Plum home Hungarian Moskovskaya is one of the oldest and favorite varieties among summer residents. It gives off the harvest later than others, the fruits are well stored, contain many vitamins. In terms of the totality of qualities, it continues to hold high positions even in comparison with newer and more promising varieties, sometimes referred to as Hungarian Gypsy.
Breeding history
The variety has been known since 1947. The excretion was carried out by specialists of the FGBNU VSTISP. Presumably, the new subspecies was obtained by free pollination of the domestic Hungarian.
Description of the variety
The tree is medium-sized, up to 3 m, with a dense and spreading crown of a round-spherical shape. Abundantly forms basal shoots, quickly gains height. Branches drooping to the ground. Shoots are straight, with a reddish bark. The leaves are elongated, green.
Fruiting in this variety occurs mainly on bouquet branches, as well as on a one-year growth. Plum blooms in late May or 1st decade of June.
Fruit characteristics
Plums of this variety are small, each weighing about 20 g. Fruits are round-oval in shape, there are also ovoid specimens, with a pronounced abdominal suture, asymmetric. The color of the skin is saturated, dark purple-red, there is a waxy coating on top, the shell itself is rough. The pulp is amber-yellow inside, with a medium-sized bone that easily separates from the rest of the fruit.
Taste qualities
Fresh fruits of the Hungarian Moskovskaya are not very appreciated because of their mediocre sweet and sour taste. At the same time, they have a very dense juicy pulp, which is well suited for processing. In compotes and canned whole fruits, this plum is quite good.
Ripening and fruiting
The trees bear fruit annually from the age of 7-8 years. In terms of ripening time, this plum is considered late. Fruits are harvested from the 2nd half of September, immature ones grow well during storage.
Yield
Above average. 25-30 kg of fruits are harvested from the tree per season.
Growing regions
The variety is zoned for the Central region of the Russian Federation.
Self-fertility and the need for pollinators
The variety is highly self-fertile. It does not need additional pollination, but it itself can act in this capacity for other plums. It is possible to improve the yield and taste of the fruits by joint planting in the same territory with the Red Skorospelka.
Growing and care
This variety of plums is very fond of planting in warm, well-warmed soil, does not feel good in lowlands and in swampy areas. It is better not to place the Moscow Hungarian on sandy soil or very dense alumina. The soil should be moderately loose, moisture-permeable, abundantly fertilized.Without enough sun, you can't expect abundant fruiting either.
The best time to plant this variety is in spring. But the pit must be prepared in the fall or at least 2-3 weeks before the transfer of the plant, with the removal of the fertile layer and deepening by 40-50 cm.The diameter of the hole should reach 60-80 cm.The resulting depression is filled with a nutrient substrate based on garden soil, mineral substances and organics. You can cover it until landing.
In the spring, the seedling is transferred to the prepared hole, placed so that the root collar is about 5 cm above the soil level on the site. A retaining peg is driven in next to it. Then the pit is filled up with the removed sod without the addition of fertilizers, and is compacted along the top. The seedling is tied up with a synthetic rope. It is poured with 4 buckets of water, they are brought in gradually, allowing the moisture to be completely absorbed.
Aftercare also involves some effort on the part of the grower. Young trees need intensive moisture until July. You will have to bring in about 5 buckets at a time 2-3 times a month. It is important that the soil remains moist to a depth of 40 cm in the root zone, and the water does not stagnate at the roots.
Fertilizers, if they were laid during planting, will have to be applied no earlier than 3 years of the tree's life on the site. Mineral supplements are introduced little by little. The first is given in the fall, when digging, using potassium and phosphorus. In the spring of 4 years before and after flowering, it is worth preparing nitrogen fertilizers. Strongly acidic soils are periodically dug up with wood ash.
Since the crown of the tree in this variety of plums thickens rather quickly, it is thinned out. Sick and old branches are cut out. If the top of the tree is below the side shoots, they are shortened, giving the crown a correct spherical shape.
Disease and pest resistance
Average protection against fungal diseases and infections makes this plum noticeably more vulnerable than other varieties. She often suffers from typical diseases of fruit trees. To preserve the harvest, it is necessary to regularly spray with special preparations. Smallpox or sharka is especially dangerous for this plum, which manifests itself in ring-shaped spots on the leaves, deterioration of the quality of the fruit - such trees are destroyed.
Among the pests on trees, the most common moth or sawflies, gall mites. Treatment is carried out with the selection of insecticides.
Hungarian Moskovskaya is prone to brown spotting. It is caused by a deficiency of minerals.Such trees are fed with granular mixtures with magnesium and potassium, bringing them into the root zone. Yellowing or chlorosis of leaves is treated with nitrogen foliar spraying with solutions of urea, nitrate.
Despite the fact that plum is considered more hardy than many fruit trees, it is not immune from diseases. It is attacked by viral, fungal and bacterial infections, and parasitic insects harm it. It is necessary to notice and recognize the signs of plum disease in time. They are easier to deal with and defeat early on. Well, in order to protect the garden tree from such a misfortune in the future, preventive procedures can be carried out.
Resistance to soil and climatic conditions
Hungarian Moskovskaya is distinguished by average winter hardiness. At the same time, trees have high regenerative abilities. The fruits are resistant to cracking even in the dampest weather.
Review overview
Since the variety belongs to one of the old, Soviet selection, for a long time it was actively grown in collective farm gardens, you can find a lot of reviews about Vengerka Moskovskaya. For many summer residents, the variety has been growing for decades, planting rejuvenation occurs naturally, due to the abundant root growth. It is noted that the presence of the Moscow Hungarian in the garden has a good effect on the fruiting of other plums and even cherry plums, and the tree itself, having entered the time of the return of the harvest, only increases its volume.
The disadvantages of the variety are also quite obvious. Fruit tree owners note that in severe frosts, plants often lose most of the shoots. Summer residents are unhappy with the long wait for the first fruiting. The plums themselves are gaining taste gradually, often in September they are still too sour, but after lying at home they become softer and sweeter.
