Varieties of working gloves and tips for choosing them
A large number of working professions are not complete without the use of special gloves. Even in a domestic environment, situations may arise that require hand protection, such as repairs, pruning roses in the garden, or weed control. What are the mittens and when they are used, we will tell in our article.

There are infinitely many working professions, each of them requires its own specific protection - from current, chemical burns, mechanical damage.
The intended purpose of the mittens is not the same, therefore, the material for their production is different.
Cotton
Cotton fiber mittens can be called versatile. They are hypoallergenic, breathable and comfortable to be in. Products protect from cold, dust and dirt. Cotton gloves are used in many cases that do not require an increased level of protection:
- in the construction industry;
- for carpentry work;
- during loading and unloading operations;
- for the repair of equipment;
- during installation work;
- in gardening;
- in animal husbandry;
- performing locksmith work;
- in a domestic environment.
To increase the protective properties of cotton gloves, they are made with a double handheld, reinforcing cotton with leather inserts, tarpaulins, and rubberized fragments. Such products are called combined, they resist slipping and can protect your hands from many negative factors.
Tarpaulin (galitsa)
Galitsa in the old days was made of thick leather without lining, the people called them "hedgehog mittens". Today, this is the name for double-fingered cotton products with tarpaulin inserts. But most often they are made entirely of tarpaulin. Tarpaulin is a strong and tough fabric that can protect your hands from friction and other mechanical stress. Special agents in the form of impregnations help the material acquire water-repellent and fire-resistant characteristics.
The protective properties of tarpaulin products are higher than those of cotton. They are not afraid of barbed wire, thorns of garden plants, sparks from welding, metal shavings, they do not get wet, they can withstand the high temperature of heated parts. Gloves are produced from a uniform canvas fabric or reinforced with overlays, making them even more resistant to aggressive manifestations of the external environment.
The high wear resistance of the fabric allows the products to serve for many years.
Insulated
They belong to the winter version of special technical gloves, they are used in frosty conditions during the outdoor work process. The outer side of the product is made of cotton or tarpaulin of different thicknesses. These types of fabrics have good wear resistance and strength. Batting, artificial fur or natural sheepskin are used as insulation. The choice of fur layer affects the cost of the model.
Cloth
Mittens are made of coarse overcoat cloth, which is a durable woolen or semi-woolen fabric with a smooth pile. Thanks to natural fibers, they are comfortable to work in, good air circulation does not allow your hands to sweat. Strong products with low thermal conductivity are used in high temperature conditions - in forges, metallurgical plants, bakeries. They protect the skin from scalding from hot splashes or baking sheets. It is comfortable to work in woolen mittens in frost, they protect hands from abrasion and other mechanical influences. Cloth mittens are used in the following areas of activity:
- in the work of a welder;
- metallurgical industry;
- construction, especially in the northern regions;
- agricultural needs;
- loading and unloading operations in winter;
- in the housing and communal sector.
When choosing cloth mittens, different options should be considered. Products are divided not only by the density of the fabric, but also by the composition of the impregnation. Models for more gentle working conditions can also go without impregnation.
Oil and frost resistant (NMS)
Gloves are made from PVC fabric or nitrile latex. They contain heat-saving liners, which make it possible to work in outdoor conditions at temperatures up to minus 45 degrees, without losing their strong and plastic properties. The products are adapted to work with oil, gasoline, oils, 20% acid-base medium.
Rubber fabric
They are made by applying a rubber film (synthetic latex) to a fabric base. The basic material can be:
- cotton fabric;
- mottled cloth;
- rough cloth with fleece.
Rubber gloves protect the skin when working with dyes, as well as with salts, alkalis and acids of an average percentage.
Gauntlets-leggings
Leggings are mittens with sockets up to the elbow. They are made from any technical material and help people of different professions.
Materials (edit)
To create special technical fabrics, not only the textile industry works, but also the chemical industry, giving them special protective properties.
To save hands from many aggressive manifestations, work gloves are made from the following reliable materials.
Arselon
Heat-resistant polymer fiber obtained by twill weaving is a product of Russian inventors in the 70s of the last century. Arselon gloves have unique performance properties.
Asbestos cloth
The fibrous mineral chrysotile asbestos and cotton or polyester threads are used to create asbestos fabric. The material acquires incredibly durable characteristics and is used for workwear.
The mittens are able to protect hands from stress and strong friction and hardly wear out.
Silicone rubber
A unique elastic heat-resistant material used for work in hot workshops or in severe frost conditions. The fabric is considered fireproof, as it can withstand temperatures up to 300 degrees. In winter conditions, silicone gloves can be used at temperatures of minus 60 degrees.
Selection criteria
For each type of work, special gloves are selected. When buying products, we already have an idea of what we need them for: for work with electricity, we need rubber ones, it is better to buy cloth or insulated outside in frosty weather, for household use, cotton with or without reinforced inserts may be suitable.
In any case, the goods should be inspected:
- the rubber layer should not be broken;
- the product is selected stitched with coarse threads that do not creep out during frequent washings;
- the fabric should be dense, hypoallergenic, without harmful substances in the composition;
- if you do not have to work in an aggressive environment, it is better to choose gloves that allow air to pass through;
- well-proven products with spraying, allowing to improve adhesion.
The main thing in choosing gloves is their final result; they must protect hands from injuries and burns.
