Plum, one of the favorite fruits, cultivated not only in the garden plots of the southern regions, but also in the more northern regions - the Middle Strip, the Urals, Siberia. Home plum Honey white, Honey yellow has an attractive appearance, excellent taste, high portability and versatility. Its fruits are used for fresh consumption, amazingly beautiful and tasty jams, preserves, confitures are made from them, used in desserts, baked goods.
Breeding history
The authorship in obtaining the variety belongs to the Ukrainian breeder L. N. Taranenko. Taranenko's work was carried out by order of the state, when, in the difficult post-war years, people desperately needed increased nutrition and vitamins. An additional task is to get a crop from a crop in any conditions.
Description of the variety
A vigorous (4-7 m) tree has a powerful spreading crown of medium density, reaching 5 meters in diameter. Fortunately, the plum is not prone to excessive sprouting and therefore thickening. The plant can be safely called unpretentious, despite the fact that certain agrotechnical conditions have to be fulfilled, but this is typical for all fruit and berry crops, if the gardener is faced with the task of obtaining the maximum yield.
Pros:
high adaptive abilities;
calm reaction to temperature changes;
the variety is not afraid of return frosts, calmly tolerates drought;
early maturity, excellent taste, universal purpose, transportability;
when pollinated by other varieties, the fruits of Honey White do not change the quality indicators.
Disadvantages - a very large crown, which makes it much more difficult to process and harvest.
Fruit characteristics
Large (40-50 g), aligned, rounded fruits are colored in yellow tones with an orange blush, and are covered with a dense skin with a strong bloom of prune. The bone is quite easily separated from the pulp.
Taste qualities
Juicy yellow pulp has a sweet honey taste with a slight acidity and delicate aroma. The assessment of the tasting committee is 4.5 points out of five.
Ripening and fruiting
The variety belongs to the early category: the crop is harvested in late July - early August. Fruiting begins in the 4th year after planting, if agrotechnical conditions are met.
Yield
Honey is characterized as a high-yielding variety - up to 35 kg of fruits are harvested from one tree. Moreover, the wood of this variety is very weak, and skeletal branches often break off under the weight of the harvest. To preserve the tree, gardeners install props.
Growing regions
Honey white was bred in Ukraine, adapted to local conditions, eventually mastered the entire post-Soviet space - Moldova, Transcarpathia. In the Russian Federation, it lives in the Kaluga region, the Central Black Earth Region, the Belgorod region and even in Altai.
Self-fertility and the need for pollinators
The variety is self-fertile and needs pollinating varieties - Vengerka Rannyaya, Renklod Karbysheva.
Growing and care
Due to the voluminous crown, plants require a rather large distance between trees, but, fortunately, the variety does not suffer from thickening. It should be remembered that despite the drought resistance, the plant loves abundant watering.
The most suitable planting material is annual seedlings with a closed root system (CCS), but plums take root well on open roots (CCS), especially if they are pretreated with Kornevin. You should take a close look at the appearance - the bark should be smooth and intact, the trunk is even, without visible defects, there are live fruit buds on the branches. The maximum height is up to 1.5 meters, tall plants have lower survival rates.
Good neighbors for plums are cherry plums, cherries, apricots, peaches and aphid repellent elderberry. It is contraindicated to be near conifers, birches, pears and walnuts.
Plants are planted in both spring and autumn. The planting site should be sunny, with sandy or clayey soil. The optimal distance between the trunks is 3 m, between the rows is 5 meters, but it does not tolerate swampy areas of discharge. The dimensions of the planting pit are 60x60x60 cm. A drainage layer is organized at the bottom, a support for the fragile stem is installed. The fertile part of the excavated land is mixed with lime, humus, superphosphate, wood ash, potassium chloride.
A smaller part of the excavated and prepared soil is poured onto the drainage layer. The plant is carefully installed, spreading the roots, if it is an ACS, or simply installed, if a specimen is planted with an ACS. Fertile soil is poured, the root collar is left open 5-6 cm. The trunk circle is compacted, abundantly watered with 2-3 buckets of warm, settled water.
The next day, the soil must be loosened to prevent drying out and crusting, as well as subsequent cracking. Wet soil can be covered with a layer of peat, using it as mulch, which allows it to retain moisture for a long time. The seedling is regularly watered in the first season, an adult tree is much less frequent, but abundant. Irrigate in spring, during flowering and during the period of fruit filling. At least 30 liters of moisture is introduced under each tree. In the fall, to ensure a successful wintering, each plant is watered with 8 buckets of water.
The introduction of additional nutrients begins at the age of 4, if the planting pit was filled in accordance with agrotechnical requirements. Under the drain, 20-30 kg of manure, superphosphate, saltpeter, potassium salt are introduced. An extensive crown forces garden owners to carry out formative pruning. For 2 years, some extra shoots are removed, ensuring good ventilation and access to sunlight. The extended branches are shortened by one ring, achieving a crown as compact as possible. Rejuvenating procedures are necessary for adult trees to prolong the full development and duration of fruiting. All branches older than 5 years are subject to pruning, giving way to replacement shoots. Actively emerging young growth must be regularly removed - for its development, it takes too much energy from the plum.
Autumn preparation for the winter season involves several stages. Whitewashing of trunks with a mixture of lime, copper sulfate, casein glue. The solution repels rodents and pests. Before whitewashing, the bark is examined and cleaned of lichen. A good additional, perhaps the main measure of protection, will be the use of spruce branches or a special net wrapped around the trunk to a height of 70-100 cm. The trunk circle is covered with humus or compost with a thick layer - at least 20 cm under an adult tree.
Disease and pest resistance
Practice has shown that Medovaya is highly resistant to moniliosis, however, perforated spotting, rust, and putrefactive fungi pose a danger to it. Of the pests, the pear is attacked - sawfly, aphids, scale insects and weevils. Therefore, preventive treatments with insecticides and fungicides.
Despite the fact that plum is considered more hardy than many fruit trees, it is not immune from diseases. It is attacked by viral, fungal and bacterial infections, and parasitic insects harm it. It is necessary to notice and recognize the signs of plum disease in time. They are easier to deal with and defeat early on. Well, in order to protect the garden tree from such a misfortune in the future, preventive procedures can be carried out.
Resistance to soil and climatic conditions
Honey is characterized as a plant with high winter hardiness and drought resistance.
