Painting net for putty
Painting mesh is a reinforcing material consisting of cells of various sizes. It is made by pulling molten quartz glass and used for finishing work. Without a painting net, it will not be possible to make a high-quality repair, since it provides a reliable fixation of joints and plaster.
Peculiarities
Puttying is the last stage of finishing work before applying paints and varnishes. The quality of the work performed determines how long the repair will last, whether the walls will have an attractive appearance, as well as the strength and strength of the foundations. First of all, puttying is done to make walls and ceilings even and smooth, to seal cracks. The main role in this is played by the masking net. It is designed to hold the finish and prevent it from flaking. The mesh also protects against deformation and has a shockproof effect.
Reinforcing mesh has the following properties:
- fire resistance;
- moisture resistance;
- tolerates temperature changes well;
- non-toxicity;
- a wide range of applications (concrete, fiberboard, chipboard, brick and other materials).
Tensile strength depends on material thickness and mesh size. The more stable it is, the higher the quality of the material. Modern meshes are produced already impregnated with polyacrylic composition.
This is done in order to:
- maintain the strength of the material;
- do not perceive the effects of alkalis;
- increase the adhesion of the web to the surface;
- do not get hurt.

For plaster, painting nets based on fiberglass or polymers are used because they are lightweight. They are used when the thickness of the plaster layer is 2-3 cm, if the thickness is less than 2 cm, then reinforcement is not necessary, since the layer will be able to hold itself. For layers more than 5 cm, painting nets are not suitable, but some specialists apply several layers of reinforcing canvas. Reinforcing material is not enough just to be placed in the plaster layer, it must be fixed to the surface. For concrete walls, dowels are taken, for wooden walls - nails or self-tapping screws. This is done to ensure that the plaster does not lag behind the wall due to poor adhesion.
There are three types of painting nets, which differ in mesh size:
- reinforcing putty network;
- serpyanka;
- cobweb mesh.
For reinforcing mesh, the main criteria are the mesh size and density of the fiberglass. If the cells are small, then the mesh is soft. When choosing fiberglass, you need to focus on the type of surface. The mesh with thick threads is suitable for facade decoration, and with thin threads for interior decoration. Fiberglass is resistant to mechanical stress, temperature extremes, high humidity. Also, the reinforcing mesh is lightweight, does not lend itself to rust. If you just need to paint the walls in the end, then this type of mesh is well suited. First, you need to fully reinforce the surface of the walls with a putty network. For such a purpose, it is better to take a mesh with a mesh size of about 5x5 mm so that the plaster is better fixed. Cracks should not appear on a well-reinforced wall.
Serpyanka also consists of square-shaped cells of various sizes, but it most often contains an adhesive base. Supplied in rolls up to 20 meters, and narrow in width. Ideal for fiberboard, chipboard, drywall, cement and other materials. With its help, defects and cracks are eliminated, the surface of the ceilings is leveled, the walls become smooth.To reinforce the joints of the walls, you can purchase a special corner made of mesh, which will simplify the task and help putty everything well. Cobweb mesh (fiberglass) is perfect for large surfaces, as it is a wide roll. Fiberglass increases the adhesion of the plaster, because it is a non-woven fabric obtained as a result of pressing. Basically, the cobweb is used when reinforcing ceilings.
Application
Before using the reinforcing canvas, it is necessary to cut it into fragments, and already these fragments should be laid on the first layer of plaster. It is also important to overlap mesh sections. The reinforcing sheet is stretched along the plaster from the center to the edges. It is important to keep an eye on the edges of the canvas so that it does not peek.
The filler process using painting nets is almost the same for all types:
- it is necessary to prime the plastered surface;
- apply a putty layer only after the plaster has completely dried;
- using a spatula, a painting net is laid on a not dried layer of putty;
- apply another layer of putty.
When using serpyanka, first you need to clean the joints and prime them, and after drying, apply serpyanka. After all these actions, a second layer of putty is applied and leveled.
There are two ways to apply serpyanka:
- Fastening the mesh to the surface on which the adhesive has been previously applied. For better fixation, press the serpentine well to the surface. After the mesh has attached, you need to apply another layer of glue, and after complete drying, make a putty. This method can reduce the quality of the finish;
- A putty layer is applied to the surface, a mesh is applied to it. Immediately after fixing the mesh, apply a second layer of putty.
With fiberglass, all work is done with a roller. First, the glue is applied with a roller on the surface, then the fiberglass is applied so that the strips overlap each other by 50 mm. To level the mesh, it is necessary to run over it with a roller. Before using the cobweb mesh, it is necessary to prime the surface.
Grinding
After completing all the steps to reinforce the walls, it is necessary to carry out the finishing putty and sand the surfaces. The finishing putty is carried out in the same way as the main one. The main thing is to wait until the layer with the paint net is dry, otherwise the coating will not stick. The thickness of the finishing filler should be approximately 1-2 mm. Once dry, you can proceed to sanding. Grinding is carried out so that the walls are perfectly even and smooth, because the appearance of the room depends on this. In addition, paint or wallpaper does not hide defects, but emphasizes them. If the surface is uneven, the wallpaper may come off or wrinkle. To achieve the evenness of the walls, grinding is carried out several times in a well-lit place so that small defects are clearly visible.
After the completion of the putty, it is impossible to proceed to sanding earlier than in a day., you need to wait until the putty layer is completely dry. For grinding, use fine sandpaper or a sanding sponge. It is necessary to run it over the entire surface to remove all protrusions and irregularities. If there are large depressions, then they must be putty. When choosing sandpaper, you need to look at its graininess. At the very beginning of sanding, it is better to use coarse-grained sand, and at the end to give smoothness - fine-grained sandpaper.
Grinding is carried out in several stages, but the technology is the same - small areas of the surface are processed with rotational movements from top to bottom. During the process, the grit of the sandpaper changes. Usually, at the last stage, fine-grained sandpaper is used. For hard-to-reach places, use a sanding sponge or you can try to fold the sandpaper several times. In addition to sandpaper, you can use an abrasive mesh.Its main difference from paper is its high wear resistance, it is less clogged with dust, but also higher in price. If you have a grinder, the grinding process will be greatly accelerated. Moreover, the quality of work will increase. Sandpaper is also attached to the machine, and the surface is processed.
After sanding the walls, you must completely clean all surfaces from dust and dirt. To fix the result, the walls are primed again.
How to properly glue the masking net, see the video below.
I believe that the reinforcement of these compositions with a mesh is simply making money on the customers of the manufacturers of this mesh and the performers of the work. As an experienced builder, I believe that a well-prepared and thoroughly dust-free and primed surface guarantees an excellent adhesion result of modern compounds to the base (surface), since the copolymers contained in the compositions, plus the technology for applying the composition, provide sufficient adhesion without requiring the use of these stretchable mesh tricks ... The exception is the metal mesh-notch, which is previously well attached to the base ...
I agree with your opinion, and I will also add that there are still a lot of materials for the same "razvodilov" and many bloggers who promote these materials.
