Harvest varieties of tomatoes suitable for whole-fruit canning are highly valued among summer residents. The Empress hybrid is one such variety. The culture is zoned for cultivation throughout the country.
Description of the variety
The Empress, bred by Agrofirma Sedek LLC, is an indeterminate variety intended for growing under cover. Growing up in a greenhouse, the stem stretches up to 2 meters in height. The roots are very powerful, they extend both deep and wide underground. Plants have a large number of dark green leaves. It is noticed that on specimens with a pinched top, the foliage becomes more saturated.
The main qualities of the fruit
Fruits undergoing the stage of formation have a color close to light green. Ripe berries turn red, there is no spot near the stalk. Reverse-ovate Empress tomatoes have a slight ribbing, as well as a bulge at the tip - the so-called spout. As for the weight characteristics, they will be 100-150 grams. The peel of such tomatoes is very elastic, and this allows them to be transported without problems.
Taste characteristics
Cream tomatoes are very dense in texture. The taste is good, sweet, with a small amount of acid.
Ripening and fruiting
The Empress reaches full technical maturity in 95-105 days. Such indicators are typical for mid-early varieties. Harvesting is carried out in 2-3 months of summer.
Yield
In greenhouse conditions, the variety showed itself as a high-yielding variety. The standard collection rate is 9.1 kg / sq. m.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
Preparing seedlings is the first step in growing Empress tomatoes. The seeds are to be planted in March or April. The material must be disinfected in advance by keeping it in a light pink manganese solution for 24 hours. The soil is also watered with the same solution. The grains are sown loosely, lightly sprinkled with soil, while the earth should be moist. As they grow, they provide all the necessary conditions and temperature conditions, spraying is carried out from a spray bottle. After picking, each seedling is allocated a separate glass.
The Empress's seedlings are planted in the greenhouse 2 months after the first shoots appear. Before that, the roots of the seedlings are briefly immersed in water with "Heteroauxin".
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener will be able to harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
To prevent plants from competing with each other for nutrients, you need to plant no more than 3 bushes per square meter. The earth should not be sour. Acidic soils can be rendered neutral by liming. This is very important for this variety. Holes are dug at a distance of 50 cm from each other. Each one is filled with organic and mineral supplements. The planted tomato is well watered and immediately tied to a peg. You can also put mulch on the ground. If this is done, then the plants will not need water for a whole week, or even more.
Growing and care
Hybrid variety Empress does not require complex care. It is enough to water the plants once a week, but during flowering it will need to be done twice as often. In order to prevent a hard crust left after watering, it is customary to loosen and mulch the earth.
It is advisable to make top dressing in the autumn months in order to replenish the supply of nutrients, because this variety will pull them all out. Plants planted in spring will also need fertilization. The first time the seedlings are fertilized 10 days after planting. Chicken droppings or mullein will do. Further, do not feed until the second brush is dissolved. When this happens, they wait another 14 days, then make the following composition:
mullein solution - 2 liters;
"Solution" - 1 tablespoon;
copper sulfate - 3 grams;
manganese - 3 grams.
Fertilizer is applied under each bush. The same dressing is given to plants at the time of the beginning of fruiting.
The bushes are quite tall and the variety is indeterminate. This means that the tomato will continue to grow without stopping. To prevent this, you need to pinch the tops. Thanks to a simple procedure, the fruits will be larger and ripen faster. And it is also necessary to cut off the stepsons who regularly appear on the seedlings. If this is not done, the plantings will begin to thicken, which will complicate the harvest. When forming, 2 stems are left, so the plant will spend energy on fruits, and not on growing new foliage.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Disease and pest resistance
The Empress is resistant to ailments such as top rot of fruit, verticillium and tobacco mosaic virus. She rarely picks up fungal diseases, and even then with a simple non-observance of growing conditions. To prevent the appearance of an ailment, it is necessary to ventilate the greenhouse, do not flood or thicken the plants. Pests in the greenhouse appear infrequently. Whitefly and spider mites can annoy, but they are easy to get rid of with professional means.
Review overview
Many vegetable growers have already tried to raise the Empress. In the overwhelming majority, the variety is cultivated in a greenhouse. Summer residents say that the plant bears excellent fruit and gives a good harvest of cream fruits. Smooth and beautiful berries are pleasant to eat directly from the bush or put in blanks. However, the density of the pulp is not to everyone's liking.
If the climate is very mild, then it is quite possible to try to plant the Empress in open ground. Summer residents who have done this are advised to use trellises for garters and shade the sprouts so that they are not burnt by the sun.
