The invasion of slugs on a summer cottage is fraught with big problems. They can destroy a significant portion of the crop. To combat these slow and slimy creatures, various means are used, including special traps.

Well-proven chemicals have a significant drawback - they can harm pets and birds that feed on snails. Traps are much safer and you can make your own.

Natural control

The Natural Control traps have proven themselves well in the fight against slugs. They are buried in the garden and lure the pests directly into the water. Deliveries are made directly with the bait, which is created according to a special formula that acts on all types of parasites. Mixing with water inside the device, the bait lures snails, as a result they drown. The bait can be replaced if necessary.

How to do it yourself

Devices for catching and destroying slugs can not only be purchased in the store, but also made with your own hands, for example, from a plastic bottle.

Tools and materials

To catch pests you will need:

  • plastic bottle with a volume of 2 liters;
  • scissors;
  • beer.

Manufacturing technology

The bottom line is to put a small amount of yeast-based alcohol in the garden. The slug bar should be covered with a lid to protect it from precipitation. Slugs like the scent of yeast and, being trapped, they drown or die from alcohol intoxication. Every day more and more alcoholic snails will accumulate in the trap. As it is filled with pests, it is cleaned and filled with new bait.

The easiest way to make slimy parasite traps is from a regular 2 liter plastic bottle.

  1. Take a container and cut 2 square pockets in it in the shape of the letter "P". They should be located opposite each other.
  2. Bend the pieces of plastic down to create the slides. This will make it easier for the slugs to get inside the trap.
  3. Place the bottle on a slight rise, dusting the edges of the steps with earth. The entrance must remain open.
  4. Fill the bottle with beer and the bar is ready.

Do not fill the container to the brim, the slugs should die in the water, and not swim out through the entrance.

Check the trap periodically, see how many pests have accumulated in it. Remove trapped slugs and add alcohol as needed.

Avoid placing the trap where there is maximum slug infestation. Be careful. Attracted by the beer aroma, snails will begin to make their way from the entire site directly to the "tavern". And along the way, they will come across lush vegetation, which needs protection. The pests will get everything at once - both a drink and a snack.

But the goal is to scare away slugs from the places where they can do the most damage, to reduce the total number of pests in the garden. Set up traps away from valuable plants. Let there be tough vegetation nearby, which is too tough for pests.

It is better to use an inexpensive beer drink. Sour leftovers or dough cooked with yeast, in a small amount, will do. It doesn't hurt to add a little honey to the alcohol to enhance fermentation and flavor. But this is optional.

Remember, the challenge is not to please the pests with elite alcohol, but to create a seductive yeast aroma that will attract slugs from all over the garden.

If beer drink and dough are not available, mix 0.5 teaspoon of granulated sugar with flour. Add half a teaspoon of simple yeast to these. All components must be dissolved in a glass of water. Slugs will like this bait as much as beer. But sometimes the lack of alcohol slightly reduces efficiency.

A homemade slug trap can also be made from watermelon rinds. Slugs have an excellent sense of smell. They can pick up an attractive scent from a long distance. If the food is dark and damp, they stay there until the food runs out.

To make such a trap, you need half a watermelon without pulp. You need to make 3 to 4 holes in the peel. When dusk comes, place the watermelon upside down in your garden. In the morning, there will be several dozen slugs in the trap. The watermelon trap can be used several nights in a row.

How to use it correctly

One of the main advantages of slug traps is ease of use.

  • Make a small hole in the soil and place a store-bought or homemade pest catch tool in the soil. Place the trap at the same level with the ground so that pests have no difficulty getting inside.
  • In order not to harm the crop, place baits away from beds with slug-attracting plants... On the way to the trap, pests should not be tempted to profit from something else, exclude alternative delicacies in the form of vegetables and berries grown in the garden.

Self-made and store traps make it possible to destroy slimy "criminals" that flooded the site, without environmental risks. With such devices, slugs do not have to be collected by hand.
