Canopus is one of the brightest stars in the sky. And it was in her honor that the tomato variety was named. The determinant variety fully justifies its name, without giving vegetable growers any problems when growing it.

Breeding history

Scientists from the Siberian Institute worked on the creation of Canopus: Hristov, Domanskaya, Gubko, Zalivakina and Kamanin. A group of breeders was engaged in the development of a resistant variety that could be recommended for all regions of the country. Scientists have achieved their goal, and since 2000 Canopus has been in the State Register.

Description of the variety

Canopus is usually grown outdoors. This is a rather low variety, it will not stretch more than 50-60 cm. The crop is covered with an average number of leaves. The foliage is small, dark green, the same as that of most other varieties of tomatoes. Flowering is marked by an abundance of inflorescences. The first of them appears above 7 or 8 leaves, further inflorescences go through 1-2 copies.

The main qualities of the fruit

Each Canopus brush forms 3 to 8 berries. Fruits that are not ready for harvest are distinguished by a green tint, there is a spot near the stalk. Then the tomatoes turn red. The weight of a single tomato is 100-106 grams, but with proper care, a weight of 400 grams can be achieved. Cylindrical fruits have no ribbing, they are smooth, glossy. There is an articulation on the stem of these large berries.

Taste characteristics

The products obtained from the Canopus variety taste more sour than sweet. To add sweetness and richness, tomatoes should be grown where there is plenty of sun. Do not forget about the timely thinning of the foliage so that all the bushes have enough light.

Ripening and fruiting

It takes 110-120 days for Canopus to reach full ripeness. These dates mean that the variety is mid-season.

Yield

The Canopus variety has good yielding characteristics. Even without special maintenance, 3.1 kg can be collected from 1 m2. With enhanced agricultural technology, the indicators grow to 5-6 kg.

The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground

For seedlings, Canopus seeds are sown after March 15th. Before planting, the grains must be disinfected with manganese. The soil is calcined in an oven. A wooden container is suitable for growing, a box is better. Seeds are placed in grooves, sprinkled with soil. Then it is sprayed from a spray bottle. In order for the plants to germinate faster, the container with the material is placed on the windowsill, maintaining the temperature at 25-26 degrees Celsius.

A pick is carried out 20 days after germination, it is very important for Canopus. After that, you can start hardening, because the tomatoes will grow in the open air. On the last day before disembarking, the containers are left outside for the whole night. The bushes will be ready for transfer by about mid-May.

Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener can harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.

Landing scheme

The place reserved for the landing of Canopus is well dug up. If the preparation is carried out in the fall, it is better to mix the soil with compost. And also other fertilizers are added to the planting holes: ash and superphosphate. The land should be loose and fertile. Before planting, the holes are watered with settled warm water. The planted plant is immediately spud and sprayed with Bordeaux liquid. The recommended planting pattern for Canopus is 40 by 50 cm.

Planting a tomato is a very important and painstaking business. In order to get a good harvest of tomatoes, you need to competently approach the issue of planting. When planting a tomato in the ground, it is necessary to take into account many factors - correctly determine the timing, prepare the soil, correctly calculate the distance between plants, take into account the rules of crop rotation.

Growing and caring

It is not difficult to cultivate the described variety. Formation is carried out in 3 or 4 stems. The plant is short, but will still need a garter due to the weight of the fruit. The removal of thickening leaves is imperative, because due to lack of light, the fruits become sour.

Canopus should be watered on average once a week, it is best to do this in the morning. The procedure is carried out so that the liquid goes strictly to the root. A young bush needs about one and a half liters, an adult - at least 5.

Top dressing does not play a big role, but it is recommended for the best yield. Tomatoes love organic matter in the form of mullein or herbal infusions, as well as mineral complexes. Fertilizers should be alternated. In total, no more than 4 dressings will be needed per season. If you don't want to cook them yourself, you can always go to the stores for complex tomato products.

Watering tomatoes is not difficult. After planting, the plant is watered at such intervals that the soil remains moist. In dry weather, when it does not rain for a long time, watering can be carried out every day, but usually the beds with tomatoes are irrigated 2-3 times a week.
The methods of tying tomato bushes can vary significantly, depending on the availability of available material, the method of fixation, and also the variety. In general, it is recommended to adhere to the following scheme: first, the central stems are grabbed, and then, as the fruits ripen, the lateral branches.
One of the important conditions for tomato agricultural technology is the correct formation of the bush. The formation of tomato bushes means performing the following steps: pinching, pinching, trimming the leaves, normalizing the ovaries.

A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.

It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.

Disease and pest resistance

Canopus is weakly susceptible to:

  • late blight;

  • diseases of a bacterial nature;

  • TMV.

However, preventive examinations still need to be carried out. So, aphids can appear on plants of this variety. And also Canopus is sometimes attacked by spider mites. If potatoes grow nearby, then the Colorado potato beetle will parasitize on the tomatoes. The most dangerous pest insect is the bear. She eats roots, causing the death of the bushes. It is impossible to catch the parasite manually, so it is better to just scare it away.Marigolds and garlic planted next to Canopus will help with this. And in order for diseases and pests to accurately bypass the beds, weeds should be weeded in a timely manner, watering with potassium permanganate should be carried out and the soil should be sprinkled with wood ash.

Treatment and prevention of diseases and pests
When growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, diseases often occur due to a violation of the temperature regime and excessive humidity. The most common diseases are fungal (late blight, cladosporium, rot).
The fight against diseases and pests of tomatoes in open areas can be quite difficult. This is because nightshades are exposed to a wide variety of pathogens and insect pests.

Resistant to adverse weather conditions

Canopus is a unique variety in terms of sustainability. It can survive in conditions of drought, cold, sudden temperature changes. This tomato does not tolerate only prolonged waterlogging.
