Benches with storage boxes
Modern furniture is not only aesthetic, but also as practical as possible. Benches with storage boxes are an example of this. From the material in this article, you will learn about their features and varieties. In addition, we will tell you how to make them yourself.
Peculiarities
Benches with storage boxes are referred to as universal furniture. Depending on their variety, they are used to equip residential and non-residential rooms for various purposes (kitchens, living rooms, hallways, offices, balconies, loggias). Besides, they can be seen in open and closed gazebos, on terraces, verandas. They decorate bay windows, nurseries, bathrooms and recreation areas.
Such furniture can become an independent accent of the interior or a part of it. For example, it can become part of a kitchen set. At the same time, the shape, color, size, functionality and design of products can be very diverse. Benches can differ in the depth of the seat, the degree of rigidity.
Due to the presence of boxes, they relieve space, which is especially important for small-sized rooms. They are standard and non-standard, they can be ordered for a specific place of the dwelling (for example, for embedding into the wall between niches).
Such furniture contributes to the creation of a cozy atmosphere; it can be selected for any interior style (from minimalism to solemn classics and creativity).
Varieties
Benches with storage boxes can be classified according to several criteria. According to their form, they are divided into 3 types:
- straight (linear);
- corner;
- semicircular.
Angle models are divided into 2 groups: L-shaped and U-shaped... Semicircular (radius) benches are bought for arranging spacious living rooms, rounded bay windows.
According to the type of opening of the boxes, the models are divided into three types:
- folding;
- roll-out;
- retractable.
A variety of opening and closing mechanisms allows you to choose options even for small rooms, without creating discomfort for users. At the same time, products can have a different number of boxes (from 1 to 3, and in individual projects - up to 5-7). Some variants have drawers in the form of baskets.
The models differ in the number of seats. Most often, they are designed for two people, however, custom-made products are made on which not only family members, but also their guests can be placed. For example, it is these models that are best suited for arranging six- and octagonal gazebos. Models can have a different number of support legs, or they may not have them at all.
Depending on the size, the models are standard and children's. Variants of the second group are suitable for arranging children's rooms. In addition to sitting, they can be used for storing toys. Models for adults sometimes resemble sofa benches. Depending on the length and depth of the seat, the benches can not only sit, but also lie down.
Besides, the entire product range at the point of use can be divided into 3 types: options for indoor, outdoor models and products that can be installed both at home and outdoors. At the same time, some of them are not afraid of either rain or the scorching sun. For example, garden benches with boxes are a good solution for summer recreation in the country. They can be placed right next to the entrance to the house (on the terrace, veranda) or in the garden under the crowns of trees, if desired, supplemented with a small table.
Modifications are made with or without a backrest. Moreover, the structures often have a soft filler in the back and seat area, which increases the comfort of users. For greater convenience, manufacturers often complement designs with comfortable armrests. The shape and width of these elements can vary.
Other benches have soft cushions that make them look like sofas.
Simple benches have no covers. However, custom-made analogs, as well as expensive interior benches, are most often supplied with protective packaging for the main parts. This makes it possible to replace the covers and extend the service life. Most often, covers are worn on pillows under the back. Such additions have Velcro or zippers.
When choosing one or another option, it is worth considering other nuances. For example, furniture can be paired, symmetrical, single. The locations of the boxes themselves may differ from the shops. In addition to the standard placement (front), they can be located on the side. These benches can be placed opposite each other in the dining area or small kitchen, placing a dining table between them.
Materials (edit)
The raw materials used to make benches with storage boxes can be very diverse. Most often these are:
- tree, its derivatives;
- metal;
- plastic;
- polypropylene.
The body of budget products is made of laminated chipboard, MDF. Wooden furniture is expensive, but also more durable. Metal is used for fasteners and fittings. Children's benches with boxes and analogues for relaxing in the garden are made of plastic.
The upholstery material for this furniture can be very diverse. The most expensive raw materials are natural and artificial leather. These benches resemble solid sofas. This coating is easy to maintain, durable and aesthetically pleasing. Does not allow moisture to pass through, does not absorb dirt, retains its attractive appearance for a long time.
Budget modifications are covered with furniture textiles (tapestry, suede, velor). Unlike leather, these fabrics are most often decorated with a variety of patterns. This allows you to choose options for any color scheme of the interior and even for wallpaper or curtains. The filling material also differs, which is often used as furniture foam rubber. Some models are equipped with mattresses and soft padding.
Drawings and dimensions
If you are going to make a kitchen, garden or other bench, you have to make calculations for the amount of material. At the same time, they start from the dimensions: it is on their basis that the drawings of the future product are created. Shop parameters may vary.
The usual standard seating depth for a kitchen bench is 45 cm, and the back height should be at least 40-50 cm.
The height from the floor to the seat must be at least 35 cm. The total height of the product from the floor to the upper edge of the back can be up to 90-100 cm. The length on average varies from 80 to 150 cm and more. The height of the legs can be from 3 to 10 cm or more. Moreover, they are not only straight, but also curved, and even X-shaped. Taking into account the selected parameters, create a drawing of the product. This will help to properly prepare the parts for assembly.
The height of the back of some products may be commensurate with the height of the wardrobe. For example, such backs are typical for benches in the hallway. Hooks for clothes can be hung on these backs, which will increase their functionality. In the boxes, you can store shoes that are not worn in this season. Moreover, the number of tiers for boxes may be different (more often it is 1, but models with boxes in 2 rows are purchased for hallways).
How to do it yourself?
Depending on the qualifications of the master, you can even make a bench with boxes from improvised material. In this case, the product may differ in the level of complexity of the design. We offer step-by-step instructions for making a simple bench with storage boxes.
For manufacturing, you will need chipboard sheets, which are sold in hardware stores. In addition to them, it is necessary to prepare bars of 40x40 mm (for the frame) and tools. The main details of this product will be:
- walls (back and front);
- 2 sidewalls;
- box cover;
- the bottom of the box.
Before cutting out the main parts, they are marked on chipboard sheets. In this case, the parameters of the walls must be identical, as well as the sidewalls. The dimensions of the bottom of the box and its lid are also the same.
They arm themselves with a jigsaw and cut out details according to the marking. After cutting, the edges are sanded. Next, they begin to mark the places of the planned fasteners. An electric drill is used to drill them. After preparing the parts, they begin to assemble them.
To make the product more stable, its back wall can be attached to the wall of the room. After assembling the frame, they are engaged in attaching the top cover. It is seated on piano hinges, if desired, the top is supplemented with stuffing with a filler.
During assembly, the position of each structural element is controlled using a square and a level. If desired, the product is varnished or painted in the chosen color. Someone prefers to decorate benches with simple ornaments. Others leave behind a deliberately rough design. In other cases, the product is sheathed with clapboard.
You can also decorate the product with improvised materials (including leftover leather, fabric and even self-adhesive).
