Liana-shaped tomato varieties have a number of advantages over ordinary low-growing ones, therefore they are actively grown both in private gardens and on an industrial scale. The Russian breeding tomato Havana cigar recently appeared on the market, but managed to gain popularity due to its excellent taste and yield.
Description of the variety
A mid-early high-yielding variety with a prolonged fruiting period forms tall liana-like bushes. The fruits of the Havana cigar are distinguished by an even, elongated shape. The crop is perfectly transported and stored for a long time, keeping its presentation.
The main qualities of the fruit
The variety got its sonorous name from the unique elongated cigar shape of the tomatoes. Ripe tomatoes weigh an average of 100-150 g (sometimes the weight reaches 200 g), and they reach 18 cm in length. In the collection, almost all tomatoes are of the same size. Each brush produces 5-7 fruits. They are characterized by a bright red color, high density of the skin and pulp, and a small number of seeds.
Strong and elastic skin does not crack. This ensures good transportability of the crop. The Havana cigar is an ideal variety for canning and pickling: tomatoes are resistant to pathogenic flora, they are conveniently placed in large jars, they are salted well, do not become too soft, do not burst.
Taste characteristics
Despite the dense fleshy and small-chamber structure of the pulp, these tomatoes have a rich, but delicate sweet and sour taste. They will decorate the table in the form of pickles, suitable for making salads, sauces, ketchups, juice. They can become the basis of a fragrant savory snack - more and more often, the recipe for sun-dried tomatoes, which came from Italy, is used in the preparation.
Ripening and fruiting
The variety belongs to the medium early, from the emergence of shoots to the collection of the first fruits, it takes from 105 to 115 days. The fruiting period is long: the harvest is harvested in stages from July to August.
Yield
Tomato Havana cigar gives a consistently high yield both in greenhouses and in the open field. About 2 kg of fruits are harvested from one bush, and from 1 m² to 10-12 kg. Fully ripe red tomatoes are picked for fresh consumption or for processing. Collected brown and green specimens will withstand long-term storage in a cellar or other cool rooms.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
In late February - early March, about two months before planting the bushes on the site, seedlings are sown. A special soil for tomatoes is being prepared or bought. For disinfection, you can spill it with boiling water or a manganese solution. With the appearance of the leaves, the seedlings dive into separate containers. For successful further cultivation, good lighting and watering should be provided, top dressing, hardening of seedlings, and the introduction of growth stimulants should be provided.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener can harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
The planting scheme provides for the location of about 3, but not more than 5 seedlings per 1 m². A distance of about 40-50 cm is maintained between the bushes, the same amount should be between the rows. Common planting option: in two rows in a checkerboard pattern.
Growing and caring
The maximum yield of a Havana cigar is obtained on bushes formed into 2 stems. The indeterminate type of growth involves pinching the top of the main stem, the constant removal of excess shoots and leaves, the obligatory tying of the bush to supports or a net.
For the rest, agricultural technology does not have significant differences: timely watering, hilling and loosening of the root soil, the introduction of seasonal complexes of mineral fertilizers will allow you to get an excellent harvest.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Disease and pest resistance
The resistance of the variety to major diseases is noted. In order to prevent tomato alternariosis and late blight disease, it is recommended to periodically spray with fungicides (for example, the drug "Ordan"). Such treatments are done from the stage of appearance of the first true leaves, but stop no later than 3 weeks before harvesting the fruits.
The following measures will help to protect against pests:
disinfection of a greenhouse or greenhouse;
annual replacement of the topsoil;
adherence to the planting scheme, avoid thickening;
keeping the site clean, burning tops in autumn, removing weeds.
Resistant to adverse weather conditions
The variety is recommended for cultivation in the regions of Siberia, the Urals, the central region and the middle zone. The Havana cigar is a rather unpretentious variety, resistant even to the difficult conditions of a cool and cool summer.
