How to repair a hole in a drywall on a wall?
Almost no modern renovation is complete without the use of drywall. This material is quite affordable, lightweight, easy to install, but, unfortunately, very fragile. If a hole appears in the wall during or after repairs, then don't worry. You can close a hole in a drywall wall, the main thing is to know how to do it correctly.
Preparatory stage
It is not necessary to have professional skills to repair a hole in drywall. Before starting any business, especially when it comes to repairs, you need to prepare as thoroughly as possible for the process. Good preparation is half the battle.
Typically, a hole that suddenly forms in a wall requires some trimming and processing. This can be done using the most ordinary knife, which is intended for construction work, or you can safely use a hacksaw. When choosing a hacksaw as a tool, we recommend taking a tool with fine teeth. This is usually a hacksaw for metal. The smaller the teeth, the easier it will be to make the correct saw cut, the edges of which will not have to be cleaned for a long time.
After the cutting process, the edges require processing. This can be done with the same construction knife. You can also use a file that is designed for rough processing. Small files are fine too, but remember that they will quickly become clogged with drywall dust and will be uncomfortable to work. Alternatively, you can use sandpaper.
Having completed the preparatory stage, namely, having prepared the hole itself for sealing, you need to decide what exactly you will be patching the hole with. A piece of drywall is ideal. By the way, after the repair, it is advisable not to throw away the leftovers and scraps. As you can see, they may well come in handy.
In addition, for subsequent repairs, namely for repairing damage, you will need the following items: a simple pencil, a ruler, a construction knife, a spatula, sandpaper, slats, screws, putty and drywall itself.
How to deal with damage?
Below are a few ways to help repair damaged drywall coverings. You will be able to choose the appropriate method yourself, since a lot depends on the size of the damage in the plasterboard structure.
Small defect
If a small hole with a diameter of no more than three centimeters has formed, then it can be easily patched with a putty. Of course, you need a putty that is designed to work with drywall.
When you dilute the putty, be sure to read the instructions on the package so that all proportions are observed. As a rule, the dry mixture must be added to the prepared water, so it will be possible to achieve the ideal consistency, which resembles thick sour cream.
On the prepared hole, you need to glue the so-called serpyanka. Then a neat layer of putty is applied on top and everything is left to dry completely. The layer should be thin, since the procedure will have to be repeated three times in order for the whole structure to hold well.
After you fill the hole with several layers of putty, and it is completely dry, the surface must be sanded so that there are no irregularities. This can be done using sandpaper. Then you can paint the surface or wallpaper it.
It happens that small cracks form on the surface, which can then interfere with the overall finish. It is very easy to get rid of them. If the crack is small, then you will have to deepen it a little, and then cover it with putty, which we talked about above. After drying, do not forget about sanding.
In the event that a small chip has formed on the surface of the drywall, the situation can be corrected with the help of plaster tape. Clean up the damage in advance, apply tape, and go over the top with putty.
Big hole
In the event that an impressive size damage has formed in the wall, the diameter of which is about eight centimeters or more, the above method will not work. A patch is required to fix this problem.
- Before you start making the patch itself, you need to prepare a hole. That is, cut it, giving it an even rectangle shape. From all sides of the prepared hole, you need to remove two centimeters of cardboard. This is necessary so that later the patch fits as tightly as possible and there is no strong deformation of the wall, bulges.
- Then the hole must be measured, after which all dimensions must be transferred to a piece of drywall prepared in advance. Measure correctly, double-check and only then cut out the patch. It is important to remember that the patch itself must be at least five centimeters larger than the hole.
- After carefully cutting out the patch, sand the edges as described above. Next, it needs to be cut from the back so that everything is cut to the very plaster. And from the front, only a layer of the cardboard itself should remain.
- Inside the hole prepared in the wall, you need to attach two small wooden blocks. The bars must be fastened in such a way that their edges are not visible from the hole itself. That is, they need to be fastened from the edge of the hole two or three centimeters to the side. The bars should be fastened with self-tapping screws. The bars should be located at the top and bottom, not on the sides.
- Further, a layer of putty should be applied to the prepared patch and pressed to the surface. The next stage can be conditionally called "disguise". In order to properly mask the patch, you need to process all joints with self-adhesive tape. Then apply another thin layer of putty on the patch itself. After waiting for complete drying, all the irregularities must be treated with sandpaper.
- You can also fix the patch with plaster, which should be applied to the edges of the prepared part. There is also another option, when the patch is screwed with a drill to the installed bars.
- After the hole is repaired, you can do the final finishing, namely: cover the wall with plaster on top, paint the walls or glue the wallpaper.
Tips & Tricks
If repair work is ahead, then our advice and recommendations will definitely come in handy:
- In order to cut an even piece of drywall, for example, for a patch, you first need to make even and deep cuts on the cardboard on both sides. After that, you just have to press and break the plaster part.
- The patch can be of any shape: square, triangle or circle. The main thing is to remember that it should be easy to use and not create unnecessary problems.
- Be sure to use stainless steel screws, otherwise, over time, rust spots may appear on the surface, which will spoil the overall appearance of the wall.
- You can fix the patch not only with self-tapping screws, but also with the help of special glue.
- If there are no wooden blocks in the house, then they can be replaced with plastic products, which can be fixed with glue.
- If damage of more than forty centimeters has formed in the wall, then a whole sheet of drywall will have to be replaced. Unfortunately, in the event of serious damage, no patches will help the situation.
- After the patch is installed in the wall, you should not paint only this newly repaired area, since the fresh paint will stand out strongly against the general background. In addition, it is very difficult to find the right shade.
- The solution, namely the putty, must be prepared correctly. Be sure to mix the mortar with a drill to achieve a uniform consistency without any lumps.
- If the renovation takes place in the bathroom, then it is imperative to use all materials, including mixtures that are suitable for working in a room with high humidity.
- If a small hole on the wall has formed exactly in the place where you have long dreamed of hanging a picture or a family photo, then it is not at all necessary to close it up. Your favorite painting will help mask the hole in the wall and will delight you with its appearance.
