Decor and crafts from wood cuts
Not only lovers of folk art are thinking about what can be made from wood cuts. This material has a beautiful texture, with proper processing it looks very aesthetically pleasing. DIY crafts, a wall of saw cuts in the interior, drawings and a wooden owl, watches and other products - the scope for creativity is huge, you just need to make a little effort, and also choose the right wood.
How to prepare the cuts?
Crafts and decor items made of treated wooden boards or bars no longer surprise anyone. The texture of a natural saw cut looks much more interesting and richer, on which beautiful annual rings appear. Decorative items are made from individual rounded elements that have undergone special processing. Finished crafts can be varnished or other coatings, painted with moisture resistant paints.
It all starts with the choice of material. The dies obtained by side sawing of the trunk or branches can have different diameters. Slabs of exotic trees, together with bark, are used to make countertops, small ones (up to 10 cm) are considered ornamental. You can take raw blanks or process them by drying at high temperatures. In this case, characteristic cracks will appear on the surface.
Particular attention is paid to the choice of wood species. For damp rooms, arranging decor in the garden, hardwoods are used: from inexpensive birch to luxurious oak. For interior decoration, the creation of children's crafts and toys, it is better to take soft wood: pine, spruce, larch.
Preparation begins with processing the material itself. You can cut a log, log or branch into even circles using a circular or hand saw. With a small diameter, the part is fixed in a vice, cut with a jigsaw. You should not use chain saws: they do not leave an even cut.
In general, the preparation of cuts includes six stages.
- Selection of wood. It involves finding a suitable rock, thickness. You can use logs of different thickness, growths, knots. This will make the material more interesting and original.
- Preparation... The bark is removed from the logs, the surface is polished. For sawing, they need to be securely fixed. A joinery vice or support legs can be used.
- Cut open... Sawing of workpieces is carried out transversely, so that in 1 pass the entire cut is made. If the diameter of the log is large, it is recommended to use a circular saw. The branches are easily separated with a regular hacksaw or jigsaw.
- Protection... Sawing in the cross direction makes the wood vulnerable to mold, mildew, and other factors. That is why, immediately after processing, the material is impregnated with special compounds, and then carefully polished.
- Texturing... Deep penetration impregnation helps to brighten the wood pattern. In addition to obtaining a more saturated texture, they can also paint the material in the desired colors and shades.
- Varnishing... The composition with protective and decorative functions allows you to save the saw cut from the appearance of rot, mold, fungus. You can also replace harsh chemicals with wax.
After decorative processing and sawing, the material is completely ready to create interesting decorative or applied products. It is optimal if the purpose of the thing is determined in advance. Then the quantity, color and other important characteristics can be calculated even during the procurement of raw materials.
What shapes can you make?
The most popular among curly products from wood cuts are crafts in the form of animals. Rounded elements can be combined in the form of an owl, hare, bear. Figures of a rooster and an ant look interesting.
Among the simplest options, an owl can be distinguished, for the manufacture of which you will need:
- base in the form of a perch;
- two saw cuts with a diameter of 20 and 14-15 cm;
- 4 parts for the eyes: 2 x 5 cm and 2 x 2 cm;
- 2 half rings for the wings.
The largest saw cut is attached to the base branch, followed by the second, imitating the tail. In the upper part, eyes are fixed on top of each other with glue or carnations. Then the wings are attached. Crafts of this type look best with bark, they do not need to be sanded. To give expressiveness to the figure, processing with a wood burner will help.
Smaller items are not difficult to make. For example, from thin branches you can make cuts suitable for figures of hares. The workpiece consists of 4 circles up to 5 cm in diameter, 2 parts up to 3 cm. Halves of saw cuts are used for legs and ears. The craft is formed very simply:
- a head is attached between two large elements;
- paws and ears are added;
- faces are painted.
With the help of saw cuts, you can experiment, creating figures of almost any size: from miniature to large. For fastening, glue or small nails are used.
Practical kitchen products
In the interior of the kitchen, crafts made of natural wood look appropriate and original. Coasters for hot dishes, interesting trays for food, plates for desserts or fruits, cutting boards are made from cuts. The simplest products do not require special processing... For example, a stand and a board can be made simply by choosing a saw cut that suits the size and shape, and then sanding it. You can decorate one of the sides, but this is completely optional.
The most interesting are the combined stands, reminiscent of a panel in miniature. They are assembled from many fragments (cuts of different diameters) on a plywood base. Circles of wood are glued to the surface, polished, then a product of the desired size and shape is cut out. This allows you to get square, round, oval and other curly coasters with a unique decor.
When choosing a material for kitchen utensils, it is important to pay attention to the type of wood... Conifers, when heated, emit essential oils that create a feeling of comfort. Hardwoods are harder, they can be used as a stand for heavy pans, pots, used in the manufacture of cutting boards.
DIY interior decor items
It is very interesting that crafts from saw cuts in the interior are combined with other needlework techniques. You can add to them decoupage or burning of patterns, drawing - miniature landscapes look especially impressive. Wooden products are easy to attach to the wall, from the cuts you get nice key holders, candlesticks, and other design elements that give the house a special comfort.
Frames of mirrors and photographs
With the help of small cuts, you can create an original decor for frames used for mounting mirrors, photographs. The workpieces should be 1-2 cm in diameter. To create a product, you will have to take a base - a sheet of thin plywood, lay the glass of the future frame or a mirror to be decorated on it, circle the outline.
The decorative part will be formed from the resulting rectangle, square, oval. For this, an indent of the desired width is taken, marked with a line. The entire base is cut out along it, a wall mount bar is attached to the back of the workpiece. The resulting frame is painted in the selected color with weather-resistant and moisture-resistant compounds.
On top of the base, you can begin to lay out the pattern by combining cuts of the same or different diameters. It is better to fasten the elements with quick-drying glue. Once the frame is ready, it can be varnished or left as it is. A mirror is glued inside the contour or a photograph with glass is inserted.
Panel on the wall
Decorating an accent wall is a fashion trend that allows you to add a special charm to the interior.... From wooden cuts, interesting panels are obtained that can effectively decorate a niche, cornice or headboard. For such a decor, you can choose wood of the same type and species, or choose combined options. The sizes of the cuts do not have to be the same either. On the contrary, circles of different diameters allow you to show great imagination when arranging them.
There is no need to achieve a clear pattern. You will have to create a frame frame if the panel is small. To decorate the entire wall, it is enough to make markings on its surface. After that, the prepared cuts can be fixed in random order with glue. They are attached to the base with self-tapping screws.
The finished panel is treated with linseed oil, varnished or tinted. The gaps between the cuts can be filled with clear resin or painted over. When using self-tapping screws, their presence is masked with wooden wedges driven over metal fasteners. The part above the surface is cut off, then carefully sanded.
Original watch
Making unusual decorative clocks from saw cuts is not at all difficult. A large and even cut of wood is used for the dial. The clock mechanism can be purchased or borrowed from an inexpensive electronic alarm clock. A drill is useful for making holes. Brushes, paints, and a burner will help you decorate your craft.
The procedure for making wall clocks is as follows:
- grind the saw cut, achieving a smooth surface;
- drill a hole in the center for fixing the clockwork;
- paint the board;
- burn out or draw numbers, markings;
- decorate the base (optional);
- install the clockwork.
The wall clock is easily attached by weight; it is enough to attach a metal loop on the back of the craft.

From them are obtained original steps, leading to the house, and if you replace the drawings on the walls with separate large cuts with an unusual ornament, you get a real work of modern art. In addition, the surface of the tree lends itself well to painting, it is easy to attach the backlight from the LED strip to it. Garden Ideas
For giving from wood cuts, you can create many original crafts, decorative elements or landscape design. Among interesting ideas are flowerpots, paving for paths... It is only important to remember that only healthy wood can be used in the summer cottage without signs of insect damage, rot.
Otherwise, not only the decorative elements themselves may suffer, but also the plants in contact with them.
Flowerpot
This landscape design option is well suited for areas where the natural design concept is preserved. A flowerpot-flower bed is made from a thick saw cut, the width of which should be at least 40-50 cm, the height is chosen arbitrarily, based on the characteristics of the grown flowers, the height of their stems. For creating a flower garden, trees with a soft core are well suited, since it will have to be pulled out with a chisel or cut out. The bark is worth saving.
The procedure for creating a flowerpot includes three stages.
- Markup... You need to retreat from the outer edge of the bark about 5 cm, then draw a circle that supports such an interval along the edge.
- Creation of a depression. It can be formed naturally by drilling several holes, and then filling it with ammonium nitrate. After a few weeks, a depression will form. You can also burn out, hollow out, cut the middle part, or combine several methods.
- Install the resulting flower bed frame on the site... Fill the fertile soil inside, plant the plants.
To protect against fungi, mold, insects, the material can be treated with a special impregnation.
Cuts tracks
Blanks made of natural wood may well replace classic paving stones or other coatings for paths in the country. With the right approach, such a path will serve for a long time, giving the landscape a special fabulous or ethnic style. Cuts are made from wood with the lowest porosity values. Ash, beech or oak, or other species with similar properties are suitable. The logs are dissolved into identical fragments of a similar size, 10-15 cm is enough.
The workpieces are impregnated with compounds that prevent the destruction of wood. After that, you can move on to a number of works.
- Markup... It is produced at the site of the future track, driving in pegs, and then stretching a rope between them.
- Excavation... You will need to dig a shallow trench, lay a film or geotextile inside, and pour crushed stone. The resulting base is compacted, leveled. Wooden or brick curbs can be laid along the sides.
- The finished trench is covered with sand, spilled with water... The cuts are tightly placed on the base. They can be tamped down with a mallet or small hammer.
The remaining voids are filled with sand or soil removed during excavation.
