Among the variety of varieties, the Giant red tomato stands out for its unique characteristics.

Breeding history

The variety belongs to amateur selection. It was withdrawn in 1980 on the territory of the USSR. Included in the State Register in 1989. The tomato was created as a crop for growing in open or closed ground, with a high degree of productivity and large fruits.

Description of the variety

Tomato Giant is red indeterminate, so the growth of the stem is not limited by anything. The height of the bush is 1.5-1.8 m. The stems are powerful, thick. In this case, it is necessary to organize a system of trellises or drive in pegs next to the bushes for further tying. The crown is spreading, so it needs to be pruned. The recommended number of stems is 1-2.

The leaves are large, elongated. The front plate is dark green, matte. The back plate is light green, with slight pubescence. A characteristic cross-section in the middle and veins can be observed on the sheet. There are large notches along the edging. Leaves tend to curl in too hot weather or in an environment that is too humid.

The first buds will be formed at the level of 10 leaves from the ground, the subsequent ones - every 3.

The pluses of the variety include:

  • yield;

  • fruiting period;

  • ripening period;

  • external qualities;

  • immunity to a number of fungal diseases;

  • tolerance for prolonged drought.

Of the minuses, it can be noted:

  • indeterminacy;

  • there is no possibility of whole-fruit canning;

  • garter to the support;

  • short shelf life;

  • does not tolerate transportation;

  • pinching.

The main qualities of the fruit

The giant red tomato is distinguished by its large fruits. The mass of one tomato can reach 800 g. Most often, the largest fruits are at the bottom of the bush. The higher the branches, the smaller the vegetables become, an average of 350-450 g. The rind is a deep red hue. Raspberry-red color is less common. The texture of the skin is slightly ribbed, glossy, delicate. Due to the strength of the growth, the peel can crack and slightly deform the surface of the fruit.

The pulp is sweet, juicy, not watery or loose. Inside, 6-7 chambers with seeds are formed.

2 fruits ripen on one hand. On average, 4-6 fruits appear on one bush.

Tomatoes are not stored for long after harvest. Suitable for fresh consumption, for juices, tomato pastes and sauces.

Taste characteristics

The variety is characterized by a sweet aftertaste.

Ripening and fruiting

Tomato Giant red belongs to mid-season varieties. Fruit ripening period ranges from 105 to 110 days. Harvesting takes place in several stages from July to September.

Yield

Many gardeners note that, on average, yields are low. Up to 3-4 kg are collected from one bush. From one square meter - 10-12 kg of tomatoes.

The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground

Before sowing, the seedling boxes must be prepared. They should be filled with earth and spilled abundantly with water. At this time, the seeds are soaked and those that have surfaced are removed. The remaining seeds are kept in a potassium permanganate solution. Excess moisture is removed with a cotton swab. Wells are formed in the seedling boxes. The depth of the fossa is 3 cm.

After sowing the seeds, the boxes are covered with foil and placed on the windowsill. The seeds will hatch in 5-6 days. It is necessary to dive the seedlings when 2 strong leaves are formed at the stalk.

The seedlings must be monitored. With intensive growth, the bush must be closed from the sun or create a slight partial shade, with a temperature of no more than +18 degrees.

Watering is necessary with a spray bottle, but not too abundantly. All dressings are applied in liquid form.

Seedlings are taken outside in early May for acclimatization. First by one hour, and then gradually you need to increase the time.

It is necessary to plant seedlings at a temperature not lower than +16 degrees. For open ground, the night temperature must also be taken into account.

Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener will be able to harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.

Landing scheme

Before planting seedlings, the selected place should be dug up, adding useful minerals there. The seedling hole is shallow. There should be 40x40 cm between the bushes.At the time of the formation of the hole, it is necessary to drive in pegs nearby to tie the trunk, since some bushes can reach a length of 60-80 cm.

After planting the seedlings, everything is plentifully spilled with water. The next watering should be done only after 1-2 weeks.

Planting a tomato is a very important and painstaking business. In order to get a good harvest of tomatoes, you need to competently approach the issue of planting. When planting a tomato in the ground, it is necessary to take into account many factors - correctly determine the timing, prepare the soil, correctly calculate the distance between plants, take into account the rules of crop rotation.

Growing and care

A good harvest and a healthy crop will help maintain compliance with some agrotechnical issues.

  • Timely watering should occur once every 3-5 days. It is worth observing the condition of the soil so as not to overmoisten it. On the open ground, watering is carried out in the absence of the rainy season.

  • Passing is carried out during flowering. Since the bush is growing too actively, the stepchildren will form quickly. In addition to the stepchildren, the lower leaves are also removed to normalize air circulation.

  • In the greenhouse, the air temperature should be no more than +30 degrees. If necessary, you can open all the doors for ventilation.

  • Top dressing costs 3-5 times per season.

Watering tomatoes is not difficult. After planting, the plant is watered at such intervals that the soil remains moist. In dry weather, when there is no rain for a long time, watering can be carried out every day, but usually the beds with tomatoes are irrigated 2-3 times a week.
The methods of tying tomato bushes can vary significantly, depending on the availability of available material, the method of fixation, and also the variety. In general, it is recommended to adhere to the following scheme: first, the central stems are grabbed, and then, as the fruits ripen, the lateral branches.
One of the important conditions for tomato agricultural technology is the correct formation of the bush. The formation of tomato bushes means performing the following steps: pinching, pinching, trimming the leaves, normalizing the ovaries.

A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.

It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.

Treatment and prevention of diseases and pests
When growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, diseases often occur due to a violation of the temperature regime and excessive humidity. The most common diseases are fungal (late blight, cladosporium, rot).
The fight against diseases and pests of tomatoes in open areas can be quite difficult. This is because nightshades are exposed to a wide variety of pathogens and insect pests.
