Each gardener has his own favorite varieties of tomatoes, which he grows from year to year, but there are such types of tomatoes that will not leave anyone indifferent. These include the mid-season Gina tomato variety.

Breeding history of the variety

Gin's nightshade crop is the result of the work of a group of Dutch breeders, whose task was to create an unpretentious variety that grows in almost any climatic conditions, especially in the southern strip. The variety was entered in the State Register of the Russian Federation, and was also approved for use in 2000.

Description of the variety

A seed plant is a bush of a determinant type of growth, stretching up to 70 cm in height. As a rule, the bushes are quite sprawling, with medium branching and thickening. The stems of the plant are powerful, but they require support - a garter to a support, since the fruits of the variety are very weighty. Low bushes are formed by 2-3 trunks that grow directly from the root. The root system of the plant is strong, so the bushes can grow even in infertile soil. The species does not need to be pinned.

The main qualities of the fruit

Gina's tomato is a rounded fruit with subtle ribbing. The mature tomato has a traditional orange-red color. The variety belongs to the class of large-fruited, since the average weight of a tomato is 190-210 grams, but in greenhouses the fruits grow up to 300-350 g. The peel of the tomatoes is dense enough with a gloss, which protects against cracking and ensures good transportation. The keeping quality of tomatoes is a problem, since it is very weak.

Taste characteristics

The taste of the fruit is not very harmonious, but rich, tomato, with a dominant acidity and subtle sweetness. The pulp of the fruit is juicy, fleshy, very aromatic. The variety is universal, therefore it is eaten fresh, as well as canned, pickled. Tomatoes are especially good when processed into sauces, juices, dressings.

Ripening and fruiting

The Gina variety is a mid-season nightshade crop. From the moment the first sprouts appear until the ripening of tomatoes, 110-115 days pass. The fruiting cycle of the variety is extended from July to September, which allows you to enjoy fresh and aromatic tomatoes for a long time. Tomato bears fruit equally well, growing both in the open field and in a film greenhouse.

Yield

The culture is characterized by high yields. Observing the basic rules of agricultural technology, up to 10 kg of tomatoes can be harvested from 1 m2 per season. The weather can make small adjustments to the yield indicators.

The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground

Sowing seeds for seedlings is best done from mid-March to early April, that is, 60-65 days before planting in open ground. Pre-sowing material can be disinfected by soaking in a solution of potassium permanganate, and sorting can be done in order to understand which seeds are suitable for growth. The ideal soil for growing seedlings will be a mixture of soil with sawdust and peat. Covering the boxes from cling film will help speed up the emergence of shoots. With the appearance of 2-3 real leaves, you can do a dive (seating in separate pots).10-14 days before disembarking to a permanent place, it is recommended to harden the bushes, taking them out daily to fresh air.

Since the variety is thermophilic, planting in open ground is carried out in a warm season - at the beginning of June, when the winter frosts have passed, and the soil is sufficiently warmed up.

Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener will be able to harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.

Landing scheme

It is recommended to plant 3-4 bushes per 1 m2, since they are prone to overgrowth. The optimal layout for planting is 40x50 cm.

Planting a tomato is a very important and painstaking business. In order to get a good harvest of tomatoes, you need to competently approach the issue of planting. When planting a tomato in the ground, it is necessary to take into account many factors - correctly determine the timing, prepare the soil, correctly calculate the distance between plants, take into account the rules of crop rotation.

Growing and care

Cultivation of a seed crop is possible in two ways - seedling and seedling (direct sowing of seeds into the ground). The seedless method is effective only in the southern regions of cultivation. For this, a well-sunlit area with fluffy and fertilized soil is suitable. After sowing seeds into the soil, it is necessary to ensure the greenhouse effect using polyethylene or agrofibre, which will accelerate germination of sprouts. Further, it is recommended to thin out the bushes and ensure proper agricultural technology.

It is good to grow a crop in an area where onions, beans, zucchini, and cabbage previously grew. The soil is pre-cleared of debris and weeds, it is well dug to improve air permeability, complex fertilizers are applied.

Seedlings of Gina's tomatoes need complex care, which includes: watering with standing water - once a week, periodic loosening of the soil, feeding, consisting of 4 stages, weeding and measures to protect against viruses and pests. The garter is performed once, shortly after planting the bushes in open ground. Some farmers recommend careful hilling of bushes. Patching is not carried out, since few lateral shoots are formed. For better ventilation, you can remove / tear off the lower leaves on the bushes.

Watering tomatoes is not difficult. After planting, the plant is watered at such intervals that the soil remains moist. In dry weather, when there is no rain for a long time, watering can be carried out every day, but usually the beds with tomatoes are irrigated 2-3 times a week.
The methods of tying tomato bushes can vary significantly, depending on the availability of available material, the method of fixation, and also the variety. In general, it is recommended to adhere to the following scheme: first, the central stems are grabbed, and then, as the fruits ripen, the lateral branches.
One of the important conditions for tomato agricultural technology is the correct formation of the bush. The formation of tomato bushes means performing the following steps: pinching, pinching, trimming the leaves, normalizing the ovaries.

A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.

It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.

Disease and pest resistance

The variety has a high immunity to many diseases of nightshade crops - verticillium, fusarium wilting, root rot. The peak of plant ripening coincides with the increased activity of late blight, so you should not forget about careful preventive measures.

The greatest enemies of culture are the invasion of pests - aphids, the Colorado potato beetle and the bear, which can be dealt with using special preparations and folk remedies. Spraying with insecticides is very effective against mass invasions of pests.

Treatment and prevention of diseases and pests
When growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, diseases often occur due to a violation of the temperature regime and excessive humidity. The most common diseases are fungal (late blight, cladosporium, rot).
The fight against diseases and pests of tomatoes in open areas can be quite difficult. This is because nightshades are exposed to a wide variety of pathogens and insect pests.

Resistant to adverse weather conditions

Seed culture of Gin does not tolerate temperature fluctuations - a sharp drop in temperature, at which the seedlings may even freeze. In addition, heat and drought can affect the reduction in the number of ovaries, so you need to control such weather barriers with proper watering. It is also important to control moisture because excessive moisture and moisture can reduce the sugar content of tomatoes. The optimum air temperature for the growth and fruiting of Gin's tomato is considered to be from +12 to +30.

Growing regions

The variety is recommended for cultivation in all climatic zones of Russia. Moreover, tomatoes are massively grown in Ukraine and Moldova. In the southern regions, tomatoes are grown in open ground, and in temperate and northern regions - in greenhouses. In addition, the culture is very popular among farmers in Asia and Europe.

Review overview

The large-fruited variety Gina has long won the attention of summer residents and farmers who grow crops on an industrial scale, so there are many reviews of the plant. Most gardeners characterize this species as tasty, juicy, giving abundant harvests. Many are pleased with the fact that the bushes do not require pinching and numerous tying (only once). Along with the numerous advantages of the variety, there are also some disadvantages. The most important disadvantage is considered to be poor keeping quality.
