Making arches for roses with your own hands
Rose is the queen of the garden. This is a very beautiful flower that can act as a bright and effective decoration of the local area. If you want to complement the site in an original way, you can resort to making an elegant arch on which roses will be fixed. In this article, we will learn how you can build such a product.
Projects
A properly made rose arch, the design of which was well thought out by a home craftsman, is able to take on the role of a bright accent in decorating the site. There are many options for the execution of the structures under consideration. They can have both simple and intricate structures with many graceful lines.
Before you independently make an arch for climbing or climbing flowers in the garden, you need to draw up a detailed plan for future homemade products. The master will need to prepare all the necessary diagrams and drawings, which will indicate all the dimensions and design features.
The arch plan can be drawn up independently, or you can use ready-made options.
Let's take a look at some of them.
- The arch will be simple to perform, in which the rounded top is not made of wood or metal, but of a special mesh. A climbing rose can be placed around it. The structure will turn out to be very beautiful.
- The forged structure, executed in the form of a continuous arch with round / oval decorations along the entire length, will be elegant, but more difficult to manufacture. Such a structure will look more presentable and expensive on the site.
- A good solution for a summer residence would be standard arch made of shaped pipes, between which a mesh material is stretched along the entire length (expanded mesh).
When independently developing a project for a future homemade arch for a garden / summer cottage, it is important to pre-allocate a suitable place for it. Thanks to this, it will be easier for the master to determine the optimal size of the homemade product.
Wood arch manufacturing technology
Wood - one of the most popular materials, which is most often used in the manufacture of beautiful arches for any roses. Working with wood is not as difficult as working with the same metal. However, this environmentally friendly material will subsequently need to be periodically treated with special protective compounds. Without these care measures, the tree will quickly lose its former attractiveness and begin to collapse.
If the design of a wooden arch is planned, then the master will need to use only sufficiently dried boards. It is recommended to fasten different fragments of the structure by means of galvanized fasteners.
So, for self-assembly of a wooden arch for luxurious flowers you will need:
- 4 wooden blocks 10x10 cm (for making walls and supporting bases);
- 2 boards for the construction of the roof of the arch;
- 4 slats of 4 m for the manufacture of crossbeams in the space between the hay supporting parts of the structure.
Having all the necessary material, the master must adhere to this scheme of actions.
- First, a template is made for the upper component of the rose arch.
- Then the upper arched component is marked on the wood.
- Two parts are cut with an electric jigsaw.
- Then the bars are fixed in the upper arched base.
- Next, wooden slats are fixed in the side and upper sections, forming lattices.
The resulting structure should be mounted in accordance with the needs of the culture in question, which will rely on it. It is advisable to choose an area with a flat surface. There should be no groundwater next to it, strong winds should not blow here either - this can harm the arched structure with flowers.
Wooden arches attract craftsmen not only by the simplicity of their manufacture, but also by the fact that they easily fit into almost any landscape composition. A well-made design will harmoniously complement a variety of environments.
In addition, such a structure will remain warm (as opposed to a metal one), which will have a beneficial effect on the state of luxurious roses.
How to make it out of metal?
Very strong, wear-resistant and durable arches are obtained from such a practical material as metal. Similar structures are found in many areas. A well-made metal arch can transform the landscape design, making it more expensive and elegant.
If you want to build a reliable metal structure, you need to remember that this is a cold material. In cool weather, such a structure may become less comfortable for finding roses on it. It should also be borne in mind that it will be possible to make a metal arch on your own only if the master can skillfully weld it and knows how to work with a welding machine. If a person is not familiar with such a technique, then it is advisable to contact specialists or buy a ready-made version.
To make an arch from metal, the master will need:
- pipe bender;
- hacksaw for cutting metal;
- pliers;
- nippers;
- wire;
- welding machine;
- building level;
- roulette;
- fittings.
If everything you need is in the master's arsenal, then it is possible to start making a strong metal arch.
- It is advisable to make bearing arcs from reinforcement having a cross section of 10 mm.
- Transverse structural parts should be created from reinforcement having a cross section of 6 mm.
- 2 support arcs can be made with almost any length parameter.
- You will need to add additional rigidity and stability to the support arcs. For this, it is advisable to install transverse components of the structure.
- The crossbars can be either straight or cruciform, curved or ring-shaped.
- The traditional spacing between crossbars is usually 20 to 30 cm.
The finished arched structure for roses will need to be buried in the ground on the site by at least 50 mm. Thanks to this, the soil will not squeeze out the metal support with flowers under the "onslaught" of temperature jumps. The resulting metal arch will also require some care from the owners. It will need to be treated with anti-corrosion compounds.
Often, such homemade products are painted and subsequently tinted so that they do not lose their attractive appearance.
Homemade arch from plastic pipes
Some owners prefer to decorate their garden plots with designs made from more modern materials. It can be plastic, from which beautiful arched structures-supports for roses are also obtained. Plastic pipes are pliable and cute, but not the most environmentally friendly material, especially when compared to wood. But plastic structures are cheap, and at first glance they are often confused with metal options. To make an arch from plastic pipes with your own hands, the master will need the following things:
- 2 pipes - the longitudinal beams of the structure will be made of them, the length of the pipes must correspond to their width parameter, that is, not less than 120 mm;
- pipes are suitable both from polyvinyl chloride and from propylene or polyethylene;
- you will also need short sections of pipes that will be used as supports and cross beams;
- adapters of suitable diameter will be used to connect the pipes.
Now let's look at the detailed work order.
- First, long pipes will need to be cut into several shorter ones so that the cross beams of the structure can be connected without problems. Due to this, the structure will be quite stable.
- Then the pipes are firmly connected to each other. You can use a high-quality adhesive to hold the parts together, but heating plastic pipes is also suitable.
- Since such an arched structure will have a very light weight, the master will need to be especially careful about preparing the foundation and making the supporting elements. If everything is done correctly, then even very strong wind gusts will not be able to break or turn over the plastic arch.
- To make the structure more durable and wear-resistant, reinforcing pins are attached to the plastic support beams. In this case, it is best to use high-quality polyurethane foam. After that, all fastened parts must be given time to dry completely.
- These pins will need to be well deepened into the ground by about 50-100 cm.
- The earth that surrounds these elements must be filled up, and then properly tamped.
Helpful hints and tips
If you decide to make a beautiful and high-quality support base for roses on your own, it is worth taking on board some useful tips and tricks.
- On the finished support, the stems of the roses must be distributed evenly and neatly. In the course of regrowth of lateral shoots, the branches are attached to the trellis already in a horizontal position. Due to such a simple technique, it is possible to increase the number of flowering sprouts.
- For the winter, the climbing rose will need to be removed from any support. Only in early spring can the shoots be freed from the shelter and fixed on the supporting foundations of the structure.
- If the structure is made of wood, at the end of all work it will definitely need to be covered with high-quality varnish or paint. The latter should have a color that blends harmoniously with the surrounding environment.
- To prepare an arched base for roses, you will need to select the right materials. There should be no damage or corrosion on the metal. It is worth taking a closer look at the tree. It must not show any signs of decay or mold. Low-quality materials will not make a good arch.
- Find the perfect place to install your arch. For these purposes, a zone near the entrance to a garden or a plot in the immediate vicinity of residential buildings is suitable.
- For the construction of a timber structure, it is recommended to use more practical and wear-resistant species. Such structures will be durable and will not quickly collapse, especially when combined with competent and regular maintenance.
- To make the arch, use only high-quality and properly working tools. Proceed in stages, without too much haste, so as not to break / deform the support parts.
