Everything you need to know about grape arches
Many gardeners grow various grape varieties in their summer cottages. Nowadays, the vine is often used as an interesting decorative decoration. Whole arches entwined with such branches in the yard will look beautiful. Today we will talk about the main features of such garden structures and what materials they can be made of.
Description and purpose
These arches represent the most durable decorative structures of considerable height and small thickness.
Such structures are used mainly for vigorous grapes, which do not need to be covered in the winter season.
Varieties
Such products can be of two main types.
- Arched specimens. These structures will be an excellent option for large summer cottages. In this case, fruit bushes should be planted in two rows at once. Large structures will occupy a significant area, often they are made in the form of an arch-tunnel.
- Semi-arched canopy. Such options can be located in small garden areas. They are often combined with recreation areas. These awnings additionally provide good sun protection. In this case, the bushes of grapes should be planted only in one row.
Arches for grapevine not only act as a beautiful decorative addition to the site, but also enable the grapes to grow correctly, not to grow in all directions and not to creep along the ground.
Materials (edit)
Sheds for growing fruit bushes can be made in different ways. They differ depending on the type of materials from which they are made. Let's highlight the most popular varieties.
Plastic
These species are relatively light in weight. They are easy to assemble and install by hand. Most often, they are created using special PVC pipes (the best option would be models with a diameter of 20 millimeters; all samples must be of the same diameter) or simply from unnecessary plastic residues.
Also, constructions created from plastic bottles will look original on the site. But they should only be used as a decorative item, as they will not be able to withstand excessive weight loads. They allow you to create shading.
Arches made of such material will not corrode and rot during operation. They are also the most cost effective option. During the construction of a structure, plastic parts can be fastened together using special durable glue.
During installation, plastic bases for the manufacture of arches must be immersed in the ground to a depth of at least 45-50 centimeters. Thus, they will be securely fastened, the structure will not fall and will not be distorted.
An arch made of PVC pipes will look pretty nice and neat, it can complement the overall landscape design. If you wish, you can take a plastic base of any color.
Sometimes arches are made of durable polypropylene pipes. This material is created from special thermoplastic polymers. It has good hardness and density. Polypropylene is able to withstand sudden changes in temperature, high levels of humidity, and has excellent impact resistance. This material is often painted in various bright colors using pigments.
Made of wood
Such arches look the most aesthetically pleasing on the site. With the help of special tools, you can cut structures with patterns and various images from a wooden base to make the design even more beautiful and original.
Wooden awnings are most often made in the form of a trellis made of beams. In order for the structure to serve as long as possible, you need to select material made from the most durable and reliable types of wood. In addition, it must be pre-treated with special protective equipment and antiseptics. This procedure allows you to extend the life of the product, prevents the appearance of damage and rot on the surface.
The lower part of the timber structure needs special processing, because it will be placed directly in the ground. For best protection, you can use stretch wrap.
Made of metal
Metal options are the most reliable, durable, strong and durable. Besides, forged models can also boast of special aesthetics, they will become an interesting and beautiful accent of decoration.
Metal structures must undergo particularly careful processing. Preliminarily, substances that prevent the formation of corrosion are applied to their surface.
But it should be remembered that independent production of such a canopy will require a lot of time and effort. To fasten the hotel parts of the arch together, you will have to use a welding machine. If it is not there, then special mounting bolts are taken, which are inserted into the pre-drilled seats.
Also, one should not forget about the high cost of such materials.
Products made from metals are distinguished by a significant mass, which is why it is not recommended to additionally weight them with other elements. They will be able to firmly and firmly hold on to the ground.
Metal models withstand sudden temperature changes, strong gusts of wind, various mechanical damage. With proper processing, they will not require special care during operation.
How to do it yourself?
Almost any gardener will be able to make a suitable vine arch-canopy for his summer cottage. To begin with, it is worth drawing up a drawing of the future design. It is better to indicate all dimensions on it at once, so that during the manufacturing process there are no difficulties with this.
After that, you need to select the material from which the structure will be created. Consider a metal option. In this case, you will need to prepare metal pipes, rods, as well as special wire parts.
Next, it is necessary to treat all materials with anti-corrosion compounds, as well as moisture-resistant impregnations. Then you should prepare small grooves. To do this, two pits are dug on the site with a depth of at least 60 and 80 centimeters.
Sand is poured on their bottom, the layer thickness should not be less than 20 centimeters. Later, you need to prepare holes for installing metal posts. The distance between them should be approximately 40-45 cm.
The supporting posts are fixed in the made seats. After that, they are a little covered with gravel or crushed stone.
Sometimes all this is poured with cement mortar, in which case the structure will be fixed as tightly and reliably as possible.
Next, you need to wait for the cement composition to completely dry and harden. At the same time, you can start making the upper part of the structure. It can be built from metal shaped pipes or from fittings. A few days later, when the cement becomes dry and hard, a horizontal beam is fixed to each of the supports. It is best to weld the parts together using a welding machine.
Then you need to fix the upper curved part of the future arch. You should also immediately fix the wire threads - they will be needed so that the grapes can cling tightly.
Growing grapes on an arch
If you plan to grow fruit bushes on such structures, you should be sure to keep in mind some special rules for growing and caring for plants.
- Do not forget that it is necessary to prune the vine, this procedure allows you to get rid of old and diseased branches, contributes to the proper formation of the plant. You need to prune the culture every year.
- Also grapes need to be tied up periodically. This applies to young shoots and stepchildren. With this procedure, the branches will grow in the right direction.
- Regularly treat shrubs with protective agents that prevent harmful insects and other parasites from attacking.
- Do not forget to form the number of bunches on this fruit plant yourself. This will significantly reduce the weight load on the vine.
If you take proper care of the grapes, it will not only be able to bring a large harvest, but will also look beautiful on the outside. Well-groomed shrubs will become as dense as possible, but neat at the same time.
On the considered arches, it is worth growing only certain grape varieties. You should choose winter-hardy varieties that are not afraid of temperature extremes and do not require shelter during cold periods.
Sometimes wild grapes are grown on such structures. In this case, beautiful decorative compositions are obtained, they are often installed near gazebos or other recreation areas.
Maiden grapes will look aesthetically and interestingly on such structures. Such dense shrubs are perennial and large vines that can decorate almost any landscape.
The maiden grapes are attached to the support with tendrils. It has beautiful large leaf blades painted in bright green-burgundy colors. This plant blooms for two weeks in the early summer. Small green flowers gather in lush inflorescences, dark blue fruits appear only towards the end of summer. This type looks good on wooden and forged structures.
