Almost every gardener grows tomatoes on his site. In order for the harvest to be of high quality, and the tomatoes to be tasty, the plants must be protected from most diseases that can harm them. Top rot, which is dangerous for tomatoes growing both in the greenhouse and in open beds, also belongs to such diseases.

What it is?

Top rot is a fairly common disease. It can be wet or dry. The first type of rot is also called bacterial. The diseased plant is covered with wet spots of various shapes. Superficial or dry affects even unripe tomatoes. It appears as small, dry, dark spots.

This disease spreads quickly enough. If you do not start the fight against top rot in time, you can lose a third of the total crop.

Reasons for the appearance

Top rot appears on tomatoes growing in open ground or in greenhouses. Most often this happens due to the fact that the plants lack calcium. Leading to the appearance of apical rot can be:

  • lack of moisture in the soil or its excess;
  • strong acidity of the soil;
  • hot and dry climate;
  • excessive amount of nitrogen in the soil;
  • damage to the root system.

Also, top rot forms on the surface of plants and in the event that they are under stress. Therefore, do not water the bushes with cold water or allow sudden changes in temperature in the greenhouse.

Signs of defeat

You can notice that the plants are sick by regularly examining your site. The following signs indicate that tomatoes are affected by apical rot:

  • the appearance of dark spots on the surface of the fruit;
  • fast yellowing and drying of foliage;
  • the plant looks bad and seems too lethargic;
  • deformation and death of shoots;
  • slowing down the growth of fruits or changing their shape;
  • the appearance of small cracks on the surface of tomatoes.

If an infected bush is left unattended, most of the tomato crop will be destroyed. In addition, neighboring plants can also be affected by this disease. Therefore, the treatment of tomatoes should be started immediately after the first signs of it are detected.

Control measures

There are many ways to combat this disease. The choice of control methods depends on the degree of damage to the plants and the preferences of gardeners.

Agrotechnical

To protect the tomato beds, you need to observe the crop rotation on the site. Growing tomatoes is on moisture-consuming soil. If the soil is too light, peat and turf soil should be added to it before planting tomatoes. They will help keep water in the soil.

Timely treatment of seeds with disinfectants will also help prevent the development of the disease on the site. Before planting in the soil, they can be soaked in a three percent solution of potassium permanganate for half an hour. Plants can be protected by placing the seeds in a mixture of 1 gram of ferrous sulfate and a liter of warm water. You need to keep them in this solution for a day.

When the first fruits appear on the bushes, the site will need to be examined especially carefully. Noticing dark spots on the tomatoes, the fruits must be picked immediately. Tomatoes affected by this disease cannot be used for food.

Also, they should not be put in a compost barrel. This could lead to infection of even more plants in the next year.
