries can be removed from one bush in the garden per season.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
The culture is grown by the seedling method.Sowing seeds is carried out in early spring - from March 20 to April 10 (60-65 days before transplanting). The seed is sown in prepared soil and covered with polyethylene or glass, which will accelerate the germination of seeds. Seeds grow better in a warm and sufficiently lit room. At the stage of the appearance of several leaves on the bush, a dive is carried out in individual pots. After 8-10 days, the seedlings are fertilized with a mineral complex. 10-14 days before transplanting, the bushes should be hardened, which will facilitate the process of plants getting used to new conditions.
It is recommended to transplant the bushes to a permanent place at the stage when 5-7 true leaves appear in plants. This usually occurs between May 15th and June 5th. To the greenhouse earlier, and to the beds later.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener can harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
You need to grow tomatoes, observing the density and planting pattern. This is what allows the plant to grow and develop correctly, and the summer resident to take care of it. It is recommended to plant bushes at a certain distance - 4-5 bushes per 1 m2. The optimal layout for planting is 50x40 cm.
Growing and caring
Before planting seedling bushes, it is necessary to prepare the soil - to clear it of grass and weeds, apply fertilizers, loosen it so that the soil breathes well and absorbs moisture. The best place is considered to be where beets, pumpkins, cabbage or carrots previously grew.
The nightshade culture Red Arrow requires complex care, which includes: irrigation with settled water, fertilization, loosening and weeding of the soil, forming and tying bushes, as well as protection from insect invasions and diseases. In greenhouses, do not forget about regular ventilation so that an excessively humid environment is not created.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Disease and pest resistance
The variety has a high resistance to infection with many diseases typical of nightshade crops - cladosporiosis, tobacco mosaic virus, fusarium wilting and macrosporiosis.
Resistant to adverse weather conditions
The Red Arrow culture is quite stress-resistant. It tolerates well the lack of light, short drought and heat. The only thing that the plant is afraid of is gusty winds and drafts.
Growing regions
The variety can grow and give high yields in different climatic zones, including regions with risky farming. In most regions, the variety is grown in greenhouses and only in the southern strip - in open ground.
Review overview
This type of tomato is massively grown both in summer cottages and on farmlands, since it is characterized by numerous advantages. These are stable and high yields, unpretentious care, quick adaptation to soil and climate.
