Violet is a houseplant that grows at home in most. Due to its extraordinary beauty and long flowering, the flower is popular among both novice florists and experienced florists. The heroine of our article is only a distant relative of violets and bears this "name" as a more familiar one. So, we will talk about the Uzambara violet - Saintpaulia of the "AV-ecstasy" variety.

General characteristics and a little history

The description of the flower is very laconic: it is a short, herbaceous plant. Green, slightly wavy leaves are located on low stems, forming a basal rosette. The flowers are velvety, white-light green, as a rule, delight with their beauty for quite a long time. Discovered for the first time a blooming beauty in the African tropics. It received its scientific name Sainpaulia in honor of Saint-Paul - the baron, to whom it owes its discovery.

In 1892, he saw this flower among the boulders and sent it to his father, who had a collection of rare plants. The Uzambara violet was named by its consonance with the area in Tanzania, where Albert Saint-Paul noticed a flower while walking with his beloved. This was followed by exhibitions, publications in magazines, which helped Saintpaulia to become generally known.

How to choose?

If you want to become a happy owner of Saintpaulia, be sure to pay attention to the appearance of the plant when buying. It is better to visit the store in late autumn or at the beginning of summer, when the heat has not yet arrived. Beginning florists are tempted to buy an already blooming specimen, however, there is no need to rush: your purchase may turn into a disappointment. The fact is that plants in pots, as a rule, come to retail outlets from Western European countries, where they are grown commercially.

Pleasing the eye with rapid flowering for 1-2 months, Saintpaulias fade and in most cases die. Do you need temporary decoration? Buying cuttings, you will definitely not lose, because a young plant will quickly adapt to new conditions, and its price is much lower. However, with the definition of the "baby" variety, problems may arise. And yet there is still a risk of purchasing a flower that does not meet your expectations.

Among other things, growing a cuttings is a long process, and it will delight you with the first flowering only after a year.

Care features

Growing violets of this variety requires reverent attention to the temperature regime: they do not tolerate sudden changes in temperature, the optimal range is from +19 to + 24 ° C. Since the birthplace of our beauty is the tropics, where there is a rather long daylight hours, for good growth, Saintpaulia needs a lot of light - at least 12 hours a day. Therefore, in winter you need to create additional lighting - using a fluorescent lamp. But nevertheless, you should not go to extremes: uzambar violets are afraid of direct sunlight.

Along with lighting, watering is an equally important step in caring for our plant. It should be noted that the most common reason for the death of Saintpaulia is excess moisture. This factor is due to the structure of the leaves: small villi located on them save the plant from hypothermia and overheating, but when direct rays hit them, spots form on them - burns, and water drops a hundredfold increase the harmful effect of ultraviolet radiation.

The method of watering is also important. The most common overhead watering is not all that safe and must be done very carefully.Use a thin-nosed watering can and pour the water directly under the root without touching the leaves. Wick or lazy watering is safer and less labor intensive. As the name implies, water enters the pot using a wick, one end of which is inserted into the drain hole of the pot, and the other is lowered into a container of liquid. In a similar way, the plant itself "doses" the amount of moisture.

In the same way, Saintpaulia can independently control the flow of water when watering through a sump. The soil is saturated with liquid, and the excess is drained half an hour after watering. The soil for the plant must be loose so that the roots can be enriched with oxygen.

It is possible to purchase ready-made soil in a specialized store, and it is also allowed to plant in the ground of a coniferous forest with the addition of sand and sphagnum moss, leaf humus.

Undoubtedly, growing flowers and watching them grow is a favorite pastime for many of us. If you are just learning about the science of floriculture, Saintpaulia is the perfect choice, as it is easy to care for and unpretentious. "Advanced" plant lovers can prove themselves as breeders: mutations can result in bizarre colors and colors of the plant.
