Sea buckthorn scrapers
Harvesting sea buckthorn is a laborious task that requires not only tremendous patience and skill from the gardener, but also a significant investment of time. To simplify and speed up this process, many enterprising summer residents use various hand-made devices to collect fragrant fruits.
The most popular tools used by gardeners for harvesting sea buckthorn are scrapers of various configurations.. Consider what these devices are, how to use them and how to make them yourself.
What it is?
A scraper for collecting sea buckthorn is a device that greatly simplifies and facilitates the removal of ripe fruits, densely clinging to the branches of a tree (This feature, by the way, explains the origin of the Russian name for this fruit culture - "sea buckthorn"). The use of these simple and convenient tools allows not only to speed up the harvesting process, but also to minimize the risk of damage to both the branches of the tree and the removed fruits, which often burst, deform, and crumple during work.
The design of most models of sea buckthorn scrapers (both home-made and store-bought) is represented by two main elements - the handle and the working part. Below are the most popular models of scrapers with working parts of different design and shape options.
Varieties
To collect ripe sea buckthorn, modern gardeners use various types of scrapers that differ from each other mainly in the design of the working part. It should be noted that in terms of the effectiveness of their use, homemade models are not inferior to expensive store counterparts.
So, to collect ripe fruits, summer residents usually use the following types of scrapers:
- forceps;
- slingshots;
- "Cobra".
Each of these devices is distinguished by a specific configuration and shape of the working part, which is used directly for removing the fruits. Consider the methods of manufacturing each of these types of scrapers.
How to do it yourself?
To make a homemade scraper, they usually use inexpensive and readily available materials at hand - wire, fishing line, wooden and plastic spears. Some enterprising summer residents contrive to make comfortable scrapers from large table forks with two prongs (the so-called wasteful).
Scraper tongs
In order to make a scraper-tongs with your own hands, you will need to prepare a thick steel wire about 50 cm long.It is rolled up in the central part with a round loop so that the result is something like a large safety pin without a fastener (you can just wrap the glass with wire 2-3 times or a narrow bottle).
Then the ends of the wire should be straightened, aligned and bent at 90 degrees parallel to each other. The result should look like the photo.
Slingshot scraper
To make a slingshot scraper with your own hands, you will need a wooden or metal Y-shaped structure (a strong branch of a similar shape is also suitable). A thick fishing line is tied to its two ends in the upper part, which is pulled tight. The result should be such a device.
If a suitable Y-piece is not available, you can use a two-pronged kitchen fork for removing large pieces of meat from the cooking containers. On the teeth of this tool, fasten and pull the fishing line tightly, fixing it with rubber bands that will prevent slipping.
Scraper cobra
This model, like the previous designs, consists of a wooden handle and a wire working part bent in the shape of a candle flame or a cobra hood. This scraper, like the previous varieties, is used as follows:
- holding the tool by the handle, grab a branch with fruits with your free hand;
- "Stroking" the branch with a scraper in the direction from the base to the top, remove the fruits into a container substituted from below.
Instead of a container for collecting fruits, you can use plastic wrap spread under the tree, or an inverted open umbrella. It is important to note that it is necessary to collect sea buckthorn with thick gloves that will protect your hands from accidental injury.
