Bordeaux mixture is a highly effective remedy for tomato diseases. Many novice gardeners are wondering how to make this tomato spray liquid on their own. We will talk about this in the article.

Need to use

The Bordeaux mixture has been used by gardeners for over 100 years. This first fungicide in the world was an invention of the French botanist P. Milliard. The mixture appeared in the second half of the 19th century. Even now, the tool is very popular, it is actively used for the prevention and treatment of various plant diseases.

The mixture consists of 3 ingredients: copper sulfate, lime and water. The fight against infections is at the cellular level.

Copper sulfate is often used as an independent element as a growth stimulator, stabilizer of photosynthesis processes.

Lime is a substance made from recycled chalk. Lime is formed from the following components: limestone, dolomite, calcite. It also contains other minerals, but in extremely small quantities. The scope of lime is quite wide. For example, tree trunks are whitened with it, as it is resistant to precipitation and does not lose its primary healing qualities for a long time.

Various fruit trees, bushes, beets, onions, potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes are sprayed with Bordeaux liquid. It is an irreplaceable remedy for stains on plant foliage, powdery mildew, rot and other diseases. Liquid is also indispensable for the prevention of late blight in tomatoes, the treatment of dangerous viral infections and fungus. It is important not to miss the time when processing is required, otherwise you may not get the harvest of the so beloved culture of summer residents.

The mixture is suitable for cultivation in garden beds and greenhouses.

The drug copes well with diseases: late blight, brown spot, streak.

  1. Late blight Is a fungal disease that can infect a large number of bushes in a short time. Has the appearance of brown spots and white bloom. The fungus infects tomato bushes, while infecting neighboring beds. Experienced gardeners are advised to urgently start treatment with Bordeaux liquid.

  2. Brown spot Tomatoes growing in the greenhouse are most commonly affected. The lower parts are affected with brown spots, and the upper ones are lighter. First, it is recommended to remove and burn all diseased parts, and only then process the plants.

  3. Streak - a transient disease that eats the leaves and roots of tomatoes. The fruits become tasteless, and the stems die very quickly.

Pros of using Bordeaux liquid:

  1. positive effect on tomatoes;

  2. high efficiency in comparison with other means;

  3. the ability to treat a wide range of diseases;

  4. all components of the mixture can be easily purchased at almost every agricultural store;

  5. long-term effect after spraying (more than 2 weeks);

  6. does not harm insects that pollinate tomatoes;

  7. resistance to precipitation, does not wash off for a long time.

Cons of using:

  1. you need to be extremely careful in preparing the mixture, all proportions must be observed, otherwise the plant can be harmed;

  2. copper accumulates in the soil, which negatively affects the growth of plants;

  3. the mixture cannot be used together with other means;

  4. there is a danger of human poisoning, therefore, precautions must be taken, the mixture must be prepared in the absence of children and animals;

  5. if the mixture is used incorrectly, you can lose part of the crop.

Preparation

Bordeaux liquid is toxic, so consider safety precautions in advance. All preparation is best done with protective clothing, goggles, gloves and a respirator.

Used containers must not be taken for other purposes. Bury any remaining liquid in the ground outside the garden.

To successfully prepare Bordeaux mixture, you will need the following components and inventory:

  • water;

  • copper sulfate;

  • quicklime;

  • two containers, but not made of metal and plastic (glass, earthenware, enameled dishes are suitable);

  • strong stick;

  • a piece of gauze.

You can buy ready-made mixture in specialized stores. You need to add water to it according to the instructions, and the composition is ready. You can prepare the mixture yourself. For tomatoes, a 0.75% and 1% solution is needed, for fruit trees - a 3% solution.

On an area with plants of 10 sq. m it is necessary to prepare 2 liters of solution. Compliance with the proportion is mandatory, otherwise the deviation from the norms is dangerous for plants.

Preparation:

  1. in a container (non-metallic) in 2 liters of hot water, copper sulfate must be dissolved;

  2. pour the solution with cold water in an amount of 3 liters, you get a vitriol solution;

  3. then we will prepare a lime mortar - in 1 liter of water, it is necessary to mix quicklime until a thick consistency (like sour cream) is obtained, lime contacts with water and becomes slaked;

  4. dilute the solution in 4 liters of cold water;

  5. the gauze must be folded in four, and the lime mortar must be filtered through it;

  6. stir each resulting solution thoroughly;

  7. the vitriol solution must be carefully, in a thin stream, poured into the lime solution with constant stirring;

  8. you should get a bright blue liquid - the mixture is ready.

It is important to remember that spraying is possible only after checking the mixture for an acid reaction. To do this, any metal object (a piece of wire, a nail) is dipped into a bucket of solution. If the color is red, more alkali must be added, but very carefully so as not to harm the plants.

The drug must be prepared on the day of use. If for some reason the spraying is delayed until the next day, add 5-10 g of sugar to the formula to preserve it.

Application features

It is not difficult to process tomatoes correctly, but do not forget about some rules.

  • Tomatoes can be sprayed 4 times in one season.

  • If you see that the seedlings have begun to hurt, then they must be sprayed from a spray bottle 2 weeks before planting in open ground.

  • In order to prevent late blight, as well as other infections, tomatoes are processed for the first time in late June - early July.

  • During the period of active flowering and the formation of ovaries, liquid cannot be used.

  • There should be at least 10 days breaks between spraying.

  • It is worth refraining from using the mixture during fruiting. Drops of the mixture are dangerous to humans.

  • 2 weeks before picking tomatoes, you can spray the plants one last time.

  • Watering before and after spraying is undesirable. High humidity levels contribute to leaf burns.

Many are wondering: is it possible to eat fruits that have been recently sprayed? Naturally not. Tomatoes must not be eaten for 8 days after processing. Before eating, tomatoes must be thoroughly washed under running water.

In addition to prophylactic and medicinal properties, Bordeaux mixture contributes to the fact that the fruits are stored longer and retain their taste.

In addition to the Bordeaux mixture, you can use preparations containing copper oxychloride. They are also good because they can have a healing effect "from the inside", because they are able to penetrate deep into plant cells. An undoubted plus is that it is allowed to mix these funds with other substances.
