Causes of the appearance of rust on roses and its treatment
Literally every gardener has encountered such a fungal disease as rust. It is this disease in the summer that causes the appearance of red and brown spots on the leaves and other parts of the rose, and also destroys the flower. In this article, we will consider all its symptoms, the causes of its appearance, and also talk about what methods can be used to deal with it.
What is dangerous and what does it look like?
Rust is a common disease in garden plants caused by fungi. It is considered one of the most dangerous and can kill flowers in a short time. It is not difficult even for an inexperienced gardener to identify this disease. Its distinctive feature is spotting: roses that are sick are covered with reddish or yellowish specks of small sizes. As a rule, this happens at the end of May or in June. In appearance, such specks resemble sprinkles. They cover the leaves, shoots, and inflorescences of the diseased plant.
More obvious symptoms of the disease can be seen after a couple of weeks: during this period, the mycelium of the fungus begins to grow through the leaf blade, which is why red spots can be seen from the upper side. On the reverse side, you can see spore-bearing pads, distinguished by their convexity. By autumn, the spots change their color to brownish. The same parts of the plant that were not affected by the fungus become light and faded, which indicates that the process of photosynthesis of the plant has been disrupted at the cellular level.
Over time, the diseased rose grows new leaves, but they look deformed, like the stem of the plant. The buds and flowers of the rose begin to fade without opening, which occurs due to the cessation of the circulation of the nutritious juice. The rose begins to actively shed the foliage, and the affected areas of the plant crack, because of which it subsequently dies.
Rust spreads through the garden rather quickly, and it is very difficult to treat it. Therefore, it is recommended to fight this disease at the first stages of its development.
Why does it appear?
Rust on roses can appear for a variety of reasons.
- One of the main ways to infect a plant is through the air. Wind currents carry fungal spores from diseased plants to healthy ones. Moreover, the disease can be transferred from someone else's garden.
- Another reason for the appearance of rust on roses is this is the abundance of harmful insects in the garden, which not only feed on plant juices, which cause great harm to it, but also are carriers of dangerous diseases.
- In addition, the occurrence of fungus is facilitated by conditions that are suitable for its activation and further distribution in the garden. Such diseases include high humidity of the air masses, an abundance of rain in the summer, as well as a noticeable deficiency of nitrogenous elements in the soil where flowers grow.
How to treat?
For treatment, gardeners use different drugs and often make their own formulations.
Folk remedies
Many gardeners do not like to use chemistry in their summer cottage, preferring organic preparations and solutions prepared according to folk recipes, because they are absolutely harmless to the environment and humans, and also, as a rule, are easy to prepare, cannot cause allergies and differ in their cheapness.
However, this method of struggle cannot be called the most effective. It will be almost impossible to get rid of rust with its help, because the disease penetrates into the roses themselves, which makes the process of getting rid of the disease more problematic... However, folk remedies can be used to prevent rust. They will help not only save plants from the occurrence of this disease, but also strengthen its immunity.
So, rust can be fought with nettle-based solution. You will need a whole bucket of this component, into which you need to pour clean and warm water. All this must be set aside in a warm place, well sanctified by the sun, and given time for a full infusion - this usually takes about fifteen days.
Do not forget to stir the solution periodically, while monitoring the fermentation process. When the solution is completely ready, you will not be able to see bubbles on its surface - this is what will indicate that the mixture is ready for use. If you plan to use a mixture for root watering, then in this case, each liter of the strained solution will need to be diluted with 9 liters of water. And to spray the plant, the mixture must be diluted with 12 liters of water.
Suitable for treatment and wormwood solution... This will require a barrel, which will need to be filled with wormwood and filled with warm water. Next, the barrel should be left in the sun to infuse for 2 weeks. After this time, the mixture should be filtered, after which it will become ready for use. Remember to mix this product with 9 liters of water before spraying the plant.
You can also process the plant with another solution made based on tea and vodka... It is not difficult to make such a mixture. This will require a liter of water, two teaspoons of strong tea and three teaspoons of vodka. All this needs to be mixed well, after which the plants can be treated with the resulting mixture.
Fungicides
The best remedy that allows you to cure a rose bush from rust is fungicidal preparations.... They differ in their efficiency and quick responseare capable of acting both locally and systemically. The first type of drugs, as a rule, affects only the outer part of the culture. And those that differ in systemic action treat the plant from the inside, and therefore, when fighting rust, we recommend giving preference to them. You can buy such fungicidal agents in a special store for summer residents. However, we do not recommend buying all fungicides, but only those that have already established themselves as potent. These drugs include:
- Falcon;
- "Strobe";
- Bordeaux liquid;
- "Topaz".
However, we note that all of the listed drugs must be used according to the instructions, while strictly observing all the indicated proportions. The instruction, as a rule, is located on the packaging of each of the drugs.
Prophylaxis
Compliance with preventive measures will help not only prevent the occurrence of rust on the roses, but also quickly take specific measures if this disease does appear in your garden.
- So, the first thing to do is regularly inspect flower bushes for the presence of a disease. Seeing the first symptoms of the disease, be sure to destroy the affected areas by cutting and burning them further... It is not worth pitying the plant when pruning, because otherwise the fungus cannot be destroyed. Having eliminated the diseased areas, do not forget to treat the plant with special preparations.
- Do not forget about feeding, after all, the lack of certain elements in the soil can cause the appearance of a fungus. In addition, fertilizers help to strengthen the immunity of the crop, which makes it more resistant to all sorts of diseases.
- Provide the plant with favorable conditions for growth and development... When watering, do not allow excess moisture, however, its deficiency will also be harmful to the plant.
- Disinfect garden supplies without fail, because with their help it is also possible to spread the fungus from diseased plants to healthy ones.
- Do not forget to destroy the remaining foliage, since harmful insects and fungal spores can hibernate under them.
- Preventive treatments should not be deprived of attention, which also help to strengthen the immunity of the plant and prevent the onset and further spread of the disease.
- Destroy parasitic insects because they cause great harm to the plant, and also often infect it with a fungus. Particular attention should be paid to the fight against parasites such as aphids, Putin ticks, leafworms and slugs.
By the way, you can fight them with the help of folk remedies, which were given above. However, if there are a lot of insects, then in this case we recommend resorting to the use of chemicals.
