Growing tomatoes at their summer cottage, everyone prefers non-capricious hybrid varieties that give rich yields. The mid-season Dutch variety Benito is very popular among summer residents.
Breeding history of the variety
The Benito tomato is the result of many years of work by Dutch breeders, whose goal was to create an early hybrid variety with incredibly high yields and capable of growing not only in greenhouses, but also in the open field. The species was entered into the State Register in 2000. The culture is zoned in the Volgo-Vyatka, Central Black Earth, East Siberian and Far Eastern regions.
Description of the variety
The Benito culture is a plant with a determinant type of growth, which belongs to the hybrid class. A low-growing bush grows up to 50-100 cm and is characterized by moderate splendor, which is formed by large green leaves. Thanks to its powerful stem, the bush is able to withstand many ripening fruits. In some cases, support and a garter are essential.
The main qualities of the fruit
The fruits are distinguished by an elongated plum-like shape with a slight ribbing on the surface. When fully ripe, tomatoes have a uniform red color. When unripe, tomatoes are light green in color. The average weight is 40-70 grams. Tomatoes grown in greenhouses are somewhat larger - their weight is about 100 g. The peel of the fruit is quite dense, so the tomatoes are not afraid of transportation. In addition, the dense skin prevents cracking. The keeping quality of tomatoes is very high.
Taste characteristics
Tomatoes have firm flesh with few seeds. The taste is very bright, tomato with sweetness. Especially vivid taste is manifested in fruits grown on bushes in the open field. This variety of tomatoes is universal, therefore it is perfect fresh, in salads, as well as in canned form - whole, juice, sauces.
Ripening and fruiting
Due to the fact that the variety is medium early, it takes 95-113 days for full ripening (from germination to the first ripe tomatoes). In addition, tomatoes can be picked green, as they ripen well in indoor conditions. On the bushes, the fruits ripen evenly and do not crumble.
Yield
The yield indicators of the variety are good. With proper care, up to 6.35 kg of tomatoes can be harvested from 1 m2. When grown in greenhouses, even higher yields are harvested. Farmers who grow Benito tomatoes for commercial purposes, from 1 hectare harvested up to 635 centners.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
Benito tomatoes are grown in seedlings. Sowing seeds for seedlings should be done in March. For this, the seeds are pre-soaked for better germination. The soil where the seeds will be sown should be loose, breathable, fertilized. Good germination requires warmth and adequate lighting. When 2-3 true leaves appear, a pick is performed. After about 2 months, the seedlings will reach a height of 25-30 cm, it will be possible to plant them in open ground. 10-14 days before planting the bushes in the ground, it is necessary to harden, lowering the room temperature by 2-3 degrees, and also take out the boxes with seedlings for 15 minutes to fresh air. Planting seedlings in open ground occurs in well-warmed air - in mid-May.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener will be able to harvest at all.All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
The optimal planting scheme is 40x50 cm. It is recommended to plant no more than 6-8 bushes of seedlings per 1 m2. In the greenhouse, seedlings are planted in a checkerboard pattern, which simplifies maintenance and prevents thickening.
Growing and care
Benito tomatoes grow well on fertile soils, which are well fluffed, breathable, fertilized. The site should be illuminated by the sun, and also be free of weeds and other debris. Tomatoes grow beautifully in places where cabbage, pumpkin or cucumbers were previously grown.
Comprehensive care consists of regular watering (morning and evening), application of mineral and organic fertilizers, loosening of the soil, improving air exchange, pinching, eliminating excessive thickening, and preventive measures to protect the crop from viruses and diseases. It is necessary to carry out the step-sonking every week.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Disease and pest resistance
The vegetable crop has a good immunity to many viruses and diseases - viral tobacco mosaic, verticillosis, fusarium wilting, but weak protection against the top rot of the fruit. Spraying with preparations containing copper will help prevent infection with late blight. The fight against insects (aphids, bear, thrips, slugs) attacking bushes at all stages of growth and development is carried out using a concentrated soap solution and insecticides.
Resistant to adverse weather conditions
The variety has good resistance to almost all climatic conditions. It is quite winter-hardy, it tolerates even sharp temperature drops perfectly.
Growing regions
The hybrid type of tomato Benito quickly adapts to different climatic conditions, therefore it can grow in the southern regions and in the northern ones. Mass cultivation of the Dutch variety takes place in the Central, Ural, East Siberian, Far Eastern and Volga-Vyatka regions, as well as in Ukraine and Belarus.
Review overview
Many reviews of amateur gardeners and farmers about Benito tomatoes say that the variety is fruitful, absolutely unpretentious in growing, quickly gets used to the soil and climate. Most note the excellent taste of tomatoes, long shelf life and transportation. The only drawback of culture, which experienced gardeners point out, is the fragility of the root system.
