One of the most dangerous pests that can settle on fruit bushes and trees is aphids. It is quite difficult to get rid of an insect, because it adapts very quickly and well to any environment and weather conditions. And if not so long ago, various chemical preparations were used to combat aphids, today organic and natural folk remedies are preferred. One of the most effective and easy-to-use options for aphid control is tobacco dust.

Peculiarities

In the process of making tobacco, waste is generated, which is called tobacco dust. Even though it contains large amounts of nicotine, it has a good effect on plants and a destructive effect on various insects. In addition to nicotine, tobacco contains nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus and magnesium. These are the elements that feed the plants. Tobacco is very often used instead of pesticides to control pests such as aphids, ants, copperhead and leafworm.

Aphids are a very dangerous insect that can cause great harm to many horticultural and horticultural crops. The population of aphids can reach several thousand insects on one plant, which very often leads to its death. Among all the currently existing means for combating this pest, it is tobacco dust that gives the necessary result. The nicotine alkaloid, which is highly toxic, releases an odor that is deadly to the pest when decomposed.

There are several ways to use tobacco dust. Plants can be fumigated, powdered or sprayed. You can also prepare an infusion for application to the soil. For him, snuff is used. The choice of method depends on the type of plant, the place of planting and the number of pests on it.

Dusting

One of the easiest ways to treat plants with tobacco dust is dusting. Tobacco leaves need to be crushed and ground. The finished powder is poured onto the plants 2 times per season. It should be used in small quantities, about 30-35 g per 1 m².

Dusting plants is a very effective method against aphids and gives quick results. It can be used both in the greenhouse and outdoors. You just need to know that for such processing of plants in the open field, it is better to choose warm and calm weather.

Adding a decoction to the soil

Fighting aphid infestation with tobacco dust is possible not only by dusting. An infusion or decoction can be prepared from tobacco dust, which is used for spraying plants or applied to the soil. Both methods are effective. The smell of tobacco dust will spread and prevent aphids from destroying plants.

To prepare a decoction of tobacco dust, you will need:

  • water - 10 l;
  • tobacco leaves - 400 g.

The ingredients are mixed and placed in a cool dark place for 24 hours. After this time, the prepared mixture must be boiled for about 2-2.5 hours. Next, the broth is filtered and another 10 liters of water are diluted. For greater efficiency, grated laundry soap can be added to the liquid. There is no need to infuse the broth - it is immediately ready for use.

If you decide to spray your plants, be sure to wear personal protective equipment. When applying the broth to the soil, be sure to work with gloves.

Precautionary measures

When working with tobacco dust, do not forget that nicotine is its basis, which is very harmful to human health. That is why it is imperative to follow the safety rules.

  • To prevent dust from getting into the eyes or respiratory system, it is necessary to work with glasses, a respirator or a gauze bandage. You should also use protective equipment such as gloves, a hat, and a suit. All parts of the body must be covered.
  • If you poison aphids indoors - in a greenhouse - it is advisable not to go there for a while after pollination.
  • Keep children away from work.
  • After completing the procedure, work clothes are best washed and stored in a non-residential area. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly after applying the substance.

If you are allergic to tobacco or the smell of nicotine, you are not feeling well, it is better to refrain from this procedure.
