A type of fruit shrub, black currant should be cultivated in every garden, since the berry is a natural storehouse of trace elements and vitamins. Black currant exists in many varieties and hybrids, which allows growing and obtaining full-fledged harvests in almost all regions of Russia, except for the Far North. Currants are grown even in Yakutia.
The Orlovskaya Serenada variety is special in its own way - it is suitable for processing with specialized equipment. It is this fact that allows its cultivation on an industrial scale. Orlovskaya is characterized by universal use - the berry is good both fresh and canned. Various jams are made from it, fresh currants, grated with sugar (without cooking), are especially tasty. The fruits can be dried, despite their juiciness, deep-frozen, and in winter they can be brewed or added to compote.
Breeding history
The originators of the variety are L. V. Bayanova, T. P. Ogoltsova, S. D. Knyazev, breeders of the Federal State Budgetary Scientific Institution All-Russian Research Institute of Breeding of Fruit Crops. The Oryol Serenade appeared as a result of crossing Ershistaya and Minai Shmyrev. It was registered in the State Register of the Russian Federation in 2000.
Description of the variety
Medium-sized bushes have a slightly spreading shape and not too dense thickening. Young shoots of medium thickness have a shiny smooth surface and a neutral color. Lignified branches of past years are covered with gray-brown bark with internodes of average length, covered with green leaves. The sheet plate has a slightly corrugated shiny surface and a standard cut along the edges, decorated with small denticles. Bright yellow flowers are collected in short, slightly sinuous, loose clusters of green color, on each of which 5-6 ovaries are formed.
Characteristics of berries
Black, as if lacquered, round-oval berry weighing 1.9 g is covered with elastic dense skin.
The taste is sweet, with a moderate amount of acid, the aroma of berries is traditional - currant. The separation of the berries is dry, the tasting score is 4.5 points out of 5 possible.
Taste qualities
The berry is distinguished by its rich vitamin and mineral composition, saturated with microelements:
sugar - 8.4%;
catechins - 300.0 mg / 100 g;
anthocyanins - 97.6 mg / 100 g;
titratable acidity - 3.0%;
leukoanthocyanins - 295.7 mg / 100 g;
soluble solids - 12.8%;
ascorbic acid - 217.1 mg / 100 g;
the amount of P-active substances - 693.4 mg / 100 g and others.
The berry has a pleasant sweet and sour taste and a delicate currant aroma.
Ripening and fruiting
The variety belongs to the mid-ripening category - the harvest is harvested in the second half of July or at the end of the month, and it is fast-growing, since the first berries can be seen in the year of planting, especially if the bush is planted in spring. Fruiting is stretched, which allows you to make harvesting without haste.
Yield
Oryol Serenade is distinguished by average yield indicators - up to 1.1 kg of tasty and aromatic berries are harvested from 1 bush, from 1 hectare to 8.7 tons.
Growing regions
The variety is adapted for cultivation in the Central Black Earth Region, as well as in the Central, Volgo-Vyatka and Middle Volga regions.
Self-fertility and the need for pollinators
Orlovskaya serenade belongs to self-fertile varieties - the self-pollination rate is 68%.
Landing
The variety prefers fertile sandy loam soils in areas with constant lighting. The weight and sweetness of the berry depends on the level of light. In addition, when choosing a site, you should pay attention to the proximity of the groundwater - the roots do not tolerate swampiness and stagnant moisture. The level of acidity is no less important - its indicators should be close to neutral value. Increased acidity must be neutralized with chalk, lime, dolomite flour, wood ash or gypsum. The optimal distance between roots is up to 1.5 meters and up to two meters in row spacing. Planting time is mid-spring and autumn. If the planting of a seedling takes place in the fall, then they do it after the end of the leaf fall. Planting in spring involves March or April, depending on the condition of the soil, but in any case, you need to have time to do this before bud break.
The dimensions of the planting pit should be at least 70x70x70 cm, it is possible to increase a little - the greater the mass of the earth is enriched with organic matter and fertilizers, the longer the bush will not need additional nutrients. At the bottom of the pit, drainage is organized, the excavated soil is enriched with humus or compost, wood ash, nitroammophos.
Growing and caring
Further care consists in timely watering, weeding, loosening, sanitary pruning and treatments from pests and diseases, the introduction of additional nutrients. During hot and dry periods, additional irrigation will be required. The standard amount of water is 3 buckets per 1 bush once a week.
The formation of the crown will help to avoid thickening, will provide high-quality ventilation in the middle of the bush. For this, old, fattening shoots are removed. Sanitary pruning in spring and autumn will relieve shrubs from diseased, damaged shoots, dry or frozen. Water the shrub abundantly in the fall to help the plant overwinter. A thick layer of mulch from rotted manure and compost is poured under the bush. In spring, when snow or rains melt, nutrients from the mulch penetrate the ground, stimulating the growth and development of currants.
Disease and pest resistance
The variety perfectly resists the defeat of the kidney mite, powdery mildew, as well as fungal and bacterial diseases. It is moderately susceptible to diseases such as glass, septoria, anthracnose. To avoid damage to bushes and crops, preventive treatments with insecticides and fungicides should be carried out.
Currant is one of the most favorite crops of gardeners, it can be found on almost any personal plot. In order for the currant berries to be tasty and large, and the bush itself to be healthy and strong, you should properly care for, treat and protect the plant from harmful insects. It is important to recognize the signs of the disease in a timely manner and begin treatment in the early stages of plant damage.
Resistance to adverse climatic conditions
Currant is distinguished by good drought resistance and winter hardiness in the regions for which it is adapted, but the indicators noticeably decrease closer to the northern regions.
