To get a good harvest of tomatoes in your area, the plants need to be fed regularly. For this purpose, phosphorus-potassium fertilizers are excellent. They must be used during the entire period of growth and fruiting of plants.

When are they needed?

It is very easy to notice the lack of elements important for development and fruiting. The lack of phosphorus is evidenced by:

  • dark or brown leaves;
  • underdeveloped root system;
  • slow growth of seedlings;
  • poor flowering;
  • gradual drying of foliage.

The leaves react to the lack of potassium first of all. They darken and their edges dry out. Over time, the color of the foliage becomes brown. If potassium is not enough for mature plants, then green veins can be seen inside the cut tomato.

Having noticed such changes, the plants must be fed immediately. If this is not done, flowering will be poor, and the fruits will grow small.

Tomatoes growing both in the greenhouse and in the beds need feeding with phosphorus-potassium fertilizers.

There are different types of fertilizers with potassium and phosphorus.

Phosphorus-containing dressings

Fertilizers containing phosphorus have been used by gardeners for many years. You can buy them in almost all specialized stores.

  • Superphosphate. It is one of the best fertilizers to be applied when planting seedlings outdoors. You can buy such a product both in granules and in liquid form.
  • Ammophos. This product is quite concentrated, so you need to use it with care so as not to harm the plants. It is best to add ammophos when planting seedlings in open ground or during the flowering period of tomatoes.
  • Bone flour. It is a good natural source of phosphorus. It is worth using this organic dressing when planting seedlings. Pour two tablespoons of the drug into each well.

When using such feedings, you should always pay attention to the instructions on the packaging so as not to harm your plants.

Fertilizers with potassium

Fertilizers containing potassium are usually applied in early spring. Several basic types of fertilizers can be used for feeding.

  • Potassium chloride. This agent is a fine crystalline powder. It is most convenient to add it, having previously diluted it in water. Most often, plants are treated with a solution of potassium chloride in spring.
  • Potassium sulphate is a white crystalline powder. This product is mainly used to feed plants grown on light soils.
  • Kalimagnesia. Fertilizer with this name is also used on light soils. It is available in both dry and liquid form. As a rule, such dressings are used for foliar treatment of plants. Fertilizer is excellent for feeding greenhouse crops.

When working with substances containing potassium, goggles and gloves should be worn to protect the skin and respiratory tract.

How to cook?

Gardeners often use not only chemicals for plant nutrition, but also folk remedies. They can be prepared with your own hands from improvised products.

Ash based mortar

Ash-based fertilizers are great for all types of soils, and the acidity level is irrelevant. The ash solution is quite simple to prepare. To prepare it, you need to take a bucket of water and a kilogram of dry ash. The dry powder must be diluted in a container with hot water.Then the contents must be thoroughly mixed and placed in a warm place for 4 hours. After this time, the solution must be mixed again and immediately used as directed. Such a remedy is introduced at the root.

Banana peel solution

Banana skins can also be used as a top dressing. For 3 liters of water, you need to take 3-4 banana skins. They contain enough potassium to feed a small garden bed.

Cooking method:

  1. for a start, the skins need to be crushed, and then poured into a jar;
  2. warm water must be poured there;
  3. the mixture should be put in a warm place for 3 days;
  4. after this time, the solution must be filtered and then used as directed.

Eggshell fertilizer

This is another folk remedy that can be used to fertilize plants. Preparing such a top dressing is very simple.

Cooking method:

  1. first of all, the shell needs to be crushed, and then poured into a three-liter jar;
  2. then the contents must be poured with warm water and placed in a warm place for several days;
  3. the finished mixture must be filtered.

After that, you can start fertilizing the tomatoes.

How to apply correctly?

In order for the phosphorus-potassium dressing to be as useful as possible for the plants, they need to be fed in the right way.

  • For the first time, fertilizers containing such nutrients must be applied after 2-3 leaves appear on the tomatoes. You can re-feed the plants after 2-3 weeks. Be sure to pay attention to the beds during the picking period of tomatoes. In the early stages of tomato development, it is best to use complex feeding.
  • It is just as important to feed them during the flowering stage. During this period, plants are especially in need of potash fertilizers. You can use both purchased feed, and bird droppings or manure.
  • After harvesting, when all plant residues are removed, phosphorus fertilizers are applied to the ground. During the winter period, top dressing has time to completely dissolve, so the planted plants very quickly assimilate all the nutrients they need and grow healthy and strong. Potash dressings should not be used in the fall.

When growing tomatoes at home, you should always monitor their condition. After all, the harvest will be rich and tasty only if the plants have enough of all the necessary nutrients.
