All about natural decking
Knowing everything about natural decking is very useful for making the right renovation. It is made of pine and teak, thermo ash and oak. You can also take solid spruce wood planks and other options, but in any case, the correct color and thorough impregnation will be required to process the wood.
Peculiarities
The use of natural decking made of wood can hardly surprise anyone these days. This material is actively used even for decorating suburban space. With the help of decking, experienced designers can easily decorate any room. The completely natural composition ensures the proper level of safety.
It should be noted that the board is made with special polymer additives, which are thoroughly tested in production.
Necessarily in this case there is a certificate that confirms the high quality of the products. Any specialized machining, other than giving the required shape and configuration, is not carried out. Wood of various varieties and species can be taken as a basis. Bulk products are made from common trees. Those who want to stand out usually buy elite wood varieties.
Species overview
The “pine needles” decking board is quite popular - this is its official trade name. A similar product is affordable for the vast majority of customers.
Its service life is long enough to guarantee quiet use for many years. All faces of lumber must be carefully planed.
Moving on to specific species, it is worth noting the advantages of natural solid pine wood planks. Such material is often used for arranging:
- the perimeter of the pools;
- piers;
- various terraces;
- paths in the garden.
Impregnated pine can also be used for decking. It is worth noting that it is very soft and can be squeezed by shoes. Sometimes terraced pine boards are also made from thermosine, which is heated to 190 degrees, thereby achieving a structural change at the molecular level. This treatment improves mechanical strength and resistance to minor damage. Evaporation from thermowood during the production of polysaccharides reduces its attractiveness to pests and pathological microorganisms.
An alternative to thermo-pine is thermo-ash. According to manufacturers, this material is even stronger than oak. From nature, such a tree is already initially distinguished by its hardness, but it also stands out for its beautiful external pattern. The ash texture involuntarily evokes associations with bizarre paintings. It should be borne in mind that ash in its natural form is prone to strong decay in unfavorable conditions.
But after heat treatment, this disadvantage almost completely disappears. At the same time, the density of the material increases, its texture is corrected. By the color, one can judge how intense the temperature effect was. Thermo ash is mechanically strong and resistant to moisture.
It must be remembered that the difference in price between heat-treated and natural wood, regardless of thickness and other parameters, will be relatively small and it is simply irrational to save in this way.
Many people take a keen interest in exotic wood planks. Among them, a well-deserved solid place is occupied by teak. The lumber made from it is not only flawlessly environmentally friendly, but also very beautiful. With the help of such a board, you can decorate garden paths and pools, equip outdoor areas. There is no particular difficulty in teak care.
Another relatively rare type of wood is acacia. It grows in more familiar conditions, but aesthetically acts as a close analogue of teak. Their structure is also very similar. However, the acacia tree has a yellowish-green tint that creates a sense of originality and freshness.
Acacia is reliable and relatively inexpensive; it can be used in humid conditions, for decorating piers and playgrounds.
A more budget option is a spruce decking. In our country, such products are presented very massively. Very long boards - up to 6 m - are made on the basis of spruce wood. The density of this rock is low, which gives rise to both disadvantages (relatively low strength) and advantages (comparative lightness). Spruce boards can be heat treated, which, as with other species, allows them to harden and get a beautiful appearance.
Only special additional processing helps to protect the spruce board from decay. If you choose a material according to hardness, then, of course, you should give preference bleached oak. Strictly speaking, this name can refer to any bleached oak wood. The resulting base color fits perfectly into a wide variety of interior and exterior environments. Its exploitation possibilities are almost endless.
Aspen can be very widely used. This tree is easily split and cut in any way.
Unfortunately, for some reason, the demand for aspen boards is low, and manufacturers produce them mainly to order. It is very difficult to find such a product in free direct sale. But in terms of strength, only such crops growing in large quantities in Russia as oak and larch can be compared with aspen.
As for the cedar blanks, they are favorably distinguished by their pleasant appearance and fragrant smell. The specific arrangement of the fibers imparts excellent mechanical properties. And thanks to the resinous areas, resistance to decay is guaranteed. Cedar board is very soft and extremely easy to process. True, the same circumstance can be considered a disadvantage - for a completely obvious reason.
In many cases, decking is made from linden. It is especially appropriate when decorating a terrace at the exit from the bath. The color can vary, there are both pale white and brownish.
In conclusion, it is worth describing nut, characterized by an impressive high cost, but at the same time outwardly beautiful and eye-catching.
In terms of hardness, such a part of the trunk as a nut burl stands out; in any case, the walnut should be classified as an elite wood species, and its color varies greatly depending on the specific place of cultivation.
Technical indicators:
- density - 560 kg / m3 in a particularly dry form;
- humidity - 15%;
- swelling - from 0.18 to 0.48%;
- modulus of elasticity - 11.7 / 8.33.
Nuances of choice
Of course, you only need to contact a trusted manufacturer. Kiln-dried boards should be purchased whenever possible. In places where the mechanical load is high, the most dense material should be placed. However, there are a few more important points:
- a durable moisture-resistant coating is always expensive;
- anti-slip surface is the best possible option;
- it is imperative to take into account the appearance of the board and its relevance in specific spaces, environments;
- you should always pay attention to the thickness of the material.
Installation tips
Layout of the decking should go over special supports (lag).If it is made perpendicularly, the distance between the lags should be 50 cm, with a diagonal layout, the distance is reduced to 40 cm. The underlying surface is leveled by applying a dry or wet screed. Outdoor installation should be with a slope for optimal drainage of precipitation.
How to process a decking board?
Correct processing of decking involves the use of washable or non-washable types of impregnation. Antiseptics are applied to the back of the structure. This is where moisture is most likely to collect.
An emulsion-type wax coating is applied to the ends. The front surface is protected with construction paints, oils and various varnishes.
In most cases, oil mixtures are used. They very effectively protect the wood surface from moisture and dirt clogging. The work can be done by hand. When the deck board is coated with oil, it will not bubble as much as varnish.
Peeling is excluded, even if the original foundation is not completely perfect. In this case, the wood will not crack. The natural pattern is favorably emphasized. Finally, UV resistance is guaranteed. Decking can be painted with alkyd and oil compounds.
Water-based paints are initially ready for use. If they thicken, you can simply add clean water. The latex version has excellent adhesion and stays on the deck board for several years. He has no smell, but the air will be passed through quite efficiently. Polyurethane paints have the highest reliability.
