Makita planers overview
Locksmith and carpentry tools are one of the most important components of success for any home craftsman. After reading the review of Makita planers, people will be able to better understand what kind of device they need in practice. However, general recommendations for the selection of tools play an equally important role.
Peculiarities
To assess the Makita planers is most likely based on the reviews that consumers leave. The overwhelming majority of buyers appreciate both the price / quality ratio and the practical characteristics themselves. But it is worth noting that sometimes there are problems with starting, it simply is not smooth enough. But Makita devices usually do not create problems with a sample of a quarter. In general, this equipment is characterized as an excellent tool, but only suitable for a narrow range of special tasks (depending on the model).
Other comments note:
- high quality of the traversed surface;
- high productivity;
- the need for additional configuration;
- periodic problems with working in the cold;
- endurance;
- rapid clogging of the pipe through which the chips are ejected;
- wide range of cutting depths.
The lineup
Network
A good example of a Makita electric planer is the 1902. The manufacturer promises the most ergonomic design, which should reduce the load during operation. Users can use both standard and double-sided blades. Installing them in place will be easy and quick thanks to a specially thought-out system. The main parameters are as follows:
- power during continuous operation 0.55 kW;
- idle with a frequency of 16,000 rpm;
- the ability to remove shavings from 0 to 1 mm;
- own weight 2.5 kg;
- knives 82 mm wide;
- rebate with a depth of 0 to 9 mm.
Model 1911B is considered a good alternative. The width of the processed strip is 110 mm. The wood processing depth can be up to 2 mm. The total mass is 4.2 kg. Despite the relative lightness, the designers were able to use a relatively powerful (0.85 kW) electric motor. Here are some more technical parameters:
- idling up to 16,000 rpm;
- knives 110 mm wide;
- length 355 mm;
- weight according to the EPTA 2003 standard - 4.3 kg (when weighed according to a special procedure).
The 1923H uses a slightly lower motor (0.85 kW). The product is positioned as an excellent assistant for folding. Its attractive properties are relative lightness (3.5 kg) and perfect balance. The planer knives are up to 82 mm wide. The folding depth can be 23 mm.
The 1002BA is sometimes considered a good option for folding. This planer is equipped with a powerful (1.05 kW) motor. As with the previous model, the lightness and balance of the design are harmoniously combined. The sole is designed in such a way that even concave surfaces can be successfully processed. Standard carbide knives can be used. Main technical properties:
- idle up to 15,000 rpm;
- knives 110 mm wide;
- the ability to remove chips up to 4 mm;
- weight 5.2 kg.
If you need to choose an especially powerful plane, it is useful pay attention to the product Makita 1806B. This device offers improved performance. It is provided by a motor that develops an effort of up to 1.2 kW. Overall length is 525 mm.
In one pass, you can plan a strip up to 170 mm wide, and the weight of the device is 9 kg.
Relatively powerful (0.62 kW) KP0800 planer. The product is recommended for folding work. Chamfering is facilitated by a V-shaped notch.The body is made as attractive as possible (within the framework of the updated design concept), and special rubber inserts in the handle reduce vibration. Chips up to 2.5 mm thick can be removed and the weight of the planer is only 2.6 kg.
The KP0810 / KP0810C plane also deserves attention. Like other models of the same brand, the product combines comparative lightness and balance. Rubber inserts are provided, due to which less vibration is transmitted through the handle. There are also 3 V grooves to ensure different chamfer sizes. Other important points:
- electronic control of the number of revolutions;
- the ability to direct the discharge of sawdust to the right or left;
- power during continuous operation up to 850/1050 W;
- knives 82 mm wide;
- the ability to remove chips with a thickness of 0 to 4 mm;
- folding with a depth of 0-25 mm.
Model KP312S got its name because the passage width is 312 mm. Engineers have achieved smooth start-up and optimum overload protection. In order to facilitate the sliding of the planer on the wood to the limit, a special front roller is used. It is also worth noting that the designers managed to improve the efficiency of ejection of chips outside. The center of gravity of the instrument is low.
There are a few more nuances:
- maximum cleanliness of the treated surface;
- idle speed 12000 rpm;
- the thickness of the removed shavings on the strip up to 150 mm is equal to 3.5 mm;
- the thickness of the removed shavings on the strip from 151 to 240 mm is equal to 2 mm;
- the thickness of the removed shavings on the strip from 241 to 312 mm is equal to 1.5 mm;
- the total weight of the product is 18.4 kg.
Rechargeable
An attractive (and, alas, the only) example of the Makita cordless planer is the BKP180RFE. The device is equipped with a lithium-ion battery. The engine is supplemented with a special brake. Installation of blades is simplified and accelerated thanks to a special add-on. Chamfering makes the V groove easier. Of course, standard blades can be used. But the design allows the use of double-sided mini-format blades from such planers. The shaft housing of the electric motor is made of a special aluminum alloy. The kit includes a plastic case and a pair of replacement batteries. The weight of the plane is 3.4 kg.
How to choose?
It's obvious that the more powerful the plane, the higher its productivity. However, increasing the motor power also increases the weight of the product. When it is expected that you will have to work only from time to time, you can limit yourself to a model with a 0.5-0.7 kW engine. And here for the professional sphere and just for those who like to make something from wood, you need to focus on planers with a power of 1.2-1.5 kW and above.
But productivity also depends on the size of the device that removes the chips. You cannot strip the strip more than the drum and blades allow. However, a wide base is not entirely justified if you only need to work with small boards.
Beams, uprights and even chairs can be machined with 82 mm soles. But a table, a wardrobe or even a door will have to be created using a planer with a sole from 110 to 170 mm.
Repairing Makita electric planers and purchasing spare parts are not a problem in any region. So this moment is not too important when choosing. The next important parameter is the engine idling frequency. For periodic use, 13 thousand revolutions are enough. More or less serious work is possible with planers developing from 15 to 19 thousand revolutions.
The drive belt can be made of injection molded polyurethane or extra strong synthetic rubber. For reinforcement, ideally synthetic cords should be used. However, with these points, Makita equipment is usually all right.
The mass of the tool must also be taken into account. After all, the convenience of everyday work depends on it.
