Plum Timiryazev's memory is capable of challenging many tried and tested cultivars in the right hands. However, even this decent plant can be ruined or reduced to complete insignificance. To avoid such a development of events and get a decent result, objective and accurate information is needed.
Breeding history
This representative of home plums cannot be called a beginner in gardening. General varietal tests Memory of Timiryazev took place since 1948, and in 1959 it was included in the list of crops permitted for cultivation. It is known that the project was carried out at the All-Russian Research Institute of Horticulture and Nursery. The breeders Yenikeev, Efimov and Satarov led the work on breeding the variety. The genetic material of Skorospelka red and Victoria was taken as a basis.
Description of the variety
It looks like a homemade plum. A multipurpose crop produces medium-sized trees. Their trunks are crowned with a rounded crown, which visually creates the impression of the top of a bush. The number of branches and leaves on them is moderately large. Light brown shoots are fairly pubescent. The leaves are shaped like an inverted egg, are light green in color and have slight wrinkles. It is believed that Timiryazev's memory is capable of living for 21 years.
Fruit characteristics
Monostable women reach medium size. They can weigh an average of 22 grams. Geometrically, such fruits are closest to an elongated egg. The yellow peel is covered with a pronounced blush. The stone is moderately large and separates from the pulp without problems.
Taste qualities
The yellow pulp of Timiryazev's memory is relatively juicy. True, she will hardly be able to break the record for juiciness. The fruits of this variety are fibrous. They can have different tastes, from sweet and sour to insipid sensation. The aroma is moderately pronounced.
The share of dry matter reaches 15%. The sugar content is 9.3%. The concentration of free acids in the pulp is 1.4%. Up to 110 mg of vitamin C is present in 1 kg of fruit. Tasting examination gives an average score of 4.2 points.
Ripening and fruiting
Timiryazev's memory is referred to as mid-late drains. The specific date for harvesting fruits usually occurs in August or in the first days of autumn. But it is also influenced by the weather and a large number of other significant factors. The early maturity is quite high, you can count on harvesting within 3-4 years after planting. Flowering usually occurs on May 13-22; fruiting is periodic, but this periodicity is poorly expressed.
Yield
The productivity of the variety is above average. Even the appearance of a large number of newer types does not prevent this. It has been officially announced that the harvest from 1 tree can reach 9 kg. The specific indicator depends on the preparation of the soil, on other agricultural measures and on the weather.It is noteworthy that the harvested crop is easily transported over a considerable distance.
Growing regions
The variety is zoned for the Central and Middle Volga regions, in particular, for:
Moscow;
Ryazan;
Penza;
Smolenskaya;
Tula regions.
Self-fertility and the need for pollinators
The variety is self-fertile. There is no need to use pollinating plants when growing it. It should be borne in mind, however, that self-fertility is not always constant. The presence of pollinators can sometimes increase overall productivity.
Growing and care
Planting such a plum in the spring is the most promising. It's best to hurry up until the buds are full. When using seedlings with a closed root system, there is no need to rush - you can plant it through October, inclusive, as long as warm weather permits.
Important: Timiryazev's memory must be removed at least 3 m from any fence, from a house or an outbuilding. The same distance is maintained in relation to other landings.
This plum does not tolerate waterlogging and stagnation of water in the root zone. Therefore, it is best to abstain from lowland landings. Soil waters should be at a depth of at least 2 m. Optimal soils are neutral loams or sandy loams. Sour soil is improved with crushed dolomite or fluff lime.
It is recommended to prepare a spring planting in late autumn. At the time of landing, the ground may not have time to thaw yet - but this is not critical for the culture. But if you are late, juices will actively move inside the plant, and this is practically a sure harbinger of failure. It is recommended to saturate sandy areas with high-moor peat. Pruning is carried out in the same way as for tree plums; only the trimming of the center conductor is specific.
In the first year of development, the seedlings are supposed to be built at a level of 1 m above the soil level. In the second year, in May or June, you need to shorten the entire growth to 25 cm in length. There is no need to be afraid - the tolerance of such radical measures at a young age is excellent. During the third season, the shoot extensions of the skeletal branches and the central conductor are shortened to 30 cm.Other growths at this moment are cut to 15 cm.
Starting from the 4th year of development, the plum already needs thinning and sanitary pruning. If everything was done correctly before, then there will be no need to additionally form the plant. Thinning plantings is most reliable by hand.
Excessive hydration and draining are equally harmful to Timiryazev's memory. Therefore, the intensity of irrigation is calculated taking into account precipitation; seedlings suffer from drought more than adult specimens, and they need to be watered more actively.
It is advisable to mulch the trunk circle. It is necessary to water the plum in Memory of Timiryazev until August. Too long growth of shoots can wear down the plant and lead it to death already at the onset of the first cold weather. However, this does not negate the need for water charging irrigation in October. Provided that the initial planting is correct, feeding in the first 2 years of development will not be needed.
Fertilization is usually done in spring and summer. Autumn feeds are impractical and can even harm the plants. When introducing minerals, one must not forget about organic components. The near-stem section must be kept clean at all times. Before the onset of winter, the tree is sprayed with Bordeaux liquid at a concentration of 3%.
Disease and pest resistance
Resistance to pathologies and main pests of plums is not above average. Therefore, preventive treatments and other supportive measures must be carried out without fail. They are dealt with in the same way as in the case of other varieties of plums. The instructions for the drugs must be followed strictly. Among harmful insects, ticks are especially dangerous.
Despite the fact that plum is considered more hardy than many fruit trees, it is not immune from diseases. It is attacked by viral, fungal and bacterial infections, and parasitic insects harm it. It is necessary to notice and recognize the signs of plum disease in time. They are easier to deal with and defeat early on. Well, in order to protect the garden tree from such a misfortune in the future, preventive procedures can be carried out.
Resistance to soil and climatic conditions
Winter hardiness in Memory of Timiryazev is at a decent level. It is also noted that this plant is able to survive hot periods without too many problems. It is worth noting that frost damage to shoots is, on average, more severe than flower buds.
