Choosing a wooden children's table
By the age of two, babies grow up, and it's time to buy a children's table and chair for classes. Behind them it will be convenient to draw, sculpt, collect puzzles and mosaics, read books. In addition to convenience, a place at the table will allow the child to focus on the lesson, he will have the right association for development. An important advantage will be the formation of an even posture in the child.
How to choose the right one?
There are some selection criteria that you need to be aware of before purchasing.
- The material from which the item is made. It is better if it is solid wood, plywood or, in extreme cases, chipboard. These options are the most environmentally friendly and safe for health. There are also products from plastic, metal, combination of materials on the market. All of them are required to have quality certificates.
If you want the best for your child, wood is preferred.
- Ease of construction. Kids will often move objects, as they will want to draw in the corner of the room, and in the middle, and who else knows where. This factor will be important for the mother as well, since it will often be difficult to move an already difficult object. Therefore, the table should be as light as possible. To do this, choose light wood species such as pine, birch.
- Strength, stability of the table. Pay attention that the table does not swing from side to side, otherwise the child may drop it on himself.
- The structure must be suitable for the height of the child. The kid should be comfortable sitting at the table. He should not lean too much (if the table is low) or stand up to see something on the table (if high).
There are approximate table height norms for a certain height:
- with a child's height of 80-90 cm, a table with a height of 35-40 cm is suitable;
- at 90-100 cm - 40-45 cm;
- 110-115 cm - 48-50 cm, respectively.
Currently, there are also height-varying options. It is a good alternative for preschool children.
- Wooden furniture is coated with a safe varnish or paint. The edges are usually secured with specialized tape to protect against chipping.
- It is better to choose an item with a square or rectangular countertop, as the child's elbows often remain outside the countertop behind the round surface, which leads to poor posture.
Advantages and disadvantages
The advantages of solid wood tables are:
- environmental friendliness, since wood is the safest non-toxic material;
- product strength;
- reliability of the entire structure, which will not allow the table to part or burst under any load;
- an aesthetic look that will delight the child and parents.
The disadvantages of wooden furniture include the fact that it is difficult to wash off old stubborn stains. Therefore, it is better to wipe the table more often. A way out of the situation can be special overlays for the table top made of transparent polyurethane or colored with the image of the alphabet, cartoon characters and others.
Models
Currently, there are many types of children's tables on the market. They can be conditionally divided into several groups.
- Transformer. They are used from the moment the child begins to sit. First, such a table-chair is used to start feeding, and then you can disassemble it and get a full-fledged "workplace". The advantage of transformers is that it can be used for a long time: from 6 months to 4-5 years. It is definitely economical.
- Classic children's table. This is a long-known and familiar table with a square, rectangular or oval shape and three or four legs.Depending on the size, more than one child can be placed for such a model. This is convenient if there are several children in the family of about the same age or if guests with babies often come to you.
- Tables-desks. Experts recommend using these types from 4 years old. The advantage of the table-desk is the table-top adjustable in height and angle of inclination. However, when choosing, it is necessary to focus on the reliability of this mechanism: are there any restraints, can the child independently change the height, how much the desired position is firmly fixed. Models can be equipped with a compartment under a folding table top, side drawers or an organizer shelf on top. There are desks equipped with an easel, holes for paints and cups and other attributes for drawing and developing a baby.
There are also unusual tables. Now there are a great many of them.
- In the form of a playhouse. The tabletop is a roof, which, like a desk, is located at an angle of 30 degrees. The so-called chimney tube is used for the felt-tip pens. House tables are available with a folding roof, which becomes a table top when secured. There is also a shelf for books.
- A semblance of dressing table for girls. Little women of fashion love to imitate their mothers and look in the mirror, trying on different outfits and jewelry. For such children, this dressing table with numerous drawers for trifles is suitable.
- If you have two weather children, you can purchase rocking table... This is a rectangular table with benches fixed to the base. If you turn this structure over, you get a two-seater rocking chair.
There are other unusual models: a set of a chair with a table, which, when assembled, resembles a school bus, in the shape of an apple, which is perfect for a country house, a model whose tabletop is covered with a special film so that you can draw on it with crayons instead of an easel, and others.
Most models have a place to store books, pencils and other things.
This will help you avoid the hassle of finding study items throughout your home. The child will know that everything you need is in one "corner".
With your own hands
You can make a children's table with your own hands. For work, you will need the following tools: jigsaw, sander or plane, sandpaper, drill, screwdriver, tape measure, pencil, self-tapping screws.
- We select the material from which the table will be made. It can be birch, oak, pine, beech. It is best to choose a beech, as it is the easiest to work with, but it is also not cheap. If you decide to make furniture out of plywood or chipboard, then choose panels without knots and defects.
- We make patterns for the main parts of the table: tabletop, legs - 4 pcs., Aprons on the bottom of the table - 4 pcs. Before that, it is better to draw an object with dimensions.
- We transfer the patterns to a wooden sheet and cut them out with a jigsaw. For the countertop, you can use a furniture board, and for the legs and aprons, a long bar. Next, we cut out all the decorative elements (hearts, diamonds and others).
- On the seamy side of the tabletop, draw a line around the perimeter, stepping back 5-7 cm from the edge.
- If the calculations were done correctly, then the table is ready for assembly. We connect all the elements first by hand, and then fasten them with self-tapping screws. It is better to grease all joints with PVA glue, and put washers under the screws so that the wood does not crack. You can use special metal corners that will make the table more stable and reliable.
- We skin all surfaces, glue the ends with an edge and cover with several layers of varnish. Wait time between each layer so that the surface dries. And the table is ready.
Decor
A do-it-yourself table can be decorated independently or bought with a ready-made painting.
One of the most popular models is a table with a truly Russian pattern "Khokhloma" and "Gzhel". The first will have a black base and a red-gold pattern. The second one is in blue and white.You can apply them using a stencil.
Images of cartoon characters, princesses, animals on the tabletop look original.
Monophonic tables of dark or light shades will look sophisticated. Subsequently, they can also be decorated at your discretion.
Ikea tables
Ikea manufactures plain furniture. It has a large number of positive properties: it is made of natural materials, lightweight, easy to assemble, concise, without sharp corners, relatively low cost.
Children's wooden furniture is represented by two collections: "Critter" and "Sundvik". The first is made of poplar, the second is made of pine. Both of them are covered with wood stain and acrylic varnish.
The Sundvik tables are slightly longer, so two children can be accommodated behind it. You can choose with an opening lid, under which there is a spacious drawer for storing accessories, or without. The mechanism has restraints to avoid slamming and injury to the child.
Consumers note only one drawback of Ikea items - insufficient hard coating. Because of this, when struck by hard objects, small dents are left on the surface.
Despite this, the tables of this company have more advantages, which is why they are so popular in our country. In addition, they are easy to fit into any interior.
