Split systems 12: what are the characteristics and for what area are they designed?
The energy efficiency of air conditioners depends on several factors, the most important of which are the power consumption and the cooling capacity. The latter is expressed in British thermal units - BTU. Its value corresponds to a special index that is assigned to each model. Here we are considering 12 air conditioner models.
Peculiarities
Air conditioner models have indexes 7, 9, 12, 18, 24. This means 7000 BTU, 9000 BTU and so on. The models with lower indexes are the most popular, as they are the best in terms of economy and efficiency.
Here we are looking at a 12 split system that has a cooling capacity of 12,000 BTU. When buying these air conditioners, it is recommended to give preference to the models, the power consumption of which is about 1 kW, because they are the most energy efficient.
These air conditioners are in demand because they are well suited for a home with an average size of 35-50 square meters.
Advantages and disadvantages
One of the main advantages of air conditioner 12 is precisely its high level of cooling capacity, which is enough for several rooms. When buying a 7 or 9 air conditioner, you would have to purchase several split systems for each room or a multi-split system (in which the air conditioner unit includes several indoor units).
At the same time, these split systems have a fairly compact size - about 50x70 cm, which saves space in the house, and a weight of about 30 kg in the wall version.
Although 12 air conditioners are in the category with an average unit capacity, which is enough for a number of squares close to the area of a regular three-room apartment, they are not always well suited for working in a divided space.
It means that in different rooms during the operation of the air conditioner, the temperature may differ... In the room where the air conditioner is installed, it will strictly correspond to the value set in its settings, and in others it may be higher if the air conditioner is working for cooling, or lower when heating mode.
Therefore, one air conditioner of lower power is often placed in different rooms.
But you can save a lot if there is always communication between rooms and air circulates freely... Then one air conditioner 12 will really be enough for an apartment up to 50 sq. m.
The disadvantages include the fact that not all 12 models are energy efficient by modern standards. When buying an air conditioner, always find out in advance how much it consumes a kilowatt.
To correctly estimate its power consumption, you just need to divide the power value in BTU - 12,000 - by the power consumption in kilowatts. You will get a value called the EER rating. It must be at least 10.
Specifications
Split systems 12 use modern types of refrigerants (freon R22, R407C, R410A, depending on the model). This type of split system is designed for standard input voltage. It works stably in the range of 200-240 volts. If you have voltage drops in your apartment, you may need a stabilizer for reliable operation of the split system.
Although the technical documentation indicates that the air conditioner of the 12th model can successfully cool the air in an apartment with an area of 35-50 m, this requires certain clarifications. For example, it should be a communicating space. Besides, the volume of the room plays an important role.
If you are going to purchase an air conditioning system for several separate rooms or this is a hall with high ceilings, it may be worth thinking about several air conditioners, for example, the 9th model, or a more powerful split system (16 or 24).
Operating tips
If you are installing an air conditioner of the 12th model, it is worth making sure that the power of the network matches this device. Split systems 12 are quite a serious consumer. It may require a minimum of 1 to 3.5 kW in the network.
Before choosing such an air conditioner, calculate the total load on your home network. (in combination with other electrical appliances) and make a conclusion about whether it will withstand the connection of the split system. This depends primarily on the cross-section of the wire in the network and the current strength for which the installed fuses are designed.
Finally, it is worth remembering that the efficiency of cooling or heating air in an apartment depends not only on the power class of the air conditioner. This is influenced by the model and speed of its compressor, whether it has a turbo mode, or even the diameter of the tube connecting the outdoor unit and the indoor unit - freon circulates through these tubes.
There is a methodology for a more accurate selection of a split system according to the conditions of a particular room. Take note of the following options:
- area of the room;
- the height of its walls (manufacturers of air conditioners, when specifying the area, mean the standard height of the walls in the premises of 2.8 m);
- the number of heat-generating devices in the house;
- energy efficiency of the building itself.
Energy efficiency of a building refers to how well it retains heat in winter and coolness in summer. It depends on the material of the walls: buildings made of foam concrete and gas silicate materials, wood are considered the most energy efficient; traditional urban buildings made of concrete are somewhat inferior to them.
It is worth choosing an air conditioner with a small margin of performance so that it will suffice during the peak of the summer heat. Besides, there is one caveat - classic split systems provide efficient operation at temperatures up to +43 degrees, and in Russia in the summer, sometimes in some regions it is +50 degrees.
So it makes sense to think about purchasing an inverter, especially if the apartment is located on the sunny side of the house, although inverter air conditioners are slightly more expensive.
Taking all these factors into account, it can be said that the split system 12 is suitable for most medium to large rooms and is capable of providing efficient air conditioning in them.
