Description of the variety
As the name implies, the variety was named after the great 17th century Spanish artist Diego Velazquez. And this artistic component is immediately visible in the colors. So, a dense, rather large goblet-shaped dark crimson bud, when opened, gradually turns into a stunning bowl-shaped flower, with beautiful slightly wavy or corrugated petals.
A huge flower with a high center is up to 13 centimeters in diameter, it is densely double, the number of petals, painted in a complex shade, reaches about 30 to 45 pieces. In addition to such beauty, everyone can enjoy an excellent scent: the flowers exude an intense aroma of rose oil.
The bush of the rose culture of the Velasquez variety is quite compact, but dense. The plant reaches a height of 100-150 centimeters, the girth is up to 70 centimeters. The bright colors are contrasted with the dark green foliage of medium size, which has a glossy surface.
Advantages and disadvantages
Like many other roses, Velasquez has many pros and cons. The advantages of a rose bush, in addition to its beauty and charming aroma, include its resistance to diseases. And also the variety is quite frost-resistant. The culture belongs to the 6th zone of frost resistance (USDA), flowers can survive a drop in temperature from -18 to -23 without consequences.
Among the disadvantages of the variety, one can note the average resistance of flowers to rain. Therefore, it is recommended to cover the bushes when it rains heavily. The plant also shows moderate resistance to powdery mildew and black spot.
Flowering features
Velazquez is a continuous flowering rose. Abundant flowering throughout the summer period, lasts from June to September.
Use in landscape design
Originally, the Velasquez variety was cut. But soon the rose was also used by landscape designers to decorate mixborders and hedges. And also this large bright rose is good as a tapeworm.
