This variety will interest amateur gardeners with its early ripening, compactness of the bush and disease resistance. You can find out more about the characteristics of the Aurora variety and its features in this article.
Breeding history
This hybrid belongs to the first generation (F1) and was bred by the breeder Yuri Ivanovich Panchev. Admission to mass use and entry into the State Register took place in 2002.
Description of the variety
The culture is a short, compact bush - up to 90 cm high in open ground and up to 70 cm when grown in film greenhouses. Medium-sized, dark green, standard leaf plates. Fruit ovaries are formed over the 7th leaf, the subsequent ones are laid every two leaves.
Shoots are dense, strong, erect, but require tying to a support during the period of fruit growth. In order for the culture to bear fruit more abundantly and develop well, the plant should be formed into one stem.
In addition to external characteristics, it is worth mentioning the positive qualities of culture:
- high yield, ultra-early ripening and the possibility of re-laying fruit ovaries;
- immunity to most diseases;
- ease of care and cultivation;
- amicable ripening and abundant fruiting;
- good presentation and high transportability.
Among the minuses, if you can call them that, it is worth highlighting only the obligatory pinching of plants.
The main qualities of the fruit
Unripe fruits are evenly colored in a light green hue, without any stripes or patterns. Ripe tomato is gaining a bright red color. The skin is smooth, dense, with a slight waxy bloom. The peduncle has an articulation. The inflorescences are of a simple type, ordinary.
The shape of the fruit is large, rounded, the ribs are almost not prominent. Fruits are collected in dense brushes of 5 pieces, up to 6 such brushes can be placed on one stem. The weight of one tomato reaches 110-120 g.
Taste characteristics
The taste is standard for all hybrid cultures, weak, but pleasant. The flesh of the fruit is dense, ideal for harvesting.
Ripening and fruiting
Since the variety is ultra-early, the harvest takes place on average as early as 80 days after sowing the seeds.
Yield
The yield for such a compact bush is high. Up to 16 kg of fruits can be harvested from 1 m2 of culture. One bush on average brings up to 4-5 kg of tomatoes, this is due to the fact that after harvesting, the plant re-throws out lateral shoots.
The timing of planting seedlings and planting in the ground
Tomato seeds of the Aurora variety must be sown in containers 50-55 days before the planned date of planting in open ground or in a greenhouse; according to the standard table, sowing is done at the beginning of the second month of spring.
Planting work with seeds and young seedlings is standard, as for all tomato crops. It is obligatory to pick seedlings at the stage of building two pairs of true leaves.
Growing tomato seedlings is an extremely important process, because it largely depends on whether the gardener will be able to harvest at all. All aspects must be taken into account, from seedbed preparation to planting in the ground.
Landing scheme
When transferring young plants to open ground, the crops should be planted at a distance of 35 cm from each other and about 40 cm between the rows of the beds. Do not plant more than 6 plants on 1m2 of area.
Growing and care
Subsequent care is reduced to timely watering and fertilization. Tomatoes are watered no more than twice a week, bringing in moisture within the near-stem circle. So that water does not quickly evaporate from the soil, the surface is mulched.
The lower leaves must be removed, between the soil and the stem there must be a space free from overgrowth so that there is no rot and fungal diseases.
Fertilization begins during the active growing season of the plant. The first top dressing consists of minerals, and is applied, as a rule, 2 weeks after planting the crop. The second time tomatoes are fertilized during the budding period, using phosphorus and potassium. The third feeding falls on fruiting, during this period the plants need to add sodium humate and superphosphates.
A plant needs different micronutrients at each stage of growth. All fertilizers can be divided into two groups: mineral and organic. Folk remedies are often used: iodine, yeast, bird droppings, eggshells.
It is important to observe the rate and period of feeding. This also applies to folk remedies and organic fertilizers.
Disease and pest resistance
The Aurora variety is extremely resistant to most diseases affecting the Solanaceae family. Tomatoes, subject to agricultural technology, are practically not affected by Alternaria, tobacco mosaic virus, are not susceptible to fusarium wilt, phytophthora.
When infected in open ground with aphids, slugs and other insects, plants are treated with any insecticide.
Growing regions
Aurora is suitable for growing almost throughout the territory of the Russian Federation, with the exception of regions close to the north. Plants are planted in greenhouses:
- in Central Russia and the North Caucasus region;
- in the Far East and the Urals;
- in the West Siberian, Lower Volga, Middle Volga and other regions.
Aurora is an ideal crop for multi-planting. While large mid-season varieties are ripening, Aurora will begin to pamper you with a fresh, marketable crop by the beginning of summer. The advantages of the culture and its unpretentiousness in care make it possible to plant plants even in regions with short or cold summers.
