Sweet tomato varieties attract many growers. And if they are still unpretentious and resistant to weather disasters, then this is an additional plus. The varieties that have gained popularity for a long time include the Duchess tomato, developed by L.A. Myazina.
Description of the variety
The Duchess hybrid has been in the state register since 2007. This tomato is usually grown in the Far Eastern and West Siberian regions. Determinant bushes, reaching 50-70 centimeters in height, grow equally well in greenhouses, under a film shelter, under the open sky. Light green small leaves grow on the bushes in an average volume.
The main qualities of the fruit
On the low bushes of Duchesse, medium-sized red fruits ripen in unison - their weight is 45-50 grams. Even in an unripe form, the berries form an elongated pear-shaped shape, as well as a smooth thin rind. Duchesse's inflorescences are simple about the structure, there is an articulation at the base.
Taste characteristics
Duchesse has an incredibly sweet taste. This is clear even from the name of the variety. The aftertaste is sweet, with hints of caramel. The sugar acid index is 2.7%, and the dry matter is 5% by volume. The pulp of tomatoes is quite dense, but very tender, with increased juiciness.
The harvested berries are suitable for almost any type of culinary preparation. The only thing that will not succeed is getting juice. Due to the density of the pulp, such a process will be highly laborious.
Ripening and fruiting
Duchess is usually considered a mid-season tomato variety. Such varieties mature in 110-115 days. Duchesse is harvested in the fall, from September 10 to October 1.
Yield
In most cases, 2.5-3.8 kg are removed from 1 m2. If we talk about more extensive plantations, then 253-379 centners will be obtained per hectare.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
In order for the seedlings to be ready for transplanting at the right time, they must be planted on time. Sowing is usually done in the first half of March. You can also plant directly into the ground, then it should be done in 1-2 ten days of April.
If the planting containers were previously used, then they should be disinfected. An effective technique is dousing with boiling water, and then treatment with a manganese solution. The seeds, if not prepared by the grower, germinate and stimulate growth. Planting is carried out in loose soil with a large amount of humus. After placing in the ground, the grains are sprayed and cellophane is stretched on top.
Seedling care is probably the most time consuming process when growing this variety. It is necessary to closely monitor the temperature, water and feed the sprouts on time. The same is required in the open field, where the sprouts are at first under cover.
If the seedling method of growing in containers was chosen, then the bushes should be transferred to a permanent place of residence in the second half of May.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener can harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
When determining bushes in the ground, they adhere to a scheme of 0.4x0.7 m.
Growing and caring
Even before planting tomatoes, you should pay attention to the soil. Despite its unpretentiousness, Duchess will give sweet fruits only if it is planted in fertile soil. The earth is dug onto the bayonet of a shovel, superphosphate is introduced into it. High acidity is reduced with wood ash or dolomite flour. Soil spillage with "Fitosporin" will also be useful.
Landing is carried out in cloudy weather, while each hole should be abundantly moistened. The sprouts are lowered into holes, covered with dry soil. It will not be necessary to water them for a week and a half. After this time, the first irrigation is carried out and then watered, depending on the weather, but at least once a week. Cold water is contraindicated for tomatoes.
There is no need to tie up the plants, and this is great news for those who cannot spend a lot of time on the beds. Feeding is a good idea, though. At the beginning of the growing season, you will need to add mullein, poultry droppings, diluted with water, or weed infusions. All fertilizers are applied by the root method. As the ovaries form, and then the fruit, the tomatoes will need minerals. Such dressings are sold in complex form in any gardening store.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Disease and pest resistance
Duchess is resistant to top rot of fruits, Alternaria, TMV and many bacterial diseases. But if you take care of tomatoes poorly and do not carry out disease prevention, then the variety can hit Fusarium. Such a disease occurs with high humidity, and if the summer is rainy and cool, then in almost 100% of cases. You can get rid of Fusarium with fungicides, but it is better not to allow it. To do this, you need to plant tomatoes according to the scheme recommended by the originator, do not fill them in and ventilate them in a timely manner if the bushes are located in a greenhouse. Planting in the sunniest places will also help reduce the risk of fusarium.
Resistant to adverse weather conditions
Plants resist well to almost any natural disasters. So, they are not harmed by short-term cold or heat. The variety is also drought tolerant. The only thing he is afraid of is excess moisture. In this case, the culture quickly becomes susceptible to the fungus.
