How to replace roofing material?
The active development of the construction industry became possible when modern, new materials, tools and equipment appeared on the market. Building materials are found in great abundance today. But, even in spite of this, many continue to use the old and time-tested ones.
One of the most important and difficult stages, both in construction and in the course of repair work, is the installation of roofing. The range of materials that can be used for roofing is large and varied. Nevertheless, very often builders give preference to roofing material. Its installation is very laborious and requires certain skills and knowledge. The answer to the question of whether roofing material can be replaced with something can be found in this article.
Can you replace it with euroruberoid?
Roofing material is a roofing roll material that has been actively used for installation and installation of a soft roof for several decades. Of course, roofing material has a number of advantages: it is moisture-proof, flexible, lightweight, easy to install, but it also has disadvantages. The most significant disadvantage of the material is its short service life, which leads to the need for its frequent replacement. It is also worth noting that roofing material can be mounted only at positive temperatures. That is why today they are trying to replace it with other, more reliable materials.
One of these is euroruberoid. It is a modern, improved material that is used as a roof covering. It shares a lot with its predecessor.
Euroruberoid consists of:
- fiberglass or polyester - the base;
- bituminous mastic, which contains plasticizers - this component acts as an impregnation, and the presence of plasticizers contributes to the preservation of the original qualities and technical parameters of the material throughout the entire service life;
- mineral powder, which can be used as sand, shale or mineral chips;
- adhesive films.
Euroruberoid has a number of advantages and features that make the material so popular today. Among all the advantages of roll coating, it is worth noting:
- high plasticity;
- long service life;
- corrosion resistance;
- resistance to decay;
- resistance to various atmospheric influences (temperature drops, heating, ultraviolet light, various precipitation - all this does not in any way affect the properties of euroruberoid).
Considering all of the above information, it is not at all surprising that euroruberoid is widely used in modern construction.
New generation roofing roll material is used:
- for covering a wooden roof;
- for waterproofing concrete foundations;
- as a gasket between a concrete foundation wall and a stone / aerated block / wooden wall;
- as a protective layer for a pool or any other artificial, decorative or economic reservoir;
- as waterproofing for the foundation;
- in the process of arranging garden paths and sidewalks.
Euroruberoid is easy to install, which is why it is often used in everyday life to cover the roof of various outbuildings, for example, it can be used for a barn, summer shower, garage.
Its varieties differ in the type of impregnation, which can be of 2 types.
- Bituminous rubber SBS. SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) refers to organic polymers. This component helps to improve the waterproofing properties. Euroruberoid impregnated with SBS can withstand unrealistically low temperatures, up to - 400 ° С. This property makes the material ideal for roofing in regions with very cold climates.
- Bituminous-plastic APP. APP is atactic polypropylene, which is characterized by high rigidity and resistance to very high temperatures. The material does not deform and does not lose its original properties even at an air temperature of 1500 ° C. That is why it is logical to use it for roofing in very hot regions.
Stekloizol as an analogue of roofing material
Another material that can be used instead of roofing material is glass insulation. It belongs to the soft roofing roll materials, the main components of which are:
- fiberglass;
- fiberglass;
- polyester.
Currently, glass insulation can be used both as a roofing material and as a lining material.
As a roofing material, it is better to choose glass insulation, the outer side of which has a protective layer consisting of fine-grained or coarse-grained powder and polyethylene.
Fiberglass, intended for lining, is characterized by the presence of a polyethylene film on each side. Today it is very often used in construction as a roofing material. This demand is due to a number of advantages and features that are inherent in it.
So, stekloizol is characterized by:
- biostability;
- waterproof;
- strength;
- flexibility;
- elasticity;
- low thermal conductivity;
- excellent sound absorption.
It can be used to:
- cover the roof of a garage, summer cottage, house or any other, both residential and temporary, buildings;
- for waterproofing the blind area.
Recently, stekloizol is increasingly used for waterproofing a pitched roof instead of the usual waterproofing materials.
As for the service life, on average it is from 20 to 30 years. The reason why on average and why there is such an interval of 10 years is that there are a number of factors that affect the shelf life of the material, namely:
- the quality of all work - from preparatory to the final stage;
- compliance with all technological processes;
- the quality of the material and its correct choice.
It is also important that the installation, whatever material you choose, is carried out exclusively by professionals, roofers with extensive experience and knowledge of their business. But in order to buy quality material, you need to be able to choose a manufacturer.
It is best to give preference to well-known brands, companies whose products have proven themselves well.
When choosing a roofing material, pay attention to:
- physical and technical parameters;
- shelf life;
- availability of quality certificates for products;
- price.
Good material, like any other product, cannot be cheap. If you are offered to buy it at a discounted price, it is worth considering. Most likely, something is wrong with it, perhaps there are no certificates of conformity, which may indicate that technical requirements were violated during the production process or the expiration date is about to expire.
Alternative modern materials
In addition to euroruberoid and glass insulation, there are many other materials that can be used to replace roofing material in the process of arranging roofing.
Bikrost
Its basis is fiberglass and bitumen. Bikrost consists of several layers, each of which is characterized by the presence of a protective film and powder, which enhance the resistance of the material to ultraviolet radiation and other weather influences. Bikrost is roofing and vapor barrier.
One of the most significant drawbacks is its service life, which does not exceed 10 years.
Rubemast
The basis of rubemast is roofing board impregnated with bitumen mastic, additives and plasticizers. The main feature is resistance to deformation and cracking on the surface. The service life, provided that the installation is performed correctly, is about 15 years.
Soft tiles
The product belongs to roll roofing materials. Soft tiles consist of at least 3 layers, each of which is different. The main element is fiberglass, which is impregnated with bitumen. Basalt crumb is used as a powder. A layer of fiberglass is followed by a bitumen-polymer layer, and then a silicone layer.
Installation of soft tiles is quite simple. In addition to many advantages and features, it differs from roofing material in a wide range of colors. The service life of this roof covering is 30 years.
Geotextile
This is a very high quality and reliable product. Its main components are polyester and polypropylene fibers. Geotextiles are polyester, polypropylene and blended.
- Polypropylene geotextile is durable, resistant to various chemicals, wear-resistant.
- Polyester is also strong, but loses its qualities and properties under the influence of acids and alkalis.
- Mixed is made from waste. It does not have high physical and technical properties, has a short shelf life. That is why it is the most affordable.
Geotextile has the following advantages and features:
- resistance to mechanical and thermal stress;
- waterproofness;
- UV resistance;
- mold, fungus and other microorganisms do not appear on it.
The service life of polypropylene geotextiles breaks all records and ranges from 80 to 100 years.
If we compare it with roofing felt, which is suitable for a maximum of 20 years, geotextiles, of course, have a big advantage.
Linoleum
Linoleum can also be used as an analogue of roofing material. The presence of a vapor barrier film makes it possible to use linoleum as a lining carpet for waterproofing the foundation. It cannot be placed on the roof as a roofing material.
Someone can use a banner, corrugated board or cellophane instead of roofing material. Of course, this is a personal matter for everyone. But these materials are far from roofing material in technical parameters and properties. Each material has its own place and purpose. And if you want the roof of your home to be reliable and not leak, use only materials intended for overlap.
