Any professional gardener and just an amateur will tell you that no gardening season can be started without a hoe. This versatile tool helps us plow our garden, get rid of weeds and manage our crops.

Homemade hoe from an old saw

Nevertheless, there are times when an old hoe breaks down, and a new one has not yet been bought, and the gardener has to make a tool from scrap materials. For a homemade hoe, a hacksaw blade is best suited, since this metal will withstand any load, and will also not wear out for a long time. However, such a tool made from scrap materials will only serve you one season. In the next one, you will need to take care of a new hoe.

To make a hoe with your own hands, you should adhere to the following steps:

  • first you need to saw off the canvas of the size you need; the best size is 25 cm;
  • we take an unnecessary old saw for wood and finally break it down; all the same, it will no longer be useful to us for its original purpose;
  • with the help of a grinder, we will make a cut at an angle of 45 degrees, towards the teeth of the file;
  • further, it is necessary to drill 3 holes for fastening, while the holes should be at the same distance;
  • using a drilling machine, you need to make the same number of holes in the metal corner with shelves;
  • the next step we need to fix the holder - for this we take a thick-walled metal pipe with a diameter of 25-30 mm and a length of 25-30 cm;
  • we hammer one side of the pipe with a hammer by 5 cm;
  • in order for the corner to stand firmly, it is necessary to drill a couple of holes;
  • as a result of all the work done, we get a finished canvas with teeth, and now it remains only to fix the handle in order to use the homemade tool for its intended purpose; you can choose any tree for the cutting, the main thing is that with this material you feel comfortable doing it in the garden;
  • using emery or a sharp knife, cut one edge of the cutting and insert it into the pipe;
  • so that the handle of the hoe is firmly fixed, we drive a nail into metal and wood;
  • then we will work with the old saw - it is necessary to get rid of the teeth that are not needed in the hoe; for this we take a grinder and level the surface of the hoe, while the teeth can be left, some gardeners claim that with them the hoe loosens wet soil better.

A chopper for cabbage or for weeding can be made, for example, from a trimmer, braid or cardboard. Such a weeder will be no worse than the purchased option.

Hoe from an old shovel

A hoe can be made from a regular shovel, which is definitely available in every area. It is worth adhering to the following steps:

  • using a grinder, we cut out a third of the shovel for ourselves from the sharp side;
  • we take a thick-walled pipe with a diameter of 2.5 cm and a thickness of 2 mm; we make one edge of the pipe flat, measure 5 cm from it and bend the pipe at a right angle;
  • in the flat part of the pipe and in the blade, we drill two holes, retreating 2 cm from the cut;
  • you can connect the pipe and the blade using a conventional screwdriver, which every owner has;
  • it remains only to attach a wooden handle, and the hoe is ready.

Important! Shovel hoes will last more than one season, as they are more durable.

The main problem with a purchased hoe is that it can go bad quickly. It has to be constantly undermined. Foreign-made hoes last much longer, but the price of a good tool is appropriate. However, many gardeners simply make hoes themselves from scrap materials that are stored on their site. For example, you can take a thin steel disc (approximately 3 mm thick). The main thing is that the disc is made of well-hardened steel. Then from it you can make not one, but several hoes. For the entire structure, you will also need blanks from a disc, a metal pipe and a handle. Part of the disc and the pipe must be welded to each other at a slight angle. The edge of the disc needs to be sharpened to keep it sharp. And in a metal pipe, a hole should be drilled for a screw that will hold the handle and the hoe together.

Homemade hoe from a regular piece of metal

In general, any piece of durable metal is suitable for a hoe. An old shovel or saw can not always be stored on the gardener's site, so simple metal is also suitable for a hoe, which can certainly be found in the country. Of course, a 2 mm thick metal sheet is ideal. The manufacturing process includes the following steps:

  • it is necessary to cut out a rectangular shape of the required dimensions from the sheet, while the edges of the workpiece should be filed so as not to injure themselves about them;
  • further, a thick-walled metal pipe should be welded to the sheet;
  • then you need to insert a wooden handle into this pipe, securing it with a screwdriver;
  • Finally, a DIY tool can be painted black, the end of the hoe can be sharpened and varnished.

A skilled owner will spend no more than 4–5 hours on all the work. But such a tool can be made for free. Only now a homemade hoe will serve you perfectly for one season, and then you need to think about purchasing a high-quality tool or all the necessary materials in order to make a hoe yourself again. Many professional gardeners can make a hoe in 20 minutes. They spend a minimum of money on all the necessary materials (metal sheets, pipes and cuttings) and in less than half an hour they get a ready-made tool. Such a hoe does its job just as well. It works well with dry and damp soil, removes weeds and gently oxygenates the roots without damaging them.

Important! If you nevertheless decide to make a hoe with your own hands from improvised materials, then you should not make it too heavy, because it will be difficult to work with such a tool. And also such a hoe will not loosen the ground with high quality, and even more so remove all the weeds from the roots.

A hoe should be kept in every shed, because such a simple but indispensable tool helps every gardener to grow a good harvest. The hoe does not take up much space on the site. It does not require any special storage. In addition, this tool is quite simple to operate, it is not heavy, so your back will not experience additional stress. Moreover, even beginners who have just decided to start gardening can cope with a hoe.
