How to properly water spathiphyllum ("female happiness")?
Spathiphyllum must be looked after in a certain way and know the peculiarities of watering. If you provide for all these nuances of care, then it will constantly bloom and delight you with its healthy shiny foliage. The peculiarity of this flower is that it does not have a dormant period. So in winter and summer, “women's happiness” needs to be equally carefully looked after and watered.
How often should you water?
The main thing is to observe 2 most important and prerequisites for the healthy growth of spathiphyllum: a certain frequency of watering and timely spraying. Under natural conditions, spathiphyllum grows in the shade under trees and closer to water bodies. Therefore, it is easy to conclude that for the healthy growth of this flower, it is necessary to create conditions that are as close to natural as possible. This means that year-round high humidity is very important. This requires spathiphyllum to be sprayed at least once a week throughout the year.
In some apartments, where the air is particularly dry, you can keep the plant in a tray with pebbles and water, or install a humidifier next door. It is necessary to spray the flower actively in winter, when heating batteries work at full capacity in our apartments.
Be careful, spraying during flowering should be gentle, without water getting into the spathiphyllum inflorescence itself.
Only one thing can be said for sure about the frequency of watering - at least once a week in winter, or even better twice, it is imperative to thoroughly shed the "female happiness". In summer, the frequency of watering can be up to 1 time in 3 days. Of course, it is important to adhere to these recommendations, but do not overdo it so as not to flood the flower. Wait until the top layer of the earth is dry.
How often to water spathiphyllum is a rather individual question. In each case, the conditions will be different. All experienced flower growers claim that you can and should look closely at any plant and adapt to watering. How to determine that it is definitely time to water the flower, we will tell you below.
Depending on the seasons
In the summer heat, it is necessary to moisturize the spathiphyllum more intensively and more abundantly. During unstable temperatures (spring and fall), it is best to rely on the current weather and adjust the soil moisture in the pot depending on the weather conditions. In winter, the intensity of moisture, respectively, decreases.
It is important to know that in winter, caring for spathiphyllum becomes, in principle, more problematic and requires special attention. In winter, there really is a risk of overflowing the flower.
This can happen if the plant is standing on a cold windowsill, while its roots are cooled and become less susceptible to moisture. As a result, they will absorb less and may even rot. And, of course, such a painful condition of the flower will immediately affect its appearance.
In winter, watering spathiphyllum is required only when the topsoil dries up. It is not difficult to check this, just run your finger to the depth of one phalanx into the soil. If you feel that there is no moisture, then it's time to water. In the summer, in the heat, we often spray the flower with a moisturizer and water it, of course, much bolder, more intensively and more abundantly.
How to irrigate a flower?
Spathiphyllum should be sprayed more often, he loves it.In the summer, for example, your frequent presence at a flower with a spray bottle may be required. 2-3 times a day is ideal. And the quality of water is important for "female happiness". It should be soft, filtered or settled for 2-3 days, some even pour mineral water without gas. It is best if the water is slightly warmer than room temperature.
It is advisable to irrigate the flower with some kind of fertilizer once a month. For example, you can spray it with succinic acid. The flower feels great from this preparation. Its growth is activated, and the leaves become regular oval, beautiful and rich in color, smooth and shiny in texture. It is good to use succinic acid from the beginning of spring to July with a frequency of 2 times a month.
Also, if necessary, gardeners add Epin or Zircon to irrigation water. In order not to harm the flower, it is better to limit feeding between November and February.
When flowering, the plant also does not need fertilizers, it is better to add them immediately after, as well as during periods of maximum active growth, that is, from March to early September.
Watering methods and rules
The rules for watering spathiphyllum are reduced to one main thing - you need to water this flower as needed. In this case, the soil in the pot should remain slightly damp. If "women's happiness" lacks moisture, you may notice a little drooping leaves. If spathiphyllum sadly "lowered its ears", then it's time to water it. It is also useful for this plant to wipe the leaves with a wet sponge, preferably every day, and once a month send them to the bathroom for a warm shower.
For those who have recently developed spathiphyllum, root watering is the best way to water it. In a similar way, it is easier to control the amount of moisture entering the plant. It is believed that if after watering about 7 minutes have passed, and a little moisture has appeared at the bottom of the pot, it means that the watering was quite abundant.
Watering must be done correctly: gently, evenly and in a circle so as not to create pits and expose the root system of the plant. For watering at home, a small watering can with a rather narrow long spout and small holes at the end is best suited.
If you have to leave the spathiphyllum for a long time alone, then you should take care of the timely moistening of the earth. It happens that there is no way to leave your flower to a responsible neighbor or knowledgeable people. In this case, the purchase of a special irrigation system for the soil will help. An easier and more affordable way is to pre-abundant watering and place the flowerpot in a deep pan of water.
Possible errors and their consequences
Spathiphyllum, like any other flower, has its own status alarm system. If something goes wrong, you can always at least roughly determine the cause by looking at the leaves of the plant. Of course, there are quite a lot of reasons for feeling unwell in “female happiness”. Starting from parasites, improper location, insufficient water temperature and air humidity, ending with the wrong intensity of watering. Improper watering will definitely show one of these problems.
The tips or edges of the leaves are dried. This means that the spathiphyllum lacks water or air humidity. It also happens that the water is too hard. Try to gradually increase the amount of water while watering and spray the plant more often. And remember to use soft water when doing this. Another recommendation to increase the moisture around the plant is to cover the pot with damp moss.
- Leaves turn black, brown spots appear on them. This is a sure sign that the root system of the flower is flooded or the plant is frozen. If you took care that cold and drafts did not get to the spathiphyllum, then the matter is definitely in the process of rotting in the roots. It is necessary to immediately stop the existing rate of watering and save the plant. When pouring spathiphyllum, it is highly desirable to transplant it into a new soil, to give a sufficient amount of light. The first time after transplantation, feed with "Epin" and "Zircon", these drugs increase immunity and promote the active development of roots.
- Dropped or "lying" leaves. Spathiphyllum lacks water, so abundant watering or a good shower will be enough. By the way, if the plant is blooming, the shower must be watered very, very carefully so as not to wet the flower itself.
Care advice
In order for the spathiphyllum to grow and bloom well, it needs some tightness in the pot. Therefore, it is recommended to purchase a narrower and taller pot for this flower. The bottom of the pot is best laid out with pebbles or expanded clay, this helps to remove excess moisture and saves the roots from rotting. Also, a plastic pot is more suitable for spathiphyllum, since moisture evaporates from ceramic faster.
Best of all, "female happiness" feels in a moisture-consuming and nutritious soil, not compacted and "with air."
It is useful to loosen the soil in the pot after abundant watering, but only after the moisture is completely absorbed into the soil and even dries out a little. You can also make sure that the soil is as suitable as possible to retain moisture. To do this, add such a useful substance as vermiculite to the pot. Its proportions to the ground can be different and even reach 50%. Vermiculite will allow the soil to be better aerated and retain moisture, will also protect the roots from treacherous temperature changes, reduce the acidity of the earth and prevent salinization.
And finally, we recall once again: spathiphyllum should never be poured with water, as it is contraindicated to keep it in dry soil for a long time. No one can learn to water correctly right away, so just be attentive to the flower. Spathiphyllum itself will show you with its appearance, how it feels and what it lacks.
