Venetian plaster in interior design
The choice of decorative finishing material for walls is a topical issue during any renovation. Venetian plaster will help to make your interior fashionable, sophisticated and luxurious. Such a coating is always relevant and can be made in any color.
Peculiarities
Venetian plaster resembles marble in its texture and color rendering. Stone dust is used as the basis of the mixture, which gives this effect. The final result will vary depending on the size of the fractions. The stone is used in the following types: granite, quartz, marble, onyx, malachite, limestone. But more often than not it is not some kind of breed, but a mixture of different ones.
Previously, slaked lime acted as a binder, but thanks to modern technologies, the composition has changed: acrylic resins and polymers have excellent characteristics, while being safe for human health.
To give the mixture the desired shade, pigments are added to it. They can be organic or inorganic. In addition to the desired color, the pigment protects the finished surface from fading and other external influences. After plastering the surface of the wall, it is treated with protective wax, which gives elasticity to the coating and repels dust.
Venetian decor is for interior use only. Delicate material is not designed for aggressive environments, temperature extremes and high humidity. The required microclimate is a living room, bedroom, dining room, corridor or hall. For a bathroom and a kitchen apron, such material should not be used.

- requires a certain skill from the master.
Color spectrum
Initially, such a finishing material for the walls was supposed to be a clear imitation of marble. Therefore, the classic options will be color solutions based on this material: gray, white, emerald, light and rich brown.
For small rooms, light-colored Venetian plaster is suitable. This color will expand the space, allow you to admire the wall covering up close.
Bright, unusual colors such as chocolate, lilac, blue, yellow, orange are also very relevant. These walls fit perfectly into southern and eclectic interiors. Colors can be combined, created transitions, played with material depending on the lighting. An interesting solution may be to insert a panel from photo wallpaper.
In addition to color, the Venetian plaster is complemented by mother-of-pearl. Different colors give different effects when combined with pearlescent tints. Some blends have a strong shine, and some have a nice subtle sheen.
Venetian plaster is usually ordered in advance, since the point of sale specialist mixes the desired color for a specific individual order. Of course, there are standard color schemes, but you can achieve the desired result only after careful coloring.
Design
Depending on the composition of the mixture, a varied effect is created on the surface of the walls when applying Venetian plaster. There are types of plaster that are in demand and have excellent external characteristics.
Trevignano
This plaster belongs to the premium class. It really looks luxurious on the walls. The Trevignano texture very closely follows the texture and color play of real marble. In addition, the coating does not look cold, it is pleasant to the touch, velvety, reminiscent of cashmere.
This type of coating is applied to the surface in thin layers., which allows you to create the illusion of marble with its characteristic veins and color effects. If you treat the finished decorative surface with a special wax, then Trevignano can become a decoration of the bathroom, but it is better to finish the shower area with a more waterproof material. On sale can be found in packages of 5 and 25 kg.
Veneto
After applying the decorative material, the effect of a matte finish is created. This property also appears in polished marble. This type of plaster is very popular due to its ease of application, but despite this, it looks very noble. The sheenless finish makes it the choice for masculine and minimalist designs. It can often be found in loft and high-tech interiors. Sold in packs of 25 kg.
Marbella
This type of Venetian plaster has its roots in Morocco. Such a coating is distinguished by large matte velvety strokes, between which sparkling, shiny veins pour in thin streams. This type of plaster is used not only for wall decoration, it can be used to decorate ceilings, columns, cornices, niches. This is achieved due to the high degree of elasticity of the material. One package of products contains 7 kilograms of the mixture.
Encausto
This plaster has a complex application method, which consists of two stages. First, a mixture of "Encausto Premiere" with a mineral filler is applied, creating a textured surface, and then for the topcoats, a solution based on Encausto limestone.
Thanks to such a difficult application, an absolutely amazing effect is obtained: polished marble gets unusual shining blotches. Silver shades look noble and strict, warm and golden tones are luxurious and expensive. One package contains 25 kilograms of solution.
Tierrafino
Tierrafino plaster will definitely be chosen by those who like to be in luxury, who like to create interiors of palaces at home. This mixture resembles moiré fabric, gilded marble or traventine. It has an indescribable pearl overflow.
This patination method, which is in demand in the furniture industry for creating classic groups, can be no less elegant for decorative wall or ceiling decoration.
Thanks to a special application technique, it is Tierrafino plaster that creates the popular and fashionable “map of the world” coating effect. There is a package on sale that contains 7 kilograms of the ready-to-use mixture.
Imperiale
Plaster worthy of palace chambers. Gold pigment mixed into the mixture allows you to achieve pompous luxury of the walls. The pattern is applied in several translucent layers, which allows you to create not only chic, but also a complex sophisticated and shimmering marble pattern, thereby confirming that marble is a "shining stone". One package contains 4 kilograms of ready-mixed mixture.
Thanks to the large number of possible effects of Venetian plaster, you can create unique interiors that will delight the eye for a long time, while remaining relevant. The Venetian is well combined with other hotel materials, you can choose interesting combinations and create a room design in any style.
In palace interiors, coatings of pure colors with mother-of-pearl and gold pigment can be used., combining with natural marble, wood, matt white plastered walls.
In a loft-style interior, matte steel shades will harmoniously overlap with brick and a lot of metal decor. This choice is also relevant for minimalist designs. Bright, fresh, rich colors with golden veins are an excellent solution for oriental interiors.
Which one to choose?
The choice of finishing materials for walls is individual for everyone. However, Venetian plastering is a long-term investment and not cheap. That is why it is worth approaching the issue with special care.
The first task is to determine with the room where the coating will be used. The Venetian looks great in large, spacious rooms, such as the living room. The hall will acquire a palace splendor if the mixture contains gold pigment or the effect of mother-of-pearl. Of course, the rest of the interior details must match. Panels with medieval subjects, volumetric crystal chandeliers, curtains with lambrequins, stucco molding will perfectly fit into such a living room.
For modern designs in high-tech style, minimalism, loft plaster with a matte effect is perfect. The marble texture of cold, pastel, natural shades will be an excellent background for creating interiors in which the main task is to place accents. Such a reception is very typical for large living rooms. In order not to overload the situation, to give the eyes a rest, you should choose matte mixtures of laconic colors.
An interesting combination of colors and textures can be created for the kitchen. The dining area can be highlighted, a more embossed coating of a rich, “tasty” color can be applied to it, the rest of the walls can be muted, thus looking away from the working part. In the kitchen, it is important to use a wax coating that protects against excess moisture.
For halls, a neutral palette is suitable, preferably light colors, since often this room does not have access to natural light. You can use any texture, but you should not overpay for gold pigment and mother-of-pearl - due to the lack of light, the effect will be lost, and the hall is a passage area of an apartment or house.
In the hallway, walls often tend to get dirty. You can wash Venetian plaster, but it quickly absorbs dirt and you will have to work hard to bring it back to its original appearance, especially if the texture is porous and velvety. The first thing to do is to choose a dark pigment and a smooth surface, the second is to find a way to combine plaster horizontally, for example, with wall tiles, wood or plastic panels.
Very often in fashionable bathroom designs, you can find options with plaster. Unlike tiles, plastered walls create coziness, allow you to choose an exclusive color scheme, look fresh and not trivial. However, it is better to finish the shower area directly with tiles or mosaics. In terms of moisture resistance, such materials are not inferior to plaster, and the rest of the walls must be treated with wax.
Tips & Tricks
Before going to the store for a solution, you should take measurements of the room. The amount of work is calculated in meters squared. Almost all Venetian plasters are applied in two stages - base coat and top coat. The thickness of the first is 0.5-0.9 mm, the thickness of the second is 0.15-0.2 mm.Guided by the information on the volume of the mixture of each type in the package, you need to calculate the required amount for a particular room.
Directly at the point of sale, the consultant will offer to tint the mixture in the desired color. A catalog with colors is offered for each solution. Even if the desired shade is missing, you can create your own individual version by mixing several colors.
It is worth buying Venetian plaster immediately before use. The shelf life of an unopened package is 12 months, after the tinting process the package is considered opened.
Since the solution is already ready for application, it should not be diluted with water, this will damage the finishing material. The mixture should just be mixed well.
Self-application is possible after careful theoretical preparation, as well as if you have experience in finishing work. You should not try to carry out decorative plastering if you are not sure of the end result. You should also study the instructions for applying to a particular plaster: for example, in the technical description of the Marbella mixture, it is indicated that two masters are required during the application of layers, since the plaster dries quickly.
It is important that the surface of the substrate is flat and clean. Before applying the decorative mixture, the walls are treated with a special acrylic impregnation.
The texture of the marble is formed by a special Venetian trowel. There are different types of spatulas intended for this. The presence of a tool for corner work is considered mandatory.
First, a base, white coat is applied. It serves as a background for finishing decorative application. Thanks to the first layer, the effect of transparency of the coating is created, the wall seems to shine through.
Some types of plasters require a certain texture to be created at the base stage. Textured strokes must be created by one master so that all walls are treated equally. The end effect largely depends on "how the hand took it."
The application of a layer with a color scheme is considered the second stage., and it is produced in 8-12 hours. Some mixes, such as Trevignano, offer up to 12 layers of filler, each sanding and ironing. This creates a complex, multifaceted pattern, acquires a special spatial effect.
After the plaster has dried (1-2 weeks), you can start applying the protective wax. It is also applied with a spatula in two layers, each of which dries for 12-24 hours. Finally, the surface is polished to a high gloss.
Beautiful examples in the interior
The mirror shine of the Trevignano decorative Venetian plaster perfectly imitates the surface of marble. Thanks to the reflective smoothness of the walls, the space of the room expands, and the walls themselves seem transparent and weightless.
Imperiale plaster has a gold pigment. Gold and malachite are a combination worthy of palace chambers. A luminous, sparkling effect can be obtained with a different color scheme if a rich and bright green seems too bold.
Large strokes of "Marbella" are a great option to add texture to the room. Such a texture cannot be achieved either with wallpaper or with any other finishing materials. The wall, made with Moroccan plaster, does not require additional decorative elements, it itself is an object of art.
