Black currant in cultivation is considered an unpretentious crop. However, it is rather difficult to cultivate it in some regions of Russia because of the harsh winters and severe frosts. Thanks to the work of domestic breeders, the Ordinary Miracle variety was bred, characterized by increased frost resistance, while giving large berries and a bountiful harvest.
Description of the variety
The bushes are vigorous, reaching a height of 2 m. They are slightly spreading, with straight branches. The culture has well-developed roots that grow in depth and breadth. The shoots are strong and strong, yellow and gray in color, with age they become bright green on the outside and white on the inside.
Leaves are bright green in color, with a smooth and shiny surface on the front side. On the reverse side - a rough plate with veins. White-yellow peduncles are collected in a brush of 13 pcs. The length of the fruit cluster reaches 11 cm, each of which forms 12 berries.
Among the advantages:
- high productivity;
- unpretentious care;
- long fruiting period;
- frost resistance and drought resistance;
- large-fruited.
Among the disadvantages are the cracking of fruits when they are overripe and poor resistance to most diseases and pests.
Characteristics of berries
The berries are black and very large. The weight of one varies from 1.5 to 2 g. Their shape is round. The skin is dense, elastic, with a glossy sheen. When ripe, the berries do not crumble. Removal dry. They tolerate transportation well without losing their taste.
Taste qualities
An ordinary miracle has a different name - Sugar, and it corresponds to reality. Sourness predominates in the taste of most of the varieties, this variety is sweet, with a sugar aftertaste. The aroma is pronounced. The pulp is firm and juicy.
The culture is famous for its large amount of vitamins and minerals. By adding a berry to the diet, the work of the cardiovascular, nervous and digestive systems is normalized.
Berries can be frozen, dried, ground with sugar, or simply consumed fresh. They make delicious jams, preserves, compotes, jelly, yoghurts, wines, liqueurs and much more.
Ripening and fruiting
An ordinary miracle belongs to the mid-late varieties. The fruits ripen in July together. The bush begins to bear fruit in the second year of planting.
Yield
The plant is high-yielding. From one bush, you can collect from 10 to 12 kg of fruit.
Growing regions
It is successful to cultivate the culture in the northern regions and in central Russia. However, it is suitable for growing in all areas.
Self-fertility and the need for pollinators
Self-pollination in the variety is below average, it is only 40%. Therefore, to get a good harvest, several currant bushes should be planted nearby.
Landing
Bushes can be planted in spring and autumn. The best time for planting is the end of September. Before the onset of frost, the seedlings will have time to take root and successfully overwinter.Spring planting is also practiced, which is started before the buds begin to swell.
The choice of seedlings must be approached carefully, since the quality of the planting material determines what the plant will be, how it will take root and what the future harvest will be. The optimal height of the bush should be 40-100 cm.
The roots should be light brown, with the obligatory presence of a central root and a large number of small roots. On the shoots and roots there should be no signs of diseases, spots, dried parts.
In order for the plant to feel comfortable in a new site, you need to carefully choose a planting site. The main thing is to follow some rules:
- the site should be located on a small hill - the currant does not tolerate the close occurrence of groundwater;
- bushes must be protected from strong winds and drafts, it is better to plant them near fences or other structures;
- photophilous culture - only with good lighting the yield indicators are maximum;
- the soil must be enriched with nutrients.
Before proceeding with planting a seedling, it is first soaked in a disinfecting solution, and then in a root formation stimulator. Bushes are planted according to the 2x2 m scheme. Observance of such a distance will allow the plants not to thicken each other.
First, the site is pre-prepared. It is carefully dug up, weeds, roots are removed, while organic and mineral fertilizers are applied. The planting hole is dug 50x50 cm in size.First of all, the volume of the root system is taken into account.
Drainage, compost with wood ash and garden soil are added to the hole, watered abundantly. A seedling is placed in the middle, the roots are carefully straightened, sprinkled with earth, tamped and well watered again. The final layer is peat, foliage and straw mulch.
Growing and care
To get a good harvest and healthy bushes, the plant needs to be looked after. Currants are demanding for watering, subcrusting and pruning. Irrigation depends on regional climatic characteristics. In the northern regions, it is watered once every 3 weeks, in the southern regions and the middle lane - once every 2 weeks. However, if there is a prolonged drought, watering should be increased.
After each irrigation, the soil is loosened to improve air exchange and the penetration of nutrients to the roots. Weeds are regularly weeded.
Fertilizers are applied 3 times per season. In the spring, when the snow melts and the buds begin to swell, nitrogen is introduced into the soil, allowing it to gain green mass. At the beginning of summer, you need to feed with compost, which improves the taste of berries. At the beginning of autumn, the soil is enriched with superphosphates so that the plants can successfully endure frosts.
The main pruning is done in the fall, after harvest. Sick, dry, fertile twigs, as well as small shoots are subject to removal. Shoots can be shortened to 5 buds to form a crown.
The variety belongs to winter-hardy crops, is able to withstand frosts up to 40 degrees. Therefore, the plant does not need special preparation for winter. It will be enough to lay a layer of mulch of 30-40 cm. If the currants are cultivated in regions with a more severe climate, then the bushes should be covered with agrofibre.
Currant is one of the most favorite crops of gardeners, it can be found on almost any personal plot. In order for the currant berries to be tasty and large, and the bush itself to be healthy and strong, you should properly care for, treat and protect the plant from harmful insects. It is important to recognize the signs of the disease in a timely manner and begin treatment in the early stages of plant damage.
