Often, the bench is painted not only for decorative purposes - the paint also perfectly protects it from negative external influences and prolongs its service life. There is a huge selection of paints on the market, including both bright and strong colors. Basically, a garden bench is made of wood, so the choice of paint will be based on this. The most popular is oil paint - it works on both metal and wood. Let's find out more about everything.

Requirements for materials

The choice of paint depends on the material of the bench and also on what coating was applied before painting. A bench made of wood (which is the most common) previously painted does not need impregnation - it is necessary to remove the paint from it if possible and paint it with a new one (if you want to get a beautiful result in the end).

If the bench has not been painted, then it needs to be impregnated against decay.

It is not difficult to paint a garden bench, but you should know which dye is best for you. Oil paint is ideal for wood (for example, MA-15). It adheres well to wood and is suitable for outdoor furniture. Oil paint is also suitable for a metal garden bench - it is applied in 2 layers with drying. The paint is chosen depending on the overall design of the garden - the bench should fit well into it.

Varieties of paints

Whichever paint the consumer chooses, there is one rule: before painting, you need to use a primer for the wooden bench parts. The primer helps to level its surface. Let's take a look at the most popular types of paints used to paint a bench.

Alkyd

If the furniture is located in a place with a very hot climate, alkyd paint is suitable for it, it is able to withstand high temperatures and is not afraid of moisture. This inexpensive paint has excellent decorative properties. Alkyd paints are well compatible with various types of surfaces. The likelihood of smudges, delamination and pockmarks is minimized. The downside is that when it dries, it gives off a pungent smell, but after 2 weeks after painting, it disappears.

Acrylic

Acrylic paints are most loved by consumers for their moisture resistance and ease of application. The choice is due to the fact that such a paint is neutral to an aggressive environment, which is the key to long-term operation. Interestingly, acrylic compounds have excellent hiding power, which allows you to easily create even and smooth coatings, even if the bench has rough wood (roughness up to 1 mm.)

Oil

Oil paints are good because they contain only natural substances, due to which the paint qualitatively impregnates the surface and provides the wood with excellent decorative properties and antiseptic protection. Such a coating is resistant to any kind of precipitation, sunlight and aggressive climatic influences. Oil paint retains color contrast for many years and, unlike other paints, provides wood protection against fungus and other harmful microorganisms.

Bench Design Ideas

Painting a bench is a creative process. So you can use a wide variety of ideas. From an inconspicuous old bench in the garden, bright and original furniture can appear - you will want to relax on it, comfortably seated on a summer night, and look at the stars! If you approach staining wisely, a bench can be a great addition to the overall design of the garden and even decorate it. The most popular are models made of wood and metal - they fit perfectly into the interior.

One of the ingenious solutions (as you can see by looking at the photo) is a wooden bench with flower beds. In this practical version, the bench is combined with the flower beds. Sitting on such furniture, feeling the aroma of flowering plants, is a pleasure! There is another easy way to get an interesting bench in the garden - for this you need blocks (these are used in construction) and beams - ready-made, painted, you can easily insert into the holes of the blocks, and the seat is ready.

Despite the primitiveness, such a bench is simple to perform and does not take much time to create. It is perfect for relaxing at a summer cottage. You can also build a simple bench using wooden pallets, the main thing is to turn on your imagination and be creative in the process. The most important condition is that the bench should be not only beautiful, but also practical. Decorative bright pillows can complement the painted bench.

When decorating the bench, you can use the "antique" painting technique. Antique items certainly have charm and look very sophisticated. For the aging of the tree, the surface is preliminarily prepared and processed. Preparation includes the following steps:

  • cleaning the product from old paint;
  • grinding;
  • cleaning the polished material from dust and dirt;
  • antiseptic coating.

Usually, the bench "antique" is not putty, on the contrary, if the surface is flat, small chips and cracks are added to it - they give the future bench realism. Designers suggest brushing - this method is great for a wooden bench. First, matte acrylic paint is applied to the surface, then natural scuffs are created using a metal sponge.

Next, the surface is cleaned of dust and another layer of paint is applied. In the end, fine-grained sandpaper is "passed" over the entire painted surface. Sometimes, in order to achieve a brighter effect, some places are additionally treated with abrasive oil. Usually, wanting to achieve the effect of an antique, the color of the paint is chosen brown, wenge or walnut. Wenge looks especially bright, which got its name from a variety of tropical trees, which are native to Africa.

Which is better to choose

Of course, in the question of shelf life, material such as stone wins, but wood is most often chosen for a street shop. There are practically no design frames for a wooden bench: it fits into any garden interior.

However, it is worth considering the fact that wood is less resistant to moisture and microorganisms than plastic, metal or stone.

In order to create a shop that will last for a long time, you need to combine different materials. The combination of materials is considered a good option, which is often used for a bench in the garden. For the side pieces that will hold the wooden board, you can use concrete or a metal frame. If it is filled with stones, it will look very stylish. Stone and wood are acceptable variations.

For a bench in the country, it is more advisable to choose Pinotex Terrace oil for wood before directly painting. It can be tinted in 40 colors and is just for outdoor furniture. It is best to prime with Pinotex Base - terrace oil. It is applied in 2 layers - it takes 24 hours to dry, after which it will take the same amount to dry, but the result is worth it. For the best wear resistance, you can “walk” 2 times with Pinotex Lacker Yacht varnish, which consumers say very well.

The conclusion can be made as follows - in order for the street bench to acquire a beautiful appearance, it is better to paint it with natural oil paints. Their composition provides protection against mold and mildew to painted wood products and possesses high decorative properties.

In addition, the painted bench with oil paints does not crack, is resistant to moisture and ultraviolet radiation.

How to paint correctly

A garden bench is an indispensable attribute of any suburban area. DIY painting involves a series of steps, following which you can get a beautiful bench. First you need to decide on the color. Then with a staining option. Now consumers willingly paint benches in the yard or in the garden with spray cans - this is not only convenient, but also significantly saves time.

To paint correctly, follow the step-by-step instructions.

  1. Surface preparation. The first step is to prepare the surface - this is necessary in order for the paint to lay down properly. If there are roughness on the surface, it is sanded and then degreased.
  2. Primer. Further, the bench is primed with white soil (2-3 layers) with a thin application. It evens out the surface and gently smoothes out small irregularities left after sanding. After drying, you can proceed to painting.
  3. Painting. If a can of paint is used (which is very convenient), the contents are applied at a distance of 30 cm. For maximum effect, several layers are applied, adhering to an interlayer exposure of 2-3 minutes.

Note! You can sit on a bench painted in warm weather after 120 minutes. Spray paints dry very quickly, which is their main advantage. Whichever paint you choose, remember to prepare the surface.

To prevent the paint from peeling off the street bench, it is enough to prepare the surface and paint it in accordance with the instructions for the paint. A prerequisite - the surface must be cleaned, pre-primed and dried.

If there is no dirt, moisture and voids under the paint, it will not flake off and will last for many years.

Wooden furniture (including outdoor furniture) can be decorated in various shades, which will make it unique. Each paint is different in composition, and there are requirements for its application, so you should read the instructions in advance. Everyone has their own way of painting outdoor furniture - the most important thing is to choose the one that will make the bench last a long time and not lose its original appearance.
